Burl Ives - Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly Lyrics

Lavender blue, dilly, dilly
Lavender green
If I were king, dilly, dilly
I'd need a queen

Who told me so? Dilly, dilly
Who told me so?
I told myself, dilly, dilly
I told me so

If your dilly, dilly heart
Feels a dilly, dilly way
And if you'll answer, "Yes"
In a pretty little church
On a dilly, dilly day
You'll be wed in a dilly, dilly dress of

Lavender blue, dilly, dilly
Lavender green
Then I'll be king, dilly, dilly
And you'll be my queen

Lavender blue, dilly, dilly
Lavender green
If you were king, dilly, dilly
You'd need a queen

Who told me so? Dilly, dilly
Who told me so?
I told myself, dilly, dilly
I told me so

If your dilly, dilly heart
Feels a dilly, dilly way
And if you'll answer, "Yes"
In a pretty little church
On a dilly, dilly day
I'll be wed in a dilly, dilly dress of

Lavender blue, dilly, dilly
Lavender green
Then you'll be king, dilly, dilly
And I'll be your queen

  4. G Cook

His lovely soothing voice takes you back to a time when things were gentle and people weren't so greedy and selfish and they showed compassion for their fellow human beings, sad to say those days are gone for ever.

  5. playtolive Cromley

This song was theme to my childhood. I was connected to the world only bcuz of Burl!!!

I saw the movie, So Dear to My Heart, when I was 7 in 1948.  It was a live-action and animated Disney film with the wonderful child actor, Bobby Driscoll,  It also starred Burl Ives (yeas before he played Big Daddy with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor in Cat  on a Hot Tin Roof.  This song was nominated for best song.  It lost to Baby, It's cold outside.

I just woke up from a nap a while ago, and this song was playing in my head. I have no idea why, but I've always loved this song's melody and it's silly silly words. I was just researching this song and discovered that their are several versions.

  22. Steven Gordon

I love Burl Ives and was introduced to his songs as a child in the 60s. I had a great collection on albums/45s, then on cassettes, and now it is hard to find many of his oldest, wonderful recordings. Many were hill music and folk songs. Each time the format changes more and more are left behind. It is a shame.

Lynda Swink I used to listen to him when I was a child, now I’m 24. He reaches all generations :) this song makes me very relaxed because my mother would play a cassette tape of this song along with others to help me fall asleep.

    Lovely Lemonboy

Used to have this song on a Disney mix tape back in the 80s, but it was a more somber tone & he was singing it at half speed.

I think it was on Dtv.

The one that started with "Great-grandfather met great-grandmother when she was a shy young miss. And great-grandfather won great-grandmother with words more less like this"?

To give you all an idea about where, when, and how I grew up:  Born in 1973 in Seattle.  And, even to this day, I LOVE some of these Disney songs!  With my favorite uncle nearing the end (he's 84), I remember first hearing some of those songs on the cassette, I think called Best of Disney, Volumes I and II.  I heard some songs like Odelally Hoodelally, I Got No Strings, and It's Not Easy, and Little April Showers, as I rode in the car with my parents, to this uncle and aunt's house in Portland, Oregon.  I am going to see if they have these songs on a CD.  I get the feeling they do, but probably with the songs mixed in with others (like the CD for Christmas with the Chipmunks) has the exact same songs, but a different mixture, on the CD, than it did with the record (yes record!) I had as a kid.

If the world weren't bitterly organized to zap costs whenever bitterness wasn't idealized, ALL worlds, and levels, sweetly relating ABOVE the material, would soften those costs, and all people would survive, as Spirit graciously deferring between - shared knowledge, not over-spent char to burn again as coal wavelengths. Heaven itself is at risk as a sham to eventual determined success. We've got! to dare to challenge! the myth that hatred is funneling judgement to tolerance. It's funneling it to tearing it apart with a macho rage, demanding a shared civilizing price.
