Burdon, Eric - Mama Told Me Not To Come Lyrics

Want some whiskey in your water?
Sugar in your tea?
What's all these crazy questions they're askin' me?
This is the craziest party that could ever be
Don't turn on the lights 'cause I don't wanna see

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"

Open up the window, let some air into this room
I think I'm almost chokin' from the smell of stale perfume
And that cigarette you're smokin' 'bout scare me half to death
Open up the window, sucker, let me catch my breath

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"

The radio is blastin', someone's knockin' at the door
I'm lookin' at my girlfriend - she's passed out on the floor
I seen so many things I ain't never seen before
Don't know what it is - I don't wanna see no more

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
She said, "That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"

"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"

"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"

OMG. I can't believe I'm just now discovering The Animals' version of this song. The epitome of this band.

    Lyrics

Want some whiskey in your water?
    Or sugar in your tea?
What's all these crazy questions they're askin' me?
This is the wildest party that ever could be
Don't turn on the lights 'cause I don't wanna see

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
Mama said, "That ain't the way to have fun, uh-uh!"

Open up the window, let some air into this room
I think I'm almost chokin' on the smell of stale perfume
And that cigarette you're smokin' is about scare me half to death
Open up the window, let me catch my breath

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
Mama said, "That ain't the way to have fun, uh-uh!"

The radio is blastin’ , someone's knockin' on the door
I'm lookin' at my girlfriend - she's passed out on the floor
I seen so many things I ain't never seen before
Don't you turn on the lights - coz I don't wanna see no more

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
Mama said, "That ain't the way to have fun, son!"

  3. K.... H....

It's best known for a 1970 cover by Three Dog Night (which made it more well-known).

  4. G.... B....

Good singer but he butchered this one three dog night kills it

  5. J.... H....

Lot of great takes on this song, this one, Randy Newman's own with him on piano, and of course the great TDN definitive reading. However, Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett also did great versions of this song.

    J.... H....

John Hinsdale Newmans in my opinion is the best one. It’s his special brand of irony no one else sings or plays it better than him.

  6. c.... ....

This was done by studio musicians -backing Eric -I think Frank Zappa was involved in the album Eric is HERE---Producer-also "Kicks was offered to Eric --he turned it down -Paul Revere had a hit with the song

  7. f.... t....

Love Erics voice and LOVE the animals but I prefer three dog night version.

  8. B.... ....

Not bad,but I prefer Three Dog Night's version more..I also think that Randy Newman's pretty good as well!

  9. T.... M....

    #TheAnimals

  10. M.... C....

    Very Great Record :-)

  11. J.... ....

The best cover in my opinion and it introduces the keyboard sound used later by Three Dog Night, borrowed to begin with, I'd guess, from Booker T. and the MG's "Chinese Checkers". Three Dog Night are clearly taking their cues (vocally and musically) from Eric and Animals whose take predates the hit one by three and a half years (this was recorded in 1966).Writer Randy Newman didn't record his own version till 1970. This is the 'original' version of the song in fact.

    J.... ....

    JayChen #Steppenwolf

  12. V.... ....

I've gone and listened to every version of this song and I still think Randy Newman has the best cover.

    V.... ....

    Randy wrote it

  13. R.... ....

Stereophonics feat. Tom Jones Mama Told me Not to Come closer to the three dog night  version..

  14. b.... ....

Mama told me this song sounds better when played by Three Dog Night and The Wolfgang Press.

  15. B.... M....

Ma Ma said this aint they way to sing this Song!

  16. a.... h....

i don't think there's a song whether his own or someone else's that he can't sing. he just has an amazing voice. i had only known of this song because of a i guess you could call it a horror movie spoof about 30yrs ago. but he does this song way better than 3 dog night. i heard eric burdon say in a interview that he has such a husky voice because he got asthma as a child. funny thing for him the air is better in california.

  17. M.... H....

This is lot of fun. Three Dog Night version is great, but so is this!

  18. R.... R....

After hearing Three Dog Night Playing this tune, nobody sounds close to them, Randy does a neat job, but that's because he wrote it

  19. S.... B....

    Mama knows everything..!

  20. P.... R....

    Cool song:)

  21. A.... K....

He's the best singer to ever record this song, it just happens to also be the worst version of it.

    A.... K....

+Arin Kambitsis Wilson Pickett is the best singer to record it, but I have to give props to Burdon for being the only one other than Newman himself to sell the ironic intent/character of the lyrics. This is not a song about how crazy the party is, but how lame the narrator is.

    A.... K....

Jim Morrison should have put out a version of this. lol

    A.... K....

    thats your opinion

    A.... K....

60srecords Yeah, he's probably off the hook.

    A.... K....

60srecords no shit, he’s the one that said it.

  22. C.... A....

Original is just that - original shit.

  23. R.... B....

Not bad,but I will take the Three Dog Night version, as well as Tom Jones.

    R.... B....

    Stereophonics feat. Tom Jones

    R.... B....

Yeah, as much as I like Eric Burdon, I'd have to agree. This song wasn't in his 'wheelhouse'.

    R.... B....

    Try Randy Newman ' original.

    R.... B....

Although Newman wrote this song, the Eric Burdon version was the first version to be released

  24. V.... G....

    fabulous music

  25. A.... G....

eric burdon makes this song in a pop style better than three dog night.

    A.... G....

@Aurelio Gago well that's an opinion and you know what organ an opinion opines upon?? Ha Ha ha!!

    Cheers- the always gringo.

  26. H.... S....

Fabulous Music:)) Reminiscent of a groovy era of parties and music and fun.
Hostess passed out on the floor, and that cigarette you're smokin'-it's about scare me half to death
Wildest party that ever could be..all those crazy questions they're asking me..whisky in water..
obviously, they're all off their tree... and been a while since I've been to one of those parties..!!
Good reflective lyrics and wild music.

  27. D.... ....

I only knew this by Randy Newman but I never knew that he wrote it for Eric Burdon.

    Great song.

    D.... ....

He didn't specifically write it for Eric, did he? If he did please present the evidence but what a great version you agree!

    D.... ....

+MusicMC1 He wrote it specifically for him.

    D.... ....

+Bernie Lomax No he didn't. You don't know the Alan Price connection I assume or how he heard it. It was written, but not for The Animals. Nor was "Simon Smith" or "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today".

    D.... ....

Jeff Gross he definitely wrote it for Burdon when he was recording his first solo album in 66 check Wikipedia

    D.... ....

Can we all just agree that Newman’s version is the best?

  28. s.... ....

    EB got it right.

I think that a lot of the people who claim foggy memories were not there. If they were, they shouldn't brag about the fog.  I am going to resurrect the word "retards", as not applying to disabled people, but to morons who brag about themselves as having foggy memories.

  29. B.... ....

jolcom, I really don't care who came with the song first.even if it was the animals, their version wasn't done very well. I prefer T.D.N.'s take on the song.

  30. j.... ....

They didn't come out the same year. This version came out in 1967, Three Dog Night's version in 1970.

  31. B.... ....

give me Three Dog Nights version anytime.especially since they came out the same year.I don't care who randy newman wrote it for.

  32. M.... W....

Yes it is funny . I love Eric but this song seem doesn't fit him good . But thanks all friends nce wk/end . Mike

  33. K.... W....

Tune was actually written by Randy Newman for Eric Burdon....
Randy never released it until after The Animals did which was in 1966, and then he released it right about the same time that Three Dog Night did....in 1970.

  34. A.... ....

    It's the original.

  35. g.... ....

Wow, I can't choose between this and Three Dog Night, they're both awesome...

    g.... ....

gorillazhead choose the Newman version it’s the best.

  36. K.... K....

No offense taken my man...I don't mind being corrected...especially when I'm wrong ;)
Actually I'm lucky I remember anything from back in the 70's...there's at least a couple of entire decades back then that are foggy in my memory...but I do remember that the weed was good ;)
I said something once here on YouTube about a Pink Floyd concert I was at in Ottawa in the late seventies...but I kinda guessed at the year.......I guessed wrong...lol...you should've seen the heat I took for that...lol

  37. K.... K....

    Yeah...lol...I know...you're right...!!!
I don't know why but I always got TDN and the Five Man Electrical Band mixed up...they were both popular around the same time when I lived in Ottawa back in the 70's.
    Once again...I stand corrected...;)

  38. K.... K....

    Yes..you're right...I stand corrected.

  39. K.... K....

This song was also made popular by a Canadian band called Three Dog Night (1970)
I'm a big fan of "original" artists...but Three Dog Night does a great job on this song!

  40. G.... ....

@aalhazzred Wilson Pickett's version might be the best. Captures the ironic nerdiness of Newman's lyrics while still maintaining a funky cool.

  41. V.... V....

Is anyone aware that the Devil is with them in the picture, because they love the devil for freeing their minds...

  42. k.... ....

@2468oldschooltimes Rock and roll is the devil's music! Don't you know nuthin'?

  43. f.... ....

so glad someone finally found this. i remember when this version came out - it will always be my favorite!

  44. N.... K....

    Thank you!!!!

  45. C.... W....

I was looking for a different version of this tune I hear on the oldies radio station occasionally that I can't find on YT. This ain't it :)

  46. t.... ....

@2468oldschooltimes they may have recorded the first version, but its not actually their song, its written by randy newman

  47. d.... w....

still nothing like "Spill The Wine !!...".

  48. I.... ....

P.J. Proby's version of this came out at around the same time (in the spring of 1967).

  49. T.... ....

This was billed as "Eric Burdon & The Animals", but it's Eric, 2nd Animals drummer Barry Jenkins, & studio/session players.....

  50. A.... ....

blimey I thought three dog night was the original

  51. n.... ....

There was a version of this on an album
called either "Eric Burdon & The Animals"
or "The Animals featuring Eric Burdon".
I can't remember which. It had a white
cover with an Illustration of Eric on the
front, no photo, on the MGM label. The
album included a really good version
of "I Think It's Going To Rain Today".

  52. r.... 4....

There was a 2nd version of this song too, in France and Japan only.

  53. D.... E....

Didn't know till now Eric Burdon recorded this song 3 years before 3 Dog Night!

  54. M.... ....

Espectular obra musical. Un ejemplo más de la ineptitud del mundo para dar reconocimiento a la música que adquiere la categoría de arte... Que sobrevivan Eric Burdon y Los Animales!

  55. s.... ....

This sounds like the theme song from the monsters

  56. I.... ....

    I like Newmans own version.

  57. L.... C....

Yeah This is Eric in solo recording ... always great , but try Mama Told Me Not To Come with Three Dog Night

  58. s.... ....

Oh my God! I could have never imagine that thia was a song of the Animals! I heard Tom Jones' version, he is good but this is the original! :)

  59. M.... X....

    Yesssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!
