Bugg, Jake - Hearts That Strain Lyrics

In a remote compound space
Took the life of a man with the same name
Slashed his side on the blade
On the handle his blood mourned his fate

And there's a demon in their veins
And their blood is sinned
And yet they know in their brains
But it still gets sinned

There's nothing more I hate
Than hearts that strain
Hearts that strain

Celophane riddled wall
Closing in on the man who's nervous
Burned his side on the flames
On the fire his flesh mourned his fate

And there's a demon in their veins
And their blood is sinned
And yet they know in their brains
But it still gets in

There's nothing more I hate
Than hearts that strain
Hearts that strain

And there's a demon in their veins
And their blood is sinned
And yet they know in their brains
But it still gets in

There's nothing more I hate
Than hearts that strain
Hearts that strain

Bugg, Jake Hearts That Strain Comments
  1. M.... ....

I wrote that Jake’s voice very often doesn’t do his bidding. ‘Very often’ overstates it for his recent work (it was so in notably many live performances in 2013-14). But there are still recent examples, for example in live performances of Scene, Kiss Like the Sun, and Old Man.
In saying this, I don’t mean to say that Jake’s voice is unattractive. On the contrary, I find it generally very attractive – and much improved over recent years, in control and in depth. But I think that it can still be improved a lot further and that also, for example, its stunning melodicity could come out much more clearly.

Jake’s musical uniqueness doesn’t have to do with his voice but his voice can be very good if he takes good care of it. There are perhaps some musicians who can have an acceptable voice while smoking the hell out of themselves but Jake is not one of them. One reason for this is that he is too good a musician – he immediately loses by whatever he can’t have his voice do. (What is acceptable for others isn’t for him.) And another reason is that, as said, it isn’t the quality of his voice as such that makes him special. His voice can be very good but he has to look after it very well.

Jake is the exception, I like Sex Pistols and Bauhaus, but because he is so brilliant, I like Jake Bugg too
