Buddy Holly - Midnight Shift Lyrics

Well if you see ol' Annie, better give her a lift
'Cause Annie's been a-workin' on the midnight shift
If Annie puts her hair up on her head
Paints them lips up bright bright red
Wears that dress that fits real tight
Starts stayin' out late till the middle of the night
Says to her friend, give her a lift
Well Annie's been a-workin' on the midnight shift
If she acts a little funny, seems a little strange
Starts spending your money for brand new things
Tells you that she wants to use the car
Never explains what she wants it for
Brother, there just ain't no ifs
'Cause Annie's been a-workin' on the midnight shift

Well early in the morning when the sun comes up
You look at ol' Annie and she looks kinda rough
You tell her, honey get out of that bed
She says, leave me alone I'm just about dead
Brother, there just ain't no ifs
'Cause Annie's been a-workin' on the midnight shift

If you got a good mama that's stayin' at home
You better enjoy, 'cause it won't last long
When you think everything's all right
She starts slippin' round in the middle of the night
Brother, there just ain't no ifs
'Cause Annie's been a-workin' on the midnight shift

    J.... ....

Tomorrow's Sunday so I can binge on Youtube tonight.

  15. B.... W....

I used this song in high school to show an example of "assonance". Only the genius of Buddy Holly could rhyme the words "car" and "for."

  16. N.... ....

    Good song

  17. A.... C....

My brother and I were listening to this the other day and said "why does this sound so much better than the Crickets stuff/I've never heard him play guitar like that before." Pretty sure this is one of the ones he did in Nashville with Owen Bradley and that's Sonny Curtis playing lead.

  18. C.... M....

Buddy rip always in our hearts

  19. j.... m....

holly didnt write this song. it was written by luke mcdaniel (jef daniels) a hillbilly singer and sometime rockabilly singer.

  20. A.... ....

    It's sick innit bruv?

  21. R.... M....

This was banned here in the UK by the BBC which was about right for the BBC back then as if they played any Rock N Roll at that time anyway stupid gits they were

    @Bill Hurt yes

  28. w.... o....

I was 13 or 14 when this was released in the UK after Buddy had been killed. We had all his singles (couldn't afford the LP) Peggy Sue, Rave On, Looking For Someone To Love, Think It Over, etc but this was different - TexMex I think they used to call it.

It had Ollie Vee on the other side and was my most treasured possession after Elvis' Baby Let's Play House. Over half a century later it sounds just as good... maybe even better. His death hit us very hard - it seemed the world would never be the same again. And it never was.

    w.... o....

    willie otoole buddy wasnt killed

    w.... o....

Soooo he faked his death, along with everyone else in the plane with him?

    w.... o....

I think what Jules is saying is the music the levy didn't dry because buddy holly lives Everytime we play rock n roll buddy's memory lives on

  29. J.... W....

"Brotha their ain't no ifs cuz Annie's been working on a midnight shift" a song about prostitution, Buddy was a head of his time. This song has a humor to it, it seems.

    J.... W....

+Jordy Tony Not necessarily prostitution. "Working" in the lingo of jazz and R&B musicians meant "having sex"--indeed, this is a take-off on Hank Ballard's raunchy R&B classic "Work With Me Annie." She wasn't necessarily selling it--but she definitely was "working" with somebody!

    J.... W....

    +RaananVolesPianist either way it's a great song

    J.... W....

@RaananVolesPianist thank you for properly correcting that dude. Buddy holly was not at all ahead of his time. Nor this song. Hank Ballard and the midniters, the drifters, and the coasters, clovers most definitely ahead of the game.

  30. J.... K....

Straight in, straight out, no messing.

  31. d.... g....

thank you buddy holly your music is something to live by.

  32. R.... J....

February,,1959, that was it !! The day the music died ,,,r,I,p, buddy boy !!!xx

  34. M.... T....

To all music trivia buffs: Is this the answer song to " Work With Me,Annie"?

    M.... T....

+Mike Thomas The answer to Hank Ballard's "Annie" was Etta James' "Roll with me Henry", later titled "Dance with me Henry" written by Johnny Otis, Hank Ballard and Etta James. In the parlance of R&B and R&R, guess what "dance" and "roll" meant to us. The conservative people tried to kill Rock & Roll because they believed it was ruining the moral fibre of the youth but the power of the music was too great.

    M.... T....

I think there is at least a dozen records about 'Annie ' Hank Ballard sang one of them.

    M.... T....

Hank Ballard had three "Annie" songs that I remember, "Work With Me Annie",  "Annie Had a Baby" and "Annie's Aunt Fanny". Although these were "banned" records, I did hear them on the radio while I was going school in Abilene, Texas in the early '60's. I don't remember the station name but I listened to KOMA in Oklahoma City a lot and some Mexican stations that broadcast giant wattage signals north. Ballard also did "Get It" and "Sexy Ways" which were  sexually explicit. It was good R&B, (some say Rock and Roll). He was a great singer and he had the guts to release this music.

  35. R.... R....

Wish music were like this instead of miley cyrus

    R.... R....

Right, just right..... but who the Hell is miles cyrus, sound´s like ...i don´t wanna know

    R.... R....

Commercial radio has indeed evolved. Try Public Radio. Oh! and lose the Hollyweird subscription. Taste the freedom.

    R.... R....

Rodolfo Reyes now its soundcloud rap shit

    R.... R....

@John Kavanagh our music should just stop trying to evolve lol. Those musicians aren't going to stick down in history like these ones will. None of them are revolutionary. It's the same old garbage with a different name.

There are some exceptions of modern day musicians with talent... But my goodness is it few and far between.

    R.... R....

    Bring it back

  36. S.... L....

    Tasha Champbitchin

  37. T.... M....

    Just wow !!

  38. M.... d....

    The best rockabilly

  39. L.... ....

I was born in the wrong generation

    L.... ....

    Me too..

    L.... ....

Be true to yourself the generation thing is for sheep.Dont follow the flock be a rebel and listen to your music not what people your age group think they're supposed to listen to.I was from the Guns N Roses generation but I loved Buddy,Elvis and Jerry Lee.I'm 42 now and I still love Buddy and Elvis and JLL as much as I love GNR and Motley Crue.Today I hear kids talking about the music of their generation and I wonder just how deep their influence goes when they have no roots.

  40. N.... F....

    Great guitar from Sonny Curtis.

  41. b.... ....

    Rockabilly

  42. P.... N....

To the person who pressed the dislike button...just what is your point?

    P.... N....

Pete Nineteensixty he walked in on Annie during her late midnight shift

    P.... N....

Maybe he works the midnight shift...lol
