Bucks Fizz - Heart Of Stone Lyrics

Beneath the white fire of the moon
Love's wings are broken all too soon
We never learn
Hurt together, hurt alone
Don't you sometimes
Wish your heart was a made of stone

We turn the wheel, and break the chain
Put steel to steel, and laugh at pain
We're dreamers in castle's made of sand
The road to Eden's overgrown
Don't you sometimes
Wish your heart was made of stone

Look at the headline
Big crowd at the crazy house
Long queue for the joker's shoes
Ten rounds in the ring with love
Do you lose and win
Or win and lose

Sweet rain like mercy in the night
(Lay me down, wash away the sorrow)
Caress the world and set it right
(Lay me down, show me your tomorrow)
Summer tears, winter and the moment's flown
Don't you sometimes
Wish your heart was a made of stone
Mercy, mercy, wish your heart was a heart of stone

You get the picture
No room for the innocent
Peak season in lonely town
Knocked out of the ring by love
Are you down and up
Or up and down

I ask the river for a sign
(In a dream, we go on together)
How long is love supposed to shine
(In a dream, diamonds are forever)
But you and I, hurt together, hurt alone
Don't you sometimes
Wish your heart was made of stone

Mercy, mercy, wish your heart was a heart of stone
(With a heart of stone, you'll be well protected)
Don't you sometimes
Wish your heart was made of stone
(With a heart of stone, you'll be well connected)

This was their last original song, and definitely a fitting finale for this band.

Also loved the rules of the game

    She is fit

  5. T.... ....

Love it. Just a great pop song. I'm sure most folk now would think that Bucks Fizz covered the Cher track, not the other way round! Both versions very good because of the actual song.

  7. D.... P....

I came here looking for the cher version.... Wasnt too disapointed to find this one!

  8. L.... M....

You got to say buck fizz had some class songs

  9. R.... ....

This is by far the best version of Heart of Stone. Cher's cover was completely unoriginal and a pedestrian copy of the Fizz version.

  10. A.... D....

Bucks Fizz recorded 'Heart Of Stone' along with 'Young Hearts' & 'Here's Looking At You' for a 6th studio album in 1988 but it was never completed they instead released a compilation album titled 'The Story So Far'.

  11. S.... J....

Lovely song. Shame it wasn't a bigger hit for them.

  12. B.... 1....

Such an amazing song i love bucks fizz and cher versions

  13. J.... D....

    One of my favourites

  14. P.... L....

    Are they all still alive??,

  15. R.... E....

Wow, so there is a ghost somewhere in this video?
"The mansion was owned by Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees who claimed that his house was haunted by the ghost of a gardener who enjoys playing pranks on the Gibb family. As a reference to this, a gardener was fleetingly seen in some shots"

  16. U.... F....

    Love this song x

  17. J.... S....

Incredible song, only recently found out Bucks Fizz sang this before Cher! As someone who has lived and loved this song as a Cher song, I have to say Bucks Fizz (with amazing Bobby Gee vocals) deserved big success with this song.

  18. J.... M....

    What happened to Jay?

  19. M.... ....

this was the original version. Cher butchered it, but was a commercial success. You don't always get what you want.

    M.... ....

    Mookawow Cher made them rich

  20. M.... B....

This is THE definitive version for me and excels in every way.

  21. R.... H....

You know, Bucks Fizz is often used a punchline for jokes about 80's pop but this song (along with a large number of their singles) show that they were actually an outstanding band with great writers and producers behind them. They deserve far more credit than they get.

    R.... H....

Rodney Hrvatin The curse of Eurovision.

    R.... H....

Never even heard of BF let alone their being used as a punch line. In any case I like both versions

    R.... H....

@edna butler You must be American.

  22. n.... ....

I grew up with this version and only know and love this version

    n.... ....

nisabahrim definitely listen to Cher’s version. it’s beautiful, and it gave the title to her 1989 album which featured Just Like Jesse James and If I Could Turn Back Time

  23. A.... L....

I look this song it being back good memories from amanda

  24. K.... C....

Too cutesy for the sentiment of the song. Jay added an edge to this group that was missing when she left.

  25. R.... S....

Amazing you never hear bobby gee theses days .good singer and writer if songs .never got the push he deserved as a solo artist

  26. S.... B....

I didn't know Cher actually covered this one. I had heard the name "Bucks Fizz", but had no idea this was originally written for them. I have to say; stripped of the grandiose arrangement that characterized Cher's version (one I will always love, by the way), it brings out the hitherto unheard melodies from all four singers. All in all, a great job.

    S.... B....

Shane Bailey There’s a nice stripped back acoustic version on the Platinum Collection box set, with the are you ready and get the money ad libs during the headline verses. Plus a version with Cheryl on lead from their 30th anniversary Up Until Now compilation, and they recorded a kind of country style version as OBF too, on their Fame and Fortune album. They’re all on YouTube somewhere if you want a listen.

  27. A.... F....

Things don't not work out with Polydor records they went back to RCA not bad for a comeback attempt but cher version trumps this.

  28. V.... T....

I like cher and bucks fizz versions amazing song though who wrote it ?

    V.... T....

Andy Hill and Pete Sinfield - who also wrote Celine Dion's Think Twice :)

    V.... T....

DistantCousin Andy’s collabs with Pete provided some of their finest singles and album tracks - One Way Love, Land of Make Believe, I Hear Talk, You & Your Heart So Blue, Keep Each Other Warm...

  29. I.... T....

    Great music ! :-)

  30. S.... S....

The best version. A shame this band did not go on to better things as the musical direction they were taking in their last couple of years was good.

  31. c.... s....

always loved this Version of the song they looked so distinguished and elegant

  32. j.... c....

I seem to remember they got in The Guiness world record book with this one for being the quickest recorded song from the recording studio to actually being printed as a record and played live on tv in the broom cupboard on BBC1 by Phillip Schofield . Anyone else remember this?

    j.... c....

Yes it was featured during an episode of record breakers when Cheryl was co- presenter.

    j.... c....

It was Andy Crane, but yeah. There’s a few vids up of them performing the track in the Record Breakers studio, but it would be nice to see the film report of the recording process again.

  33. S.... H....

I love this song (and Bucks Fizz) but I don't know why Bobby had to always do the lead vocals on the majority of their singles. Cheryl, Jay, Mike (and Shelley) all had as good (if not better vocals) but they were in the background so much because of the favouritism shown to Bobby when it came to who sang lead! Cheryl Baker original sang lead vocals on this song (as can be heard on their Lost Masters album and their Up Until Now - 30th Anniversary Hits Collection) and I think she sang it ten times better than Bobby did. Maybe if they'd released Cheryl's version it would have been a bigger hit! As for Cher's cover I don't like it because I can't stand Cher's foghorn vocals! I like her as an actress but not a singer. Anyway, love this song, just wish Cheryl's version had been released. Btw, does anyone have her version that could be uploaded here as an audio video, please? I've searched YouTube and can't find it. It would be good for more people to hear Cheryl's version. :)

    S.... H....

    Spader Holic https://youtu.be/rodDOIRy9S0

    S.... H....

After Hand Cut they tried to give their music a harder edge and I suspect that Bobby G's voice was the only one that suited that style.

Some people think that giving them a hard rock sound with singles like Talking In Yoir Sleep and Magical were what killed them, but I actually think their best music came for this era.

  34. L.... ....

Cher's version is too over the top, this one is better.

    L.... ....

Cher's is better but Bucks Fizz (though better with Jay) is such an underrated group.

  35. G.... L....

    MY GOD!!!
THE BOY IS MY SON FROM SAO PAULO BRAZIL!!!!!! BUT HE WAS BORN IN 2015!!!!! I LOVED THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. t.... ....

Getting chill watching this. I love Cher but this is way better .

  37. y.... ....

Bottom line ........Whether you prefer this version or Cher's it's just a great bit of songwriting.

    y.... ....

    yesterdaydreaming indeed it is

    y.... ....

indeed but i dun c a problem in likin both versions

  38. A.... D....

Heart of Stone, Young Hearts & Here's Looking At You were 3 songs recorded for what meant to be Bucks Fizz's 6th studio album in 1988 but they never finished the album.

  39. T.... C....

    I like both versions.

  40. D.... F....

This is by far the best (and original) version. Much as I like Cher, her version can't hold a candle next to this.

  41. T.... T....

everyone should have a huge fireplace to dance in front of :) classic understated vocals loved it then and love it now

  42. L.... F....

this was an over looked classic great song from bucks fizz still sounds as good today and still far superior to chers version,it might not have made the charts, but it did manage to get them in the guiness book of world records for the fastest single to be recorded printed and played on radio the whole process i think took 46 mins

    L.... F....

Add 10 more minutes to make this video, even with the costume change. What could have been!

  43. M.... ....

I would love to hear Boyzone sing this. Mikey on lead vocals, doing Bobby's part.

  44. R.... M....

Just finished watching an interview with Andy Hill; he also thinks the Bucks Fizz version is the better one, and was surprised Cher's version ended up topping the charts. Oh, well. Still preferred here to Cher's histrionics. Barely cracked the UK Top 50, and wasn't released in the States. Got it on "The Ultimate Anthology".

  45. C.... C....

I love cher version too such an amazing song

  46. B.... N....

    What a fantastic song!!!!

  47. K.... M....

I like both Cher's version and this the original one, which demonstrates what a strong voice Bobby Gee has.

Andy Hill (who wrote it with Pete Sinfield) and later gave it to Cher after it failed for BF has said on record that he prefers the BF version. Cher would have known on first listen that this was the kind of track that would fit in snugly with her AOR repertoire and manages to make this song her own; and it is a very good version.

Around the time Shelley replaced Jay, BF seemed to embrace the American Rawk sound having abandoned their pop roots at this point....perhaps a strategy to break the US chart, but it didn't work. It's not late for Fizz to break America - if their back catalogue was turned into a musical production a la Mamma Mia it would be a hit as they have at least 12 great songs in their repertoire.

    K.... M....

Cher's version is more powerful and explores the full range of the song but I agree that Bobby's vocals are so underrated.

  48. C.... H....

Can't believe I am only hearing the Bucks Fizz Version for the 1st time.Have to admit that I do prefer Cher's version of the song though.Shame it wasn't a bigger hit in the U.K.

  49. m.... ....

this for me is bucks fizz best song not to have gotten into top 40 should have been top 10

  50. B.... G....

    Great song

  51. K.... W....

Good to know they are now reunited in their early eighties line-up, although without Mike Gee.

    K.... W....

What. You mean Bobby Gee?? He's the one that's not with them.

    K.... W....

+Kevin White There are two different groups now; one with Bobby Gee and three new singers, which Gee's wife owns the rights to call themselves Bucks Fizz, and one with Cheryl, Jay and Mike and Bobby McVey. Kind of sad to see, but those latter three have made it clear, by rejecting a one-million pound offer to reunite, that they're through with Bobby Gee. Good on them.

    K.... W....

    +Ella Kelly Yes, sorry.

    K.... W....

I'm not surprised Cheryl, Mike and Jay want nothing to do with Bobby Gee, who has been acting like a spoilt little boy in relation to legal issues concerning the use of the band's name. No wonder he's on his third marriage. It would appear that, like Lindsey Buckingham - whom he tries to imitate vocally - he's not an easy person to get on with.

  52. R.... M....

It's to our detriment in the US that Bucks Fizz did not chart this here. There's nothing wrong with this (Andy Hill wrote one hell of a song), or "Keep Each Other Warm", or several others. It's not the first time RCA botched a UK group over here (Middle of the Road comes to mind); I was programming Adult Contemporary radio around this time and, if the 45 had crossed my desk, I would have given it a shot on the air. And, yeah, Shelly and Cheryl were quite lovely. Shelley did her level best replacing a very popular Jay; give her credit for that.

    R.... M....

+RJ McAllister Cher covered it of course, and it became the title track of her best selling album. Cher always knew a great UK song (Believe is another such)

  53. R.... T....

it was actually written for bucks fizz

  54. X.... R....

So much better than that pitiful excuse of Cher's cover........

  55. A.... D....

Heart Of Stone, Young Hearts & Here's Looking At You were recorded in 1988 for a 6th studio album but they only completed 3 songs and abandoned plans for a 6th album this was their final single and the B-Side was 'Here's Looking At You'.

    A.... D....

A mistake, because those three tracks are quite good; don't know if it was the label behind that or the pressures within the group that drove that decision.

  56. Z.... ....

Shame it wasn't a bigger hit but they'd been off the scene for a couple of years, and Cheryl was known as more of a kids telly presenter then, so they were promoting this while she was making jelly baby sandwiches and shit on Eggs 'n' Baker!

  57. i.... ....

I thought this one was written for Cher since it suits her voice so perfectly. I'm not fan of her, but anyway she kidnapped this song for good.

    i.... ....

inhmn That is just wrong. Heaven is a place on Earth.

    i.... ....

    weirdo freak …?

  58. L.... A....

    No bloody way!

  59. k.... a....

loved bucks fizz . seen them live years ago .. one of the best acts EVER

    k.... a....

+kevin allcock Did you know they're touring currently, Kevin? Search Paradise Regained Tour for dates, not many left now though I don't think. Cheryl, Jay, Mike and Bobby McVay who was in Sweet Dreams, our 1983 Eurovision entry.

+ZanduckTV2 Touring this year too, 35th anniversary! Make Believe Tour it's called. Dates and venues on Cheryl's website -cherylbaker.net

  60. m.... b....

    Cher sung it better

    m.... b....

Cher autotuned it better you mean. Bucks Fizz maybe didn't have the production value of Cher but at least they didn't get a computer to do their singing for them.

    m.... b....

To be honest Steve that probably does sound right

    m.... b....

    cher sucks dick

    m.... b....

Ulster Groundhopper autotune didn’t exist in 1988 when she recorded her version of the song…

    m.... b....

    martjek nah

  61. c.... ....

Well you learn something new everyday, I like this version better. It's sung rather than belted out.

  62. J.... S....

Good but just personally like Cher's version best. Hers, to me, captures more feeling and ache for what is lost.

    J.... S....

Cher's to me is what Johnny Farnham was to Three Dog Night's One, doesn't hold for the entirety

    J.... S....

    Jj Stewart spot on

  63. G.... C....

How can this song have had so few views and likes?  It is absolutely brilliant.

  64. E.... G....

LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! I remember buying Bucks Fizz's and Cher's versions back in the day. They're both great. But Bucks Fizz just about edge it for me. Bucks Fizz are a much under-rated group who recorded many great songs. But the stations that play 80's music always forget them. Probably because they're not considered 'cool'. Crazy.

  65. R.... R....

I think both Cher and Bucks Fizz nailed this song.  I can't get it out of my head.  Wish I knew what all the lyrics mean.  Sort of confusing.

  66. T.... o....

Krásna verzia piesne Heart Of Stone, ktorým sa Bucks Fizz vrátili do rebríčka v UK. V lete 1986 uzatvorili zmluvu so spoločnosťou Polydor a nahrali pieseň čiastočne spievanú v swahilčine New Beginning(Mamba Seyra), ktorá vrátila skupinu do TOP 10 a v lete 1986 skončila na 8.m. V roku 1988 sa vrátili k spoločnosti RCA a nahrali tento svoj posledný hit.

  67. I.... M....

Sorry but although this one is the original it doesn't stand a chance next to Cher's version. This one sounds so shallow. Cher's emotion and vocals on this one are impeccable and so right when it comes to her life and career. Amen

    I.... M....

    Emotional thanks to autotune.

    I.... M....

There was no autotune when she covered the song. Btw, I prefer Bucks Fizz's version.

    I.... M....

I think Cher's voice is like a ship's foghorn, awful! My favourite version is sadly the one Bucks Fizz never released as their single, the one with group member Cheryl Baker singing the lead vocals, not Bobby Gee. Cheryl sang it so much better than Bobby, in my opinion and I think it would have been a bigger hit for Bucks Fizz had they released Cheryl's version instead of always giving favouritism to Bobby when it came to singing lead. He's not even that great a singer, Cheryl Baker is a lot better!

    I.... M....

    FreakyPeoplez yep. totally agree

    I.... M....

Spader Holic and where can we hear Sheryl’s version?

  68. P.... B....

Better than Cher in my opinion

  69. b.... ....

no jay aston I thought this was released before jay left?

    b.... ....

Nope. Was written by Andy Hill who wrote most of Bucks Fizz in 1988 and Jay left in 1985 so definitely after Jay left.

    b.... ....

+Lee Horton Shelly Preston is the other girl singer here.

  70. G.... M....

This is my favourite Cher song and then I find out its by Buck Fizz.
Its great, how did I ever miss this when it came out ?

  71. F.... F....

yes its on youtube. just came back from listening to it :D

  72. T.... S....

aaaah i see .....well that part wasnt all that clear im afraid

  73. D.... C....

I know this is original versionI was being complimentaary using slang.

  74. T.... S....

eeeeeer ...hate to kill your buzz ...but this is bucks fizz song ...cher covered it

  75. T.... S....

this is the original so im afraid i dont share your opinion sorry dude

  76. L.... ....

Haven't heard this in ages. Had several Bucks Fizz albums on Cassette when I was younger. Think I players them until they warped :-)

  77. a.... v....

the last song before they finished, was only 11 when this came out,but i do remember it.not their best song by far,but they had come a hell of a long way by then, survived a terrible coach crash and had 3 number ones in the process.britains abba in my book!

  78. D.... C....

Sorry Cher but they just kill this song!

  79. m.... ....

oh maaan this is sooo good . I hated the cher one cuz its like a sheep...this bands awesome as fcuk n the girls are PROPER hot chicks ffs

  80. r.... ....

    a tad Abba esque?

  81. F.... R....

the girls where more of a backing group then a group,
