Buckinghams, The - Mercy, Mercy, Mercy Lyrics

My baby, she may not a-look
Like one of those bunnies out of the playboy club
But she got somethin' much greater than gold
Crazy 'bout that girl 'cause she got so much soul

I said she got the kind of lovin', kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow, glad that I'm her fellow
And I know that she knocks me off my feet
(Have mercy on me)
'Cause she knocks me off my feet

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love me like you do, yeah

Oh, my baby when she walks by
All the fellows go, ooh, and I know why
It's simply 'cause that girl, she looks so fine
And if she ever leaves me I would lose my mind

She got the kind of lovin', kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow, glad that I'm her fellow
And I know that she knocks me off my feet
(Have mercy on me)
'Cause she knocks me off my feet, hey

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love me like you do

Hey, everybody in the neighborhood
Will testify that my girl, she looks so good now
Yeah, she's so fine, she'd give eyesight to the blind
And if she ever leaves me I would lose my mind

She got the kind of lovin', kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow glad that I'm her fellow
And I know that she knocks me off my feet
(Have mercy on me)
'Cause she knocks me off my feet

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love me like you do
Baby, yeah, feel yeah, it's alright
Mercy, mercy, mercy

Buckinghams, The Mercy, Mercy, Mercy Comments
  1. B.... B....

We saw these guys last night at a charity concert. Three of the originals (I think) and the keyboard player who has been with them for 35 years. They were great! And, they told the story about showing up for a performance on TV and the stage was adorned with British Flags!

  2. P.... ....

The bassist fingers aren’t even moving lol

  3. D.... M....

    Yum-Yum

  4. D.... ....

Great song! Learn it on guitar the right way. Go to "Guitarversum Sandra Sherman" here on Youtube. Excellent guitar teacher, accurate and easy to learn from. No, I don't know her personally. All guitarists should check out her channel! She won't rush you through anything, she shows mercy!

  5. I.... B....

They look a bit like the Bootleg Beatles!

    I.... B....

They were funkier.. with their own Chicago sounds

  6. I.... B....

What's with all the Union Jacks? This band was from Chicago Ill.

BTW, that's the worst piece of pretend guitar playing I've ever seen!

  7. f.... f....

Gotta admit. they gave Cannonball a run for his money with this one.

  8. L.... H....

Incredible tune and you can see how bad the record companies tried to cash in on the British invasion these guys straight American I don't understand their songs were great to stand alone.

  9. C.... C....

I love this song and The Buckinghams but I don't understand how The Buckinghams got away
with playing this song when it was played and probably written by Cannonball Adderley. I think
there might be a copyright issue.

  10. u.... ....

Where the freak are the horn players that open the song?

  11. E.... G....

The lip-synching and play-synching are unfortunate..........at least the guitars had cables attached to them..;-). I'm sure the groups could have done this well live (minus the horns, of course)....probably the TV show's decision....

    E.... G....

They're singing live along with the recording

  12. P.... B....

Love this song this group ! I was 11 when it came out !

  13. n.... ....

An American band called the Buckinghams who perform with British flags all over the place but dress like sheriffs in that first picture

  14. E.... ....

Like one of those gentlemen on ladies night

  15. E.... ....

My guy is made out of love

  16. B.... S....

Thank Joe Zawinal and Cannonball Adderley for it.

    B.... S....

    Wow! Who would have thought?

  17. M.... a....

This is a terrible sellout and not necessary for these guys, great song though

  18. M.... A....

HELL YES!! I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOR YEARS! THANK YOU!

  19. E.... ....

    Canon Ball Aterly

  20. E.... ....

...an aw ful song my boy is a toy

  21. P.... ....

The composer of this great tune,Joe Zawinul, made an album called "Money in the Pocket" I imagine this version put money in Joe's pocket.

  22. R.... S....

How old were you when you found out that this song not only had lyrics, but was written by a British sound marketed American band??

  23. L.... C....

i forgot all about this song. thnx for posting!

  24. D.... G....

    Bonne toune mais si poche....

  25. j.... ....

Wow - this is annoying. A jazzy-soul tune converted into brit-pop by an american band. Not my cup of tea ...

  26. D.... B....

My cousins band opened for them in Peoria 1968..I made 25 dollars unloading and loading there equipment..good money in those days..might have as much as my cousins band got

  27. V.... S....

    Lembra muito os Beatles

  28. S.... ....

The Buckinghams were really great songwriters. I love this tune.

    S.... ....

    Joe Zawinul

  29. A.... C....

why did they make a beatles parody out of this wtf

  30. D.... M....

Hey baby they're playing our song. Mercy mercy mercy Susan. It's kind of a drag this video isn't totally live. Don't you care?

  31. C.... ....

This track is a classic that is unique in the way it displays both singers in between drummer and guitars..very original and it works!!

  32. l.... ....

    I saw this and listened...I like 💞

  33. B.... M....

Why dont you nit picking morons enjoy this version for what it is. Who cares who wrote it, is it jazz, or rythem and blues, etc. You Americans are such winers over petty stuff.

  34. p.... ....

So funny. There is no guitar in the song.

  35. p.... t....

Absolutely Beautiful Masterpiece, great music & great memories of life

  36. M.... B....

Is Marty Grebb one of the lead vocalists?

  37. A.... T....

I was first introduced to this song in its jazz rendition, so of course, that's my favorite: https://youtu.be/WWQcBBt6FGg - but I think it's a great song in any genre. Music is limitless. :-)

  38. R.... L....

I suspect that only Dennis Trufano, on the left, is actually signing. He had the perfect voice. I used to hear them every night from WLS and WCFL in Chicagoland. The big 50,000-watt AM stations could be heard after dark in a large swath of the US. Not anymore...

  39. L.... M....

Can anybody tell, this is a dub over? Just any clues? Drummer doesn't hit the symbols, bass player hand never moves much. Oh well, loved this song to no end back in the summer of 67.

  40. S.... M....

they put the british flags up because they thought they were a british band.

  41. r.... ....

Now I know where that guy from "Big Bang Theory" got his haircut from.

  42. J.... U....

My favorite Buckinghams song! Dennis Tufano was an outstanding vocalist.

  43. j.... ....

Zawinful liked this version and e$pecially liked the royalties. He considered it a blessing and a winning lottery ticket that it was recorded by the Buckinghams and became a main$tream hit. As for the jazz thugs here who are dissing it, do you homework: Only the vocalists from The Buckinghams are actually performing on the recording; the music was played by ALL JAZZ SESSION MUSICIANS!

  44. R.... H....

I've been looking for this song for a long time. I thought these guys were black. It was played on K.G.F.J. in Los Angeles back in the 60's

  45. R.... U....

I think the Buckinghams was the first album I bought, in 1969. Up til then it was 45s. Most ppl bought 45 hit singles til the 70s rock scene started. Those 45s only had a paper sleeve and most got played to death. Those were the days my friend.

  46. S.... M....

jazz snob... this is so terrible I must warn the straights...

  47. l.... o....

Man, dressed as Rebel Officers on their album cover. They looking good.

    l.... o....

Yes, and nobody screamed "Racist!" about it. It's only in recent years that SJWs and other hypocritical virtue signalers have demanded that all things "Southern" be erased from our history and from view and that anyone who doesn't conform to their narrow (and dishonest) ways is a racist and/or some other terrible thing. It took a few decades longer than George Orwell's "1984," but the Thought Police have definitely taken hold of the western world.
I'm glad I lived through the '50s, '60s, and '70s -- before PC infected everything.
    This is a great song!

  48. b.... ....

They still had Beatle haircuts in ‘67?

  49. K.... S....

Love the British flag. They were from CHICAGO, lol...

  50. y.... ....

How cute is the bass player Nick? They're all adorable.

  51. R.... L....

    GROOVY!!!

  52. c.... R....

Did the guitar player even play his guitar I don’t hear any guitar playing guitar

  53. P.... A....

Did anyone point out, they are wearing make up??!!

  54. C.... M....

if they are not playing the ,music live they sure are doing a good job faking it .99% of the time u can tell the music is on tape

  55. f.... m....

great sounds buckinghams, great memories, Lahaina, '60s

  56. R.... Y....

England's Flag, those haircuts, suits. Reminds me of a group from Liverpool, England. Can't think of their name, wonder what ever happened to them?!?😂🤣😅😁😎

  57. w.... ....

OK, I love this group. Went to same HS and at same time a Carl, Lane Tech. Dennis ( and Nick and possibly John Poulos) went to our long-time rival HS - Schurz. Then went to Columbia College and studied photography and cinematography. Who was the stage producer for this video? Why is Dennis in the background area along with superb musician Marty Grebb? who's forced to act like a backup singer? Show him with keys or Sax ! This was a great song. This was a great band. This was a terrible video....sorry - Chicago Greek

    w.... ....

yes, we know it's a Joe Zawinul song. jazz great. never would have received the public airplay without a vocal version by the Buckinghams ! Just like Jobim and The Girl From Ipanema. Without Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto's version - it would not have had the popularity. And thus many ignorant pop music enthusiasts were sucked into the impossible vortex of jazz, fusion, and classy music

  58. R.... A....

Good video and good song! But I wish people posting videos would stop stretching videos to look wide screen when they're not! Everyone looks 75pounds overweight all the time! no insult to you intended.

  59. M.... C....

    Beautiful!..................

  60. C.... S....

Thanks for posting! Always loved this version even tho I love Joe Zawinal and Cannonball Adderly performing it also.! "Can't we all just get along?"

  61. R.... T....

    Hey Moe!

  62. N.... ....

I knew that drummer cuz he gave lessons to my drummer in 1970 when The Buckinghams broke up. He drove up from Boston on the weekends to an AFB in NH I lived on. Man that kid was so spoiled....son of an Air Force General!

  63. C.... R....

Bass player kinda looks like Wolowitz.

  64. m.... ....

That is some serious helmet hair

  65. Q.... S....

The bass player looks like the guy from The Big Bang Theory!!

  66. D.... ....

Funny how all these hipsters get so butthurt over this. Guess their 8 week Jazz apreciation course didn't teach them that great songs tend to be covered. I'm sure Joe Zawinul and Cannonball were SOO hurt by this cover. Please proceed to criticize Hendrix for daring to perform Watchtower or any of the other songs he covered from Dylan, Clapton or the Beatles. Guess that nullifies how great Jimi was... :P
Seriously, it's not even fashionable to be a hipster anymore. Stop it. Your kind is mocked across the universe.

    D.... ....

David...Let's be honest, Zawinul received a major financial windfall from this cover version.

    D.... ....

Not to mention all the times that jazz has covered pop songs or soundtracks.

    D.... ....

Why can't people have different tastes in fashion, you may not like it but other people like me enjoy that kind of chill hip clothing of the 60s. people just have different tastes in things, people are allowed to have opinions.

    D.... ....

Hendrix covering Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower'? Raise the alarm, that's cultural appropriation!

    D.... ....

    *you're lol

  67. r.... ....

Sure is better than that"'armor feather"?

  68. D.... ....

I'm puzzled by those who seem surprised by the pop adaptation of this song. It was a huge hit for these guys and I can actually remember hearing it on the radio at time. Jazz music has frequently seen covers of broadway musical, movie sound tracks or pop songs, sometimes turning them into jazz standards. I don't recall pop music fans complaining about it.

  69. G.... ....

If the original instrumental Adderley / Zawinul version wasn’t such a soulful classic and a milestone recording, this vocal rendition wouldn’t seem so lacking. Sorry, it has to be said. At least the original composer Zawinul made some royalty money off this pop version. Thanks for posting this version if only to expose the uninitiated to the composition and hopefully the original recording featuring Adderley and Zawinul.

    G.... ....

Thank you for your cool hipster opinion on what everybody is supposed to feel about this song

  70. R.... L....

Wow what a great old tune😀

  71. A.... M....

Why doesn't Marty have his keyboard here? I doubt it has anything to do with vocals, as they are portraying here.

  72. F.... B....

Americans trying to be British AHHHHHH

  73. M.... W....

Wait a minute!....Who wrote this song??

  74. a.... p....

    where are the horn players?

  75. J.... C....

I like the right handed Paul bass.

  76. R.... B....

    Terrible lip sync effort.

  77. S.... G....

Where bad Beatles copy bands and jazz collide!

  78. r.... s....

    I love you green,purple ,blue,red,black.and white ..but now I DON"T UNDERSTAND ? ALL THIS?..HATE DON"T COMMUTE?

  79. P.... S....

these guys make you love chicago w/o guns

  80. p.... ....

The only British guitar player who was better than Hendrix. Dig.

  81. r.... ....

uuhh...this is an American band, right?

    r.... ....

    that's right. Chicago area band.

    r.... ....

It's probably because they called themselves The Buckinghams, probably their manager's idea, that or their record company's, to make them seem like a British Invasion band.

    r.... ....

@chrisjaybecker , yeah, they definitely have the Beatles haircuts and are doing two-part harmonies.

  82. T.... R....

The Buckinghams are an American Sunshine pop band from Chicago, Illinois, United States. They formed in 1966.

  83. J.... J....

Good song, still sounds good and they were good too.

  84. B.... O....

i was only nine years old when this was released, but I really loved it and will never forget it.

  85. S.... A....

    Really good drummer !!!

  86. L.... M....

An USA group pretending to be an english group...Why?

    L.... M....

Because the British were producing the culture of the times. To be British was to be 'groooovy baby'.

  87. B.... L....

Like that some men song about women knocking their socks off! Big turn on.

    B.... L....

Parents my spelling. Every time I type sing about.
Until just know...spell check changed sing to song..,

    B.... L....

    Not parents...

    B.... L....

    Pardon!

  88. B.... L....

    Love it.

  89. S.... B....

    worst. haircut. ever.

  90. W.... M....

so fake!what's up with these fake union jack flags?lmao, the things producers were ready to do to cash in on the "british invasion"

  91. B.... C....

    Where are the horns?

  92. A.... R....

Is the singer on the left dennis tufano?

    A.... R....

    Yes indeed!

  93. p.... t....

very beautiful song, great music & memories of life, gold standard of excellence, one of the best bands of all time, absolutely phenomenal sound

  94. M.... R....

Another great song ive been looking for for years till now.and they.did other love songs really from. My younger years hot lyrics like it is.Michael.

  95. J.... J....

    man,  I love this one.

  96. L.... V....

Im surprised that this tune is originally from these guys & for years I thought this was created by Buddy Rich Big Band

  97. G.... H....

    They were from Chicago...1966

  98. G.... H....

Did these kats do that live? They're plugged and there are several flag draped columns in the background...amps? Pretty good mix for TV Live back in the 60's

    G.... H....

    It's the record. They're syncing.

  99. B.... ....

This guy put a bowl on his head for a haircut 1:15

  100. L.... ....

I heard this song as a teen done by The Buckinghams and then the version by Cannonball Adderly.  I am glad the pop version introduced me to the jazz version.
