Buck Owens - The House Down The Block Lyrics

The house my family lives in just down the block
Many times I passed there but I never stopped
I go on all alone a wishin' I could be
In that house down the block with my family.

When we meet upon the street I just bow my head
They don't know how often I wish that I was dead
To our name I brought the shame but still I long to be
In that house down the block with my family.

[Instrumental]

When Gabriel blows his trumpet and time will be no more
When mem'ries fade, my daddy's faith I'll walk up to the door
The tears that fall won't start at all and God will let me be
In that house down the block with my family...

Yup. This number sold me on pedal steel guitars and I bought one not long after hearing it. Went to see BO at Liverpool Empire (UK), but was disappointed that Tom Brumley, who I expected to be on steel, didn't come on the tour and his replacement was really quiet. Still enjoyed the concert.. Don't remember the exact year, but probably mid-late 60's. Thanks for the memory!

I don't know if anyone here is old enough to remember, Buck used to appear on TV every weekend on this show that I can't even remember the name of.

I was raised on Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, but there was always room for Buck Owens. Goddamn, but he was great. If he had just been a guitar player he would have been one of the greats.

mwbright It was the Buck Owens Ranch Show. It aired from 66 - 72. They are good shows and you can watch them here on YouTube.

I can't believe I'd forgotten. And what a great thing for 11 year old Rock & Rollers to be exposed to.

When I think of what we had going for us then, compared to the way it is now -- radio was completely integrated. An hour of radio would give you all the popular white groups, along with a lot of Motown. Then you'd have Buck Owens, and a lot more Country too filling out Friday and Saturday night television.

Now radio is completely segregated, more than the days of Jim Crow, and there are no music shows on television that I can think of. Ugh.

Baby, we lived on a dead end street, in a shack, that led to a horse pasture... Back in the late sixties...But we had Buck singing about it for us!

Tom Page;First, thanks for posting this video.  There are many reasons why it's great.  Listening to it,you hear Buck Owens/Bakersfield style come through.  The lyrics are emotional, with a poingant message.  At it's hear.it's a great "black sheep seeking redemption song."  Once again, thank you for posting this video.
