Buck Owens - Mental Cruelty Lyrics

Mental cruelty, that's what I heard her say
Mental cruelty to the judge that day
I sat there in silence so she could be free
And listened to her lying words mental cruelty.

Your Honor, since our marriage
My life's not been the same
Why, I'm missing out on all the fun
And he's the one to blame.

There's never any excitement now
The way there used to be
And sharing his way of life
Is mental cruelty, mental cruelty.

Divorce has been granted
For many different things
Even when there's not a reason
And when no one can be blamed.

With only two little words
Why she's on her merry way
Yes, all the woman has to claim
Is mental cruelty, mental cruelty...

I will add John Prine and Iris DeMent did a great cover of this song that appears on John Prine's 1st album featuring John and female country singers of today.

Why don't country artists sing and write these kind of songs any more? If it's good enough for the one and only Rose and the incomparable Buck Owens, then it's good enough for all!

Way back, before he became a weak singer on the Hee-Haw show,Buck was,IMHO,the best country performer at this time- he and Rose Maddox were at the heighth of their powers here. From 1969,with Don Rich on fiddle,Ralph Mooney on steel,George French Jr.on piano,Allen Williams on bass and Pee Wee Adams on drums. The whole band were as good as country music got.Buck was one of the co-writers on this.Bakersfield country at it's best.
