Buble, Michael - Mack The Knife Lyrics

Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has MacHeath, dear
And it keeps it way out of sight

When that shark bites with its teeth, dear
Scarlet billows begin to spread
Fancy gloves, though, wears our MacHeath, babe
So there's never, never, ever a trace of red

On a sidewalk, one Sunday morning
Lies a body oozin' life
Someone's sneakin' round that corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?

Oh there's a tugboat down, it's down by the river, don't you know?
Where the cement bag drooppin' on down
That cement is just—it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten old Macky's back in town

D'you hear 'bout Louie Miller?
He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
Now MacHeath spends, he spends like a sailor
Could that boy have done somethin' rash?

Ah, Jenny Diver, look out, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's, Macky's back in town

I said Jenny Diver, whoa, Sukey Tawdry
Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town

I said, look out, old Macky is back!

Buble, Michael Mack The Knife Comments
  1. M.... R....

Is this not the best song of all time? Considering it is almost 100 years old? (1928) and by the amount of 'superstars' that have covered it; Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong, Sammy Davis Jr, Bing Crosby and so many more!!!!!

  2. M.... D....

Too smooth - needs more bite. Darin's has that...

  3. E.... D....

No one should sing this but Bobby Darin. This sucks bad.

  4. J.... C....

    Mr. Buble can sing!!👍👏

  5. P.... D....

Dis guy messin up a Great Classic singin like a Pansy!! Sing like a Man!!! Notta Schoolgirl ya Mamalucc!!!

  6. T.... A....

Not bad. But my favorite version of this song is Ella Fitzgerald’s version—where she forgot the words and won a Grammy for her improvisation.

  7. Y.... G....

I so wish he had sung this in the same way as Bobby Darin 😭

    Y.... G....

why would he do that? He's NOT Bobby Darin!

  8. M.... ....

    This is awful.

    HILDEGARD KNEF
    IS NUMBER ONE
    THE BEST IN 2018
    THANKS GRAZIE MERCI

  10. A.... ....

LOL!!!!! Pretender to the throne. You will never be Bobby Darin.

  11. E.... J....

The gangsta rap of the jazz era . . . .

  12. N.... P....

    Frank Sinatra top!!!

  13. c.... ....

I did this parody of Gilligan's Island's lyrics to Mack the Knife's music - https://youtu.be/ZWGohEXgI-4

  14. G.... R....

I always resisted this golden boy but must admit ... this version is absolutely fabulous

  15. G.... ....

    💯💯💯

  16. G.... ....

    Gekke beat

  17. G.... ....

    Lekker nummertje

  18. G.... ....

I don’t think you have any other place in your mind or not just let us do down

  19. m.... ....

I enjoy many of Buble's recordings of classic songs, but this one doesn't cut it. There are many better renditions of Mack the Knife out there... Armstrong, Darin, Sinatra, Williams, even Dee Snider. This one is just a vocal train wreck.

  20. E.... F....

    wowowowowoo

  21. c.... ....

It lacks the up beat and jaunty feel of the original.

    c.... ....

well considering its a murder ballad i dunno if it was ever meant to be jaunty

  22. T.... P....

    The moon sang it better.

  23. J.... C....

    the bass player kicks arse!

  24. M.... ....

Some things are best left in the past!

  25. t.... ....

just not that good, kevin spacey does it much better, and of course, bobby d owwns it.

    t.... ....

Bobbys version is great but the song wasn't his

  26. s.... f....

He doesn't swing with the band. Guarantee he overdubbed vs. recording the same time as the band.

  27. b.... ....

I have only one thing to say-check out Dinah Shore and Pearl Bailey's version! That's how this song should sound!

  28. R.... D....

After listening to the original German version then Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong, and my main man Frank Sinatra, I can honestly say it's a notch above the Threepenny opera by Kurt Weill Bertholt Brech. I'm covering this song in the style of Sinatra myself, but with the swing of Armstrong. Today the song requires feeling, but Michael phrased it across the rhythm clashing with the 'swing feel' where the emphasis is on the off–beat or weaker pulse in the music. Michael should have improvise on the melody over the arrangement to give it a more danceable swing style, but perhaps he wanted it to go in another direction. When you cover someone else song I just believe you shouldn't try and re-invent the wheel, that's why it's a cover.

  29. E.... ....

    Where's Bobby ? This sucks

  30. J.... G....

Sorry to say it doesn't compare to Bobby Darrin.

  31. L.... W....

This is fine, but nothing can top Bobby Darin and Robbie William's versions.

    L.... W....

Lone Wanderer .Buble is much better than Darin

  32. m.... ....

i like it, people in the comments needs to get a life

  33. S.... V....

Look up Moritat von Mackie Messer. That is the original (in German though). And that's the way Brecht and Weil wanted it to sound, since it was supposed to support brechts style of theater plays.

  34. S.... V....

This is not supposed to be jazz. Poor Kurt Weil and Bertholt Brecht.

  35. F.... G....

This is just a tasteless interpretation. It lacks the soul that Mackie Messer and the Armstrong and Darin versions have

  36. R.... ....

Geez. The more you listen and read the lyrics closely you learn that this sound is about a hit-man who murders people. Yikes!

    R.... ....

Yeah its from the three penny opera

    R.... ....

The Hudson River hides many secrets.

  37. I.... A....

this version feels wrong, it's too robotic, no true emotions

    I.... A....

    Absolutely.

  38. s.... ....

    patrick chan anyone

    s.... ....

    hahah yeeppp

  39. D.... P....

buenisima version.como todo lo que hace michael.

  41. M.... J....

    muy buenooooooo

  42. z.... c....

De ayer hoy y siempre inolvidable!!

  43. N.... M....

I am one of those people who disliked this song, and ill explain myself. I disliked it because i feel like his rendition of the song looses its magic. the original gives you a particulate feeling which is practically the main reason anyone listens to it.

    N.... M....

And i just came here to listen to his cover.

    N.... M....

its kind of like a nostalgia thing even tho i just started listening to it. that's the magic in music

  44. s.... r....

the music is better than the singing . this time .

  45. M.... D....

A touch of Mark Murphy styling here suits Mr. Bubblé.

  46. D.... D....

Frank Sinatra The Lady is a tramp karokae

  47. J.... E....

    "macHeath"? Seriously?

    J.... E....

Yep, goes all the way back to Brecht's original German lyrics in 1928:

Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne
und die trägt er im Gesicht
und Macheath, der hat ein Messer
doch das Messer sieht man nicht.

    J.... E....

    Seriously what?

  48. R.... ....

I like the original Louis Armstrong and then the Bobby Darin versions best but Mike Buble's version is pretty good too. Remember folks Mr. Buble has every right to do his own interpretation of this classic as has all others before him.

    R.... ....

@Bort Simpson Yes, the music is by Kurt Weill and the lirics by Bertold Brecht. Berlin, 1928.

    R.... ....

@José Pedro Orejano yeah, i dont know why i didn`t mention brecht (im german, so double embarassing) thanks for adding <3

  49. G.... C....

    Terrible you suck bubble 😓😕😔

    G.... C....

    George Clooney. No, you do.

  54. K.... R....

    K.... R....

+Katie Rose Wells Yeah, you would.

    K.... R....

@Jade Enigma I'm sure anyone would.

  55. B.... S....

    that's version sucks

  56. J.... C....

    pretty bad

    J.... C....

    really? Ya' think so?

    J.... C....

    yep haha

  57. L.... ....

Like wow! Big fan, little smarts. What album is this on? When was it recorded?

It is customary to provide decent information. Leaving this task up to your viewers is a huge mistake in showmanship, and your coming in pretty close to last when you don't provide some info. Only stupid people don't want to know.

  58. M.... C....

    killed it

  59. D.... T....

A very very good version I love you Michael!!!!!!!!   Other than the before

  60. D.... F....

I like Michael a lot,  but this is why he does not touch Darin's playlist.

    D.... F....

If you like the Bobby Darin one, try the Frank Sinatra/Jimmy Buffet cover off his Duets album. #excellent

  61. D.... G....

    Buble want to sleep!

  62. A.... T....

He is good when it comes to singing sanatra

  63. E.... S....

Have this on Michael Buble album…… of all the versions done of this song the original Bobby Darin version is by far THE TOPS…… Bobby shook it up some, recorded it, the rest is history……. so there you have it.

  64. S.... ....

I like Michael's version better its more jazzy and there more energy when he sings. Ill listen to bobby darin if i wanna go to sleep...

    S.... ....

Have you ever even heard Bobby 's version?!?! it's so energetic and amazing! Michael did a great job but his version is so downbeat and slow, not the right lyrics either...But if that's your opinion...

    S.... ....

+Chloe Bell Strictly speaking, the "right lyrics" go like this:

Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne
und die trägt er im Gesicht
und Macheath, der hat ein Messer
doch das Messer sieht man nicht.

Ach, es sind des Haifischs Flossen
    rot, wenn dieser Blut vergießt.
    Mackie Messer trägt 'nen Handschuh
    drauf man keine Untat liest.

    An 'nem schönen blauen Sonntag
liegt ein toter Mann am Strand
und ein Mensch geht um die Ecke
    den man Mackie Messer nennt.

    Und Schmul Meier bleibt verschwunden
    und so mancher reiche Mann
und sein Geld hat Mackie Messer
    dem man nichts beweisen kann.

    Jenny Towler ward gefunden
mit 'nem Messer in der Brust
und am Kai geht Mackie Messer
    der von allem nichts gewußt.

Und das große Feuer in Soho
sieben Kinder und ein Greis -
in der Menge Mackie Messer, den
man nicht fragt und der nichts weiss.

    Und die minderjährige Witwe
    deren Namen jeder weiss
wachte auf und war geschändet -
    Mackie, welches war dein Preis?
Wachte auf und war geschändet -
    Mackie, welches war dein Preis?

    (Bertholt Brecht, 1928)

  65. I.... A....

Who knew that a song about a serial killer would do so well...get me lyrics on jack the ripper, the zodiac, and...vlad the impaler, stat!

  66. D.... C....

E' quasi ben interpretata, come quella cantata dalla mai dimenticata Hildgard Kneff, stessa cadenza ritmica, anche se quella di Hildegard è più sofisticata e coinvolgente.

  67. D.... ....

I love Robbie Williams version, so upbeat and big bandy

  68. M.... j....

Almost as close as we get, certainly. Robbie Williams does a great job with these classics as well though, and I prefer his Mack the Knife for sure.

  69. J.... G....

1:52, if you think that's not pure talent, you are not a very nice person :D

  70. J.... G....

I like this version the best. DId you know MB covered this song 3 different times!? Once on his independent "BaBalu" album, once on his live recording on "Come Fly With Me" and his newest version (this one) that can be found on the "Collection" album on itunes, and on the "Fan Club" Version of "It's Time", and on the special edition as well. Something tells me he likes this song. LOL. :D

  71. M.... M....

Love his voice, but I prefer Bobby Darin's version better :)

  72. O.... ....

Michael Bubel is the new Frank Sinatra won't replace Sinatra by a long time but our generations Sinatra.

  73. J.... G....

How many times is he gonna cover this tune? "BaBalu" "Come Fly With Me" "Special Delivery"

  74. d.... ....

he killed this song..can he hit any high notes...sheesh..

  75. g.... ....

Check out Burton Cummings' version of this song.

  76. T.... V....

lyrics are correct, he sang it wrong. Bobby Darin aced this song

  77. I.... c....

Muy bien. Me gustó. No está mal. Me sorprendió gratamente. Voy a investigar su disco grafía.

  78. L.... V....

    You are right

  79. S.... C....

    You're kidding right?

  80. b.... ....

    Are you on crack ?????

  81. L.... V....

Let's be honest, if Michael Buble was around the time of the rat pack and Bobby Darin, he would of not made it. I prefer Frank Sinatra, but personally think Bobby Darin did a better job than Frank on this song and Michael just killed it

  82. J.... C....

Wow this has so many wrong lyrics i cant even begin to describe!

    J.... C....

"Wrong lyrics"? You need to get an education. This is one of greatest lyrics of the 20th century. Go back to your r n b or whatever rubbish you listen to..

  83. t.... ....

Oh granted.. Bobby Darin's version of Mack the Knife is just stunning.. I'm comparing Buble and Sinatra in general.. Both artists are awesome. I'm just saying Frankie's better in my opinion

  84. J.... E....

The lyrics are a bit dodgy, but the audio is great

    J.... E....

    Its a translation from German

  85. t.... ....

Awesome! Sinatra is still the best though. ;)

  86. S.... ....

love this song so much :D

  87. E.... H....

    wow.that was aweful.

  88. B.... D....

Look out old Mikey is back! (as in Michael Buble)

  89. A.... ....

    I think he's a gangster

  90. J.... v....

    amezziiiiiiiing

  91. G.... A....

    Michael Bubel rocks!!

  92. d.... ....

    ahh I love this song ! thanks for posting ! :D <3
