Bryan Ferry - Song To The Siren Lyrics

Long afloat on distant oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle

And you sang
Sail to me, sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Did I dream? You dreamed about me
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish heart is leaning
Broken, lovelorn, on your rocks

For you sing, touch me not
Touch me not, come back tomorrow
Oh, my heart, oh, my heart
Shies from the sorrow

Here I am, here I am

I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am riddled at the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with death, my bride?

Hear me sing
Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Here I am, here I am

I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am riddled at the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with death, my bride?

Hear me sing
Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) & John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) are so subtly layered here.

always been a fan of a fellow geordie.should have been put on boys and girls or perhaps avalon

  13. T.... P....

if u read the sleeve of the album, you will understand why this sounds so otherwordly,5-9 top knotch guitar players, and many many more one of a kind musicians that specialize on a specific way of playing are collaborating on this album.they contribute to a musical phrase here and there that could be played by only one!!!but the genius(an ofcourse the money he spends)Mr ferry have every each of them playing and using them as a maestro!!!on there strong point, and sucking there music exellence on the best way possible!!!
what i mean by that,he uses nile rodgers that is known for his steady funky rhythm playing, david gilmour for his melodic one note filler solos and so on ,flea is playing only the slap base parts, marcus miller that jazzy walking base parts etc etc the best attributes from everyone make this album sound so magical!!!and all that because of Mr Brian Ferry...what a masterpiece

  14. T.... R....

    Simply Beautiful...❤️👍👌

  15. G.... R....

There is no one as romantic and atmospheric as Bryan Ferry. He is the King of Cool.

    G.... R....

    King of Kool..!!

  16. D.... E....

Like This Mortal Coil version with Liz Frazier. But Brian is the king of covers. Beautiful.

  17. H.... ....

welcome to the genius that is Brain Ferry.......sometimes words fail me....not on this occasion obviously
    :-)

  18. H.... P....

Lush production nearly drowns the tune

    H.... P....

Everything Bryan does is Lush. If you want Lo-Fi or rawness from Bryan, you're asking for too much.

For about fifteen seconds, I though he might, just have got this right. Then, as it turned out, the lazy Geordie git had made this astonishing song sound like everything else he'd ever recorded in the dwindling two decades of his career, which seem to have involved wrecking other people's songs in the service of aging housewives. Sorry Brian. But true.

  30. V.... ....

Not as good as John Frusciante but way better than George Michael!

  31. o.... 1....

the roxy cover from the album siren 1975 with jerry hall would fit better!

  32. M.... N....

This sounds like Robert Plant's version. Wot the bloody hell's going on?

  33. P.... P....

This is my favorite song ever,This Mortal coil, Cocteau twins are my favorite singers, but Brain Ferry gave it this Roxy music funk,it's awesome!

    P.... P....

Pasha Pasovski i agree with you mate.

    P.... P....

Oh no , this is terrible!
Tim Buckley's original is best by far , then there is This Mortal Coil's version. It seems that every different cover changes the lyrics slightly.

  34. J.... S....

    Que mulher estonteante de bela!!!

  35. J.... D....

I'd like to write songs for him. I get to go to his next concert... Ohh yaah!!

  36. X.... G....

    this sucks..empty version..total crap

    X.... G....

    Works flawless here.

    X.... G....

    Opinions are like...well, you know...*

    X.... G....

Why did you even waste your time?

    X.... G....

X Girl, get out here bitch!

  37. B.... H....

Not a fan of his lilting faux vibrato, a method used by singers when they're incapable of holding a note. Sounds like he's singing while driving down a particularly bumpy road.

    B.... H....

he sings like that since the early days, and you notice it now? :p

  38. K.... H....

My favorite Tim Buckley song!  Great Cover!

  39. A.... G....

    great tune!!

  40. T.... B....

Love this. So much amazing music from this man. I am forever grateful.

    T.... B....

Tara Balke-Krukar hallo, Tara, i agree with you. Cheers from Chile.

  41. M.... F....

    un temazo !

  42. B.... G....

superbe belle aussi par robert plant

  43. P.... L....

    Fantastic Romantik Pop song ,💖

  44. V.... S....

Just an observation: the original lyrics by Tim Buckley says "shipless ocean" Bryan sings "distant oceans", with all respect to sir Bryan I prefer poetically the original.

    V.... S....

Valentino Soramae How could anyone be there if it was a 'shipless Ocean' distant is more apt

    V.... S....

sirens do not need ships to be there

    V.... S....

Skipping over the ocean like a scone.

    V.... S....

Mark Murphy, noone is there, because there are no ships left.

    V.... S....

mark murphy shipless emphasizes the expanse of lonely emptiness .

    Do you need help?

Lyrics are important, it's half of the song
    .
There is no reason to be a rude, condescending jerk; apparently you need help in the interpersonal skills department & lots of it.
Wishing you the best, good luck! 💜

    7.... ....

+7thWardCreole I'm sorry you misunderstood me, I didn't mean to be rude..

    7.... ....

+Myriam VronskyJoachim Sorry for completely misinterpreting that!

    +7thWardCreole It's okay. I hope you're fine. ♡♡♡

    The Siren

Around those rocks there ,she's been heard,
despite how loud the seaside seems.
    Legend tells that she stays on the rocks;
others claim she is a sailor's dream.
Some tell of how they have seen
    her;
a sea maiden of beauty uncompared
She is one of the water home,
with a mass of golden hair.
She sings on the rocks with a melody,
    of a hauntingly mesmerizing tune.
There are warnings to go back from those rocks
or a demise may occur soon.
    Documentation shows
of the souls who did not heed.
    Each mysteriously lost;
    thus, the legend does feed.
    From a distance, she captivates;
both the doubters and those who believe.
Perhaps this section of rocky coast
may have its own siren by the sea.

"This Mortal Coil" and Bryan Ferry's versions are Magnificent...Please give a listen to "This Mortal Coil's" take-from the movie "The Lovely Bones" it is more haunting (if possible)

  54. F.... C....

It's by far my favorite version of this song... nothing better to calm down and reflect while listening to

    F.... C....

+Frank Collins  I agree 100 percent frank. I find myself doing the same thing.

    F.... C....

+Frank Collins 'Know that's what this will become. But now, on first listen, my heart rate is elevated 20 bpm and hair is on end. Epic track.

    F.... C....

this is good but i prefer john frusciantes version.

    F.... C....

John frusciantes version is great but Elizabeth Frasers version is haunting.

    F.... C....

love roxy but limp vs buckley or tmc

I know what you mean, John. One of my very favorite songs. Many covers - all good, some great. Lot's of fun finding new or previously unheard versions. A great song, and I believe this is one of the best ever composed, is open to limitless interpretations. Like the best of Classical, this will be played by musicians hundreds of years from now.

  71. S.... S....

    Can't lose with BF!

  72. D.... O....

    excellent

  73. x.... ....

Agreed =) It's a very fine album indeed. It's great to see Bryan writing some of his own material again too, I know he struggles with that and doesn't enjoy song writing but I think "Reason or Rhyme" is a masterpiece. His voice has changed with age and maybe his vocal range is reduced, but in other ways its changed for the better I think..

  74. x.... ....

thanks for sharing your unusual story, you write very elegantly :) it's interesting how people discover, or are drawn to songs...and how songs and music can have such a powerful effect on memory and the human psyche.. I too, am very much like yourself..remote, preferring to avoid relationships and emotional intimacy..

  75. T.... C....

This just takes you to some other place, gorgeous tune.

  76. B.... B....

    fantastic

  77. P.... ....

Great cover! I also love "Tender is the Night" "Shameless" "You Can Dance" and "Reason and Rhyme"
