Bruce Springsteen - Two Faces Lyrics
I met a girl and we ran away
I swore I'd make her happy every day
And how I made her cry
Two faces have I
Lord I love to see my baby smile
Then dark clouds come rolling by
Two faces have I
One that laughs one that cries
One says hello one says goodbye
One does things I don't understand
Makes me feel like half a man
At night I get down on my knees and pray
But he'll never say goodbye
Two faces have I
Last night as I kissed you 'neath the willow tree
He swore he'd take your love away from me
He said our life was just a lie
And two faces have I
Well go ahead and let him try

Bruce Springsteen Two Faces Comments
Bruce plays all instruments on this. That organ solo is amazing.
This tune is the truth for most men, you try hard to be good.
the tender hearted boss 💕 It is only on these Bruce videos where I don’t see a lot of rude comments. Thank god ~ some places are free from that
Yes this song helps to make the Tunnel of Love album hard-to-shut-off masterpeice.
Bruce is God
favorite album from Bruce. this song still hits me.
D, if I confess to you my favourite songs, music, you're close
D, got to send the son off. Please understand
D, there is no need to sing about superstars only
D, he hasn't or hadn't lost touch with the common man, that's his greatness
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums......the Boss at his best.....
...Well go ahead and let him try...
i still own this on cassette and my player still works.
being a Gemini the sign of twin i might have such a duality as well but it might not relate.
What an amazing song. Heard it years ago but only listening to it again now do I understand the lyrics much more. It's like a tale of schizophrenia.
D, sometimes I think the harmonica is the instrument, it understands the longing heart, ask Springsteen!
Epic....
Tunnel of Love is, IMO, Bruce's most underrated album and this song, especially, being one of his best...
I came here because I understood this song then when it first came out in 1987. I was 21. I turned 50 two weeks ago. I'm in a relationship where I've been verbally abusive. My girlfriend threatens to leave me. I mellow out and then a few weeks later do it again
I've NEVER met a more beautiful intelligent woman in my life. I love her madly. But the minute she says or does anything i feel is attacking or critical of me in anyway? I'll chew her a new asshole for the next two days aolid via private texts. She'll get upset, won't talk for a few days. Then it's over until the next time, usually every couple weeks. I know I should probably get professional help. But I dunno....?.....
Anyways, pray for me and Laura....thx
great song
Bruce is the man
Brilliant!
Jesus..1987. My aunt bought this for myself and my brother Christmas 1988. I was 16 years old. where are the years going to. Please slow down. The album was fab. Resonates even more today.
adrian myers
that album is the best one ever made !!
and the express tour was the greatest ever as well
That keyboard solo
This is such an underrated song. One of his best easily.
Donal O'Brien absolutely.
I agree it's a great song and a great album one of Springsteen's very best!
Top 60 maybe, but very good song!
love keyboard solo
My dad always plays this album when he gets really drunk, and I used to hate it so much in high school. He'd play this song over and over again while he swayed next to the cd player. I thought it was so annoying. I didn't understand back then, and it wasn't til I left home for college when I realized why he does that. Now I love this song and this whole album.
Danny...Evanwebble...I'm the same guy, same as your dad....not making comparison, but grew up in the 1970's, time of great passion, great disappointment, and bitterness. Became a heavy drinker at age 15...I'm 58 now. Been married 3 times. My apologies for anything, eveything you've suffered.
Never met my dad, he never wanted to meet me. I started to listen to Bruce when I was 11, in 1984, when Born in the USA came out. I'm 44 now. Listening to his songs made me the man I am today and I'm glad I learnt what life is all about thanks to him. I think it helped me much more than anything (and any shrink:) and he's probably the most important man in my life.
I was that drunk guy... i get it.
I sit out in my truck and listen to this song over and over...drinking of course....find peace son and forgive your dad.
Difficult time in his life when he released this album. To me it's his best album. Resonates as going through bitter sweet divorce..
i love this song and whole of Boss albums.
This song has haunted me for over 20 years. After 2 failed marriages, I realized that I let the good ones get away, or should I say I chased them away?
I've ruined so many great relationships I can't remember them all...I 'm sure I sabotaged them myself...
beautiful song ,unique,amazing album..
I love this shit.
+Tony Armijo You love shit?
But what does it mean ? Tunnel of Love album messes with my mind, always has. Brilliant disguise is another song I love but don't understand.
@Lisa B He's in love with this girl but another part of him does mean things that strains the relationship. At least that's what I gathered from it.
A song is what you want it to be.. I find bits and pieces of my life in every song I listen to!
The greatest challenge we will ever face is the battle with ourselves. Two faces is about the two persons within us. The black dog and the white dog. One face is our desire to belong, to be intimate, to be loved. The other face is the inner critic. The part that wants to sabotage when good things happen or when we meet someone wants to love us and be intimate. It's not really the other person. The battle is with ourselves. Sometimes we fear intimacy due to low self esteem or low self worth. We sometimes do things to sabotage ourselves and have no idea why. Ultimately we are afraid of ourselves and our emotions.
Possibly one of the most UNDER rated albums ever
You are totally correct.
@Clint Rockfist Simple and true.
Not underrated by me. It's my favourite of his.
Just love Danny's work on this!
The story of my life. Two faces have I but then again I am a Gemini in astrologic calender
One of my favorite Bruce songs. When my ex broke up with me the first time, I listened to this song over and over and over. Because I lied, and I made her cry...but at the same time I loved her.
many people have more than two faces
i always thought the end of this song (instrumental) sounded like circus music- lmao; a light-hearted approach to an otherwise grim song.
Yeah, I guess that happy Farfisa organ solo kind of makes fun of the rest of a down-beat mood. Nice juxtaposition.
I think it has more to with the era that inspired the song: the early 60s. Some of the lyrics are taken from Lou Christie's 'Two Faces Have I' and the organ harks back to another legendary breakup song, Del Shannon's 'Runaway'. It think it's actually quite poignant.
+Chris M Chris, I'm not very musically inclined. Can you please explain?
@Data Maestro Farfisa organs produce a weak, almost squealing sound mostly associated with happy pop songs (think "96 Tears" or "Wooly-Bully"); to hear it on such a sober, sad song grabs your attention. It's like a beautiful, sunny day after you receive some really bad news, or a funeral dirge played with a banjo. It's out of place.
+Chris M Thanks Chris, I'm getting it. I'm enjoying going through your playlists and likes. Your musical taste is very broad and diverse, similar to mine. No Motown? I'm about 10 year older than you which might explain it.
You'd like the other face to say goodbye? My fitting Springsteen song lately was 'Brilliant Disguise'.
Fitting title for my life right now
One does things I dont understand, makes me feel like half a man
My favorite Bruce album.
the truth...
solo on keyboard is the best ' piano' solo I have ever heard!
"The tender hearted Boss" is right!
best song off the album,
This song pays respect to Lou Christie's "Two Faces Have I" with the title and the line "...one that laughs, one that cries." A direct cover would've been interesting, though. :)
This album is overlooked
@musicalidea: You are talking about a different song altogether.
I prefer Bruce's version by a long shot atleast.
meine zeit ...
i did and i did, my life in a song
He looks like Sonny Crocket in this pic!! LOL
Always liked this simple tune. The tender hearted Boss.
Great song.
amazing song!!
