Bruce Springsteen - The New Timer Lyrics

He rode the rails since the Great Depression
Fifty years out on the skids
He said "You don't cross nobody
You'll be all right out here kid."

Left my family in Pennsylvania
Searchin' for work I hit the road
I met Frank in East Texas
In a freight yard blown through with snow
From New Mexico to Colorado
California to the sea
Frank he showed me the ropes sir
Just till I could get back on my feet

I hoed sugar beets outside of Firebaugh
I picked the peaches from the Marysville trees
They bunked us in a barn just like animals
Me and a hundred others just like me

We split up come the springtime
I never seen Frank again
'Cept one rainy night he blew by me on a grainer
Shouted my name and disappeared in the rain and wind

They found him shot dead outside of Stockton
His body lyin' on a muddy hill
Nothin' taken nothin' stolen
Somebody killin' just to kill

Late that summer I was rollin' through the plains of Texas
A vision passed before my eyes
A small house sittin' trackside
With the glow of the savior's beautiful light
A woman stood cookin' in the kitchen
Kid sat at a table with his old man
Now I wonder does my son miss me
Does he wonder where I am

Tonight I pick my campsite carefully
Outside the Sacramento yard
Gather some wood and light a fire
In the early winter dark

Wind whistling cold I pull my coat around me
Heat some coffee and stare out into the black night
I lie awake I lie awake sir
With my machete by my side

My Jesus your gracious love and mercy
Tonight I'm sorry could not fill my heart
Like one good rifle
And the name of who I ought to kill

joe buffalo wow I'll never regret playing guitar I'm old guy so best advice is practice practice practice for now. And drag some friends into it And. Yep it's positive and its learning Your reacting to a very good sad ballad Very good Ughm Great musicians Right here

@Brian Kelly OK ....Cool ! Thanks for not laughing at me as I thought you might. ..I really do got the ukulele. ....and the feelings ... and I love a lot a lot of bruce's songs ...." tougher than the rest " is almost my marching song ...it's my comfort and my shield and I love his lyrics. I love " you learn to live with what you can't rise above " and the whole Tom Joad album and wild billy's circus story and the one where he says " she called down " hey little heros summer's warm but I guess it ain't very sweet around here any more " and " one soft infested summer me and Terry became friends trying to breathe the fire we was born in " ....I could go on forever. I really do think he's a poet and a very sensitive man and ...maybe I shouldn't actually mention it cuz you could say " well what's that got to do with anything but I want to mention it anyway so I'm actually gay and I don't know if Bruce got a lot of gay fans but he really should cuz his writing is so sensitive and romantic and I think he also wrote jersey girl correct me if I'm wrong so ( don't laugh) I got this little fantasy where I think ( sorry patti ) " wish you was in love with a jersey girl Bruce. Wish I was the jersey girl you was in love with " And that's all. I admire you for playing music and I aspire to maybe doing it but .....I don't know. I love listening though and I write a few lyrics and I'm gushing on a bit so I'll stop. Thanks for your advice . I think it's good advice.

joe buffalo yeah Well I'm straight guy and very sensitive and this world can beat ya down so chin up and play the heck outta that uke Here's a few more Ughm deep or thoughtful talented musicians Some heart and soul. Ugh. Jackson Browne. Bob Dylan Check out Allison Krause Emmylou harris. Now for certain check some Mandolin Players You may do well one day with these choices As an instrument. Very thoughtful and emotive Mandolin and Lap slide Country folk western stalwarts Oh harmonica too But your the instrument. Take a hand at writing all of it down . Then compose as song ,as story . All instruments have notes and chords. Gotta learn them . Then , sky's the limit Lotta info there. But we're on the " song writer performer that's gotta be top 3easily Study Springsteen This song is great

@Brian Kelly OK. I will ! Really . I already love Emmylou. Her version of " tougher than the rest " is my favorite so ..... thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Appreciated.

@Brian Kelly saddest most beautiful moment for me of this song ? " we split up come the springtime / I never seen frank again / cept one night he blew by on a grainer / shouted my name / and disappeared in the rain and wind ..... "

That's how I am . I'm a fool . I'm a romantic little fool. How else am I gonna get through the day ?

This song had to have been originally written for Nebraska. Does anyone know when he wrote it?

    G.... M....

1995. He drew inspiration from the 1985 book Journey to nowhere: The saga of the new underclass. Nebraska was, as you probably know, released in 1982.
