Bruce Springsteen - Jack Of All Trades Lyrics

I’ll mow your lawn, clean the leaves out’ your drain
I’ll mend your roof, to keep out the rain
I take the work that God provides
I’m a jack of all trades, honey we’ll be all right

I’ll hammer the nails, I’ll set the stone
I’ll harvest your crops, when they’re ripe and grown
I’ll pull that engine apart, and patch’er up ’til she’s running right
I’m a jack of all trades, we’ll be all right

The hurricane blows, brings the hard rain
When the blue sky breaks
It feels like the world’s gonna change
And we’ll start caring for each other
Like Jesus said that we might
I’m a jack of all trades, we’ll be all right

The banker man grows fat, working man grows thin
It’s all happened before and it’ll happen again
It’ll happen again, yeah they’ll bet your life
I’m a jack of all trades, darling we’ll be all right

Now sometimes tomorrow comes soaked in treasure and blood
We stood the drought, now we’ll stand the flood
There’s a new world coming, I can see the light
I’m a jack of all trades, we’ll be all right

So you use what you’ve got and you learn to make do
You take the old, you make it new
If I had me a gun, I’d find the bastards and shoot ’em on sight
I’m a jack of all trades, we’ll be all right
I’m a jack of all trades, we’ll be all right

For all the men who wake up at 6 am and work hard all day for their family....never to get ahead.... but they know no other way....and they never complain.

  2. 1.... 4....

Springsteen in song never forgot about simple.... good and crisis...no matter how far he went he never forgot the hard crap

  3. L.... ....

This is a beautiful song that turns pretty dark at the end. He would consider murder to protect his family.

  4. J.... O....

    This hit close to home.

  5. G.... E....

Anthemic Americana with just a hint of northern English brass bands - irresistible!

  6. B.... M....

    Love you Bruce

  7. J.... M....

    Amazing voice. Immortal artist.

  8. P.... ....

Anybody else like this for their funeral procession?

  9. M.... W....

A workingman's song straight from the heart. 'We'll start caring for each other/ like Jesus said that we might'. A glimpse of a better world.

I keep coming back to hear you and et al. Love and joy to you and your beautiful family .

  11. G.... P....

Not a better story teller in music than Bruce. Many of them are about his life.

  12. A.... ....

Only problem is, you can’t put all this down on a resume because nobody’s going to believe you.

  13. D.... R....

He's a great writer, he has his hand on the pulse of America. His songs are beautiful and poignant at the same time. He shows there's still hope for everyone who's sad and suffering. He can pick your spirits up with a rousing song.

    D.... R....

    wonderful text

  14. M.... W....

No wonder Bruce Springsteen is called the singer of blue collar America. A brilliant authentic song of a versatile worker.

  15. G.... G....

I kicked habits and i quit to drink but some old habits are hard to broke like love to Bruce ❤

"... What force leads a man
To a life filled with danger
High on seas or a mile underground?
It's when need is his master
    And poverty's no stranger
And there's no other work to be found..."

I immediately think of post Vietnam when the guys and the gals took care of one another. We need to never forget this. Never.

  22. S.... J....

Another masterpiece from the voice of the blue collared (wo)man. From a young age I followed Bruce's career in real time. As I have grown older though; his music seems to have found a new appreciation from myself.

It almost seems like a dying breed; the self sufficient, knowledgeable person who can take something archaic and find a way to prolong it's use. It's kind of a shame to see how tasks and/or repairs have become so disposable or inconvenient to take on.

My wife and I have had our fair share of struggles starting out as a young couple; and with four kids we still fond ourselves at times painted into a corner. Alas; I am forever grateful for my Dad and Father-in-law for instilling the life lessons and ability to be a good Jack-of-all-trades for my family.

This is yet another example of great songwriting and storytelling (apparently another dying breed in music). The world can continue to change; I am respectfully going to hunker down s bit longer and keep my heels dug in.

    Thanks Bruce

I have been married to my jack of all trades for 26 years and this song sums him up perfectly. No matter what happens he gets us through it. A beautiful song that makes me think of my beautiful man Bruce Springsteen is a musical genius and a poet and his music has been a

    Big part of my life.

  28. T.... B....

I'll just keep saying this until someone agrees. He is a poet laureate and music incorporeal. I've destroyed my house looking for t-shirt "I only answer to one Boss"

  39. B.... K....

I thought this song would start "I used to work in Chicago..."

  40. P.... V....

I believe the song is about the hardship caused by the 2008 GFC. by the greed of the financial system and those who ran it. Loss of working class jobs and the fat cats dont care. If i had a gun Id shoot them all down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    P.... V....

"If..." was a really tough comment. I believe he meant it to shock. And his mention was honest.

  41. J.... M....

If only the jack of all trades had the ability to make real change(justice-love rein) in the world.

  42. t.... ....

    Wonderfuuuuul....

  43. K.... R....

When I hear of this song, I think of my father. He was a working man, and in 1972, he lost his job, and about a year passed before he found steady work. I remember my Dad as being very quiet during those scary months. He must have been very worried about how he was going to provide for his family. I did not really understand then how hard it must have been for him. I do now.

    K.... R....

You had an awesome father, it is hard to provide for your kids sometimes, only a dad can know

    K.... R....

    Thank you.

SatanicCommunist I don’t believe anything a satanic communist says is great to be truly great. In fact, nothing great comes from satanism and communism. So why don’t you buzz off to your long bread line and watch as nationalism and Christianity are revitalized. France, the last hope of globalism, is in turmoil—you’re losing buddy. Jesus will win and the horrors of Satan and communism will be vanquished. A day will come when scum like yourself won’t be able to get high off the abortions of babies and other evils perpetrated by cultural Marxism.

  60. A.... M....

REALMENTE O QUE POSSO MAIS FALAR DESTAS MARAVILHAS ????????????????????????

  61. j.... b....

Bruce, I saw u for free in central park in 1974  and I love your music and songs but stay away from the socialistas dude  I don t get what makes a successful man think the socialists are on ur side. The business men of Hitler went along with his new world order but they were wrong. I'd like for Bruce to answer this one.

    j.... b....

Godwin's law decided to show up pretty early

    j.... b....

If you are a socialist you are just on the peoples side. Those who really keep the world turning. Remember  his not a communist, there is a big difference. He sings about love, faith and hope, I dont think you really know his lyrics. AND I am probably his biggest fan. Peace in our time

    j.... b....

Can't miss the irony: A guy who went to a free concert is complaining about socialists.....hahaha. Blower, send the Boss the $10 you owe him, but also factor in inflation and interest.

    j.... b....

Like he would trade his principles for your short sighted views of socialism.

    j.... b....

    Marx was the good guy...

  62. L.... M....

The intro of the song reminds me of another song. Can't remember which one tho, does anyone know?

    L.... M....

The piano slightly resembles the intro to Carry On by Fun. That's all I got.

    L.... M....

Lianne M maybe Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.? There are dozens of songs with that pattern.

    L.... M....

    "My Way" by Frank Sinatra?

  63. B.... H....

money is cool most of the time it isn't a issue it makes somethings a lot easy in life. but money doesn't solve like longer life immortality- stop people from passing away- it doesn't solve- your achievements goals plans- DNA genetics- doesnt stop limits on life even if you got money sometimes it to late.

  64. B.... H....

meaning you keep it because you cant buy it again. limited time offer that money cant buy back and accept that what is now to buy. you want to buy back some of the things in the past- for the money but you have to live in 2014 2015 or 2016 in future buying or present buying you can't buy that pioneer Dvd Recorder dvr-745 h model 2006- 2007 edition dvd recorder- that business mite of phased out and you have to buy what you buy now and have to learn to like it even if you have example $15 million dollars you still buy cheap foods coz you cant buy bigger for better value of money.

  65. B.... H....

less collecting when you get money- meaning- if you have money you spend it meaning- you collect things thats hoarding if you dont get rid off things because money cant buy them things- again. things progress and move foward it may improve in others ways but not these ways it should. meaning i liked that thing they should then and not the things now. coz thats all that catchs my fancy.

  66. B.... H....

money doesn't always buy what you need. but think at it this way one less thing to solve and do? tick list. we can only do things for now. things that i like get phased out discontinued that money cant buy so i dont buy at all. custom made cant be remade again later as that model because it doesn't get sold. if that custom made toy for example they made if it breaks you have to pay money again to get it custom made its just one of them things that life disappoints you.

  67. B.... H....

why? don't the have to jobs for others where- workaholics that love their jobs- that they have jack of all trades jobs. where everything connects- where everything done for you. but we dont know all the answers for things because humans can do what's humanly possible to do? where everything connects for everyone everything but i dont think it works that way.

  68. j.... ....

One of Bruce's greatest songs of the last 20 years...this song is so moving and heartfelt. Best song on the fantastic Wrecking Ball album in my opinion

    j.... ....

    johnnyM809 - It's my favourite as well!

  69. J.... C....

To all those people who grew up in difficult financial circumstances but surrounded by people who loved them, a world of dog eared paperbacks, second hand cars, hand me down clothes but strong families, Mr Springsteen thank you.

    J.... C....

Jesus...you nailed the heart of this song John. I felt that comment in my soul.

  70. C.... P....

    Boss..for ever...the best!

  71. T.... W....

Hey boss you taught me a lot you Dylan Lennon we have to care for each other man im putting up homeless people man we are going to have the best tomatoes and vegies ever theres a new world coming

  72. T.... W....

second best song on the album i thought reminds me of the boys that came back from war in australia  and put in like my grandad tobruk vet who would not only mow the lawn at his place  but also  his crippled mate next door who was disabled from tobruk lets start caring again

  73. M.... V....

driving in my car, listening to this brings me goose bumps every time, I feel that everything actually  will be alright no matter what the "fears" may tell you, so thanks Bruce <3

"We'll start caring for each other like Jesus said that we might."

  77. D.... T....

This is the rare sort of music that's worth driving the long way home, just so you can listen a little longer.

    D.... T....

    Dividend Titan amen brother.

    D.... T....

I've driven miles out of my way for that reason

    D.... T....

Dividend Titan I sit in my car when I pull in my garage.

  78. T.... Q....

this song is precious! I think the song is about showing how much he loves his wife and that he would do anything for her.

  79. j.... b....

That's me, I figured out after 57 years, and at least 5 major - and different - job changes in the last 25 years. I can Repair and Upholster furniture; Work in customer service offices, manage a mail sort floor, Write books, and even manage to have fun hangin out with the one son I have left in this world. It is a wonderful life, after all, even when it sucks!

    j.... b....

john blower you're a good man - I know exactly where you're coming from. It's a good attitude, it's liberating!

    j.... b....

Good thought you have there-- "It is a wonderful life, after all, even when it sucks". Thanks

  80. I.... ....

    we'll be alright...

  81. w.... ....

Brings tears to my eyes every time.. no words, sooo good. As long as there are at least a few of us that truly feel these words...maybe theres hope. Thank you Bruce, for so beautifully singing whats on my heart.

  82. 7.... ....

With such fantastic lyrics, a heavenly voice and great music coming together you get pure GOLD

  83. j.... ....

    Yet another Springsteen masterpiece

  84. M.... B....

You can thank propaganda for that. Kids see what is cool and imitate it. This generation is full of followers and immature people who throw a fit if they don't get what they want. The entertainment business capitalizes on this and gets richer.

  85. S.... D....

YOU realize that just makes it worse right? Being that Bruce is global and bieber is not?

  86. l.... ....

I know, but it brings me some relief when I think about how Bruce got to produce music during a time when you could make millions just by selling albums. Now Musicians have to make their money through concerts because people keep getting music for free and not buying albums.

  87. R.... ....

Real Bruce fans enjoy the music and dont give a fuck about Bieber

  88. j.... b....

Wow, at 56, I have had to become this song to keep a job. Love this song, and yeah saw Bruce in Central Park for free in 1973, when he was singing "Greetings From Asbury Park". Love his version of Blinded by the light!

    j.... b....

I'm 56 too, and I can't do nothing right, except for my music...

  89. L.... F....

I guess we have to carry on, though it has been so unforgiven damage by some rogues. Shot between the eyes for them bastards is not a bad idea in these circumstances. In our long history that has been the law many times.

  90. F.... J....

Only americans can see this, yeah

  91. G.... H....

I'm sorry for your great loss.

  92. E.... E....

im glad this song is so long

People who like this song should also check out "Ordinary man" by Christy Moore.

  98. S.... ....

RIP grandpa great stein❤ hope you and grandma great stein are having fun in heaven

  99. S.... ....

My great grandfather died in April, and in his will he said "buy a keg or two, invite everyone over in my garage, and have a party, don't cry that I'm gone, remember me but don't let my death be a sad event, share old stories and be there for eachother" and that's what we did, my grandmother (his daughter) played this song and said it reminds her of him. And I've never cried so much in my life. My great grandfather was a jack of all trades. And I am happy he's out of pain, he died the best way

  100. P.... G....

So so sorry, bro.Bruce is good at times like that.
