Bruce Springsteen - Iceman Lyrics

Sleepy town ain't got the guts to budge
Baby, this emptiness has already been judged
I wanna go out tonight, I wanna find out what I got

You're a strange part of me, you're a preacher's girl
And I don't want no piece of this mechanical world
Got my arms open wide and my blood is runnin' hot

We'll take the midnight road right to the devil's door
And even the white angels of Eden with their flamin' swords
Won't be able to stop us from hittin' town in this dirty old Ford

Well it don't take no nerve when you got nothin' to guard
I got tombstones in my eyes and I'm runnin' real hard
My baby was a lover and the world just blew her away

Once they tried to steal my heart, beat it right outta my head
But baby they didn't know that I was born dead
I am the iceman, fightin' for the right to live

I say better than the glory roads of heaven, better off ridin'
Hellbound in the dirt, better than the bright lines of the freeway
Better than the shadows of your daddy's church
Better than the waiting, baby better off is the search

Mientras machacaban a los demás , todo eran risas y bromas.

This song features some of the best lyrics Bruce ever wrote. One of the few outtakes that would've fit on Darkness. "We'll take the midnight road, right to the devil's door, and even the white angels of Eden, with their flaming swords, won't be able to stop us from hitting town in this dirty old Ford." One of the greatest set of words in the history of pop music. Stunning.

Sounds like Racing in the Street.

Meeting Across the River too. Basically a fusion of his best piano based songs and makes this even better

I heard this song for the very first time a long time ago when the "In the Land of Women" movie was being played on broadcast TV in México, but it was the only part I could watch. I immediately felt the song touching my soul. I remember being dumped by an ex-girlfriend I profoundly loved and the first thing I did after that moment was to play this song, get on the bus and start crying. Every time I listen to this song it hurts a little bit.

I've always wanted to watch the whole "In the Land of Women" movie with my current girlfriend. Unfortunately, she speaks little English so it's almost impossible for her to understand a movie without subtitles in Spanish. If someone knows where to get it with Spanish captions, I would be very grateful. Greetings from México!

That's welcome news. I'll be there Auckland 2/25/17. That ticket's my most prized possession.

    Dear World,

Please don't tear yourself apart for the next few months.

    Yours sincerely,
    Blue

Apparently Bruce had even forgotten ever written this when he suddenly stumbled upon it during the production of Tracks. I know people who'd give an arm and a leg to be able to write anything like it, and he just ups and forgets about it. What a man.

its an offence against music that this song has only 32000 likes :/

TOTALLY AGREE! Can't imagine people can't hear the heartache, heartbreak and destitute of a lost soul. The tears well up, but the fight begins and you just know that it will win, they will win.

  18. A.... S....

Ever been to Devil's door. I have, me and Brucey live in the same area. ;p

When I hit the edge of this town in my dirty old Ford, I went around a curve and hit a cow. Maybe this town is sleepy and it doesn't budge, I know for sure that cow didn't budge. If I had been speeding, there would have been a whole different outcome. The waiting and the search almost collided with one another.

  22. S.... ....

Sleepy town ain't got the guts to budge
Baby this emptiness has already been judged...oh Bruce.

  37. j.... ....

what exactly is "singing like bruce"? his style and approach has changed several times over the years...how can a person sing, but not sing like themselves?? you may not like his new style, but he still sings like him...just him NOW and not how he did THEN.

  38. J.... B....

What an incredible song. I was floored when I listened to Tracks, it's scary how great an artist Bruce is when songs like this don't make it on his albums.

  39. C.... S....

Remember listening to this years ago and my tape copy had a couple of bad drop outs in it. Now we just need a Tracks II with Evacuation of the West, Preacher's Daughter and the full band version of The Promise.

  40. C.... H....

    vintage bruce

  41. X.... S....

One of Bruce's most stunning studio outtakes, from his 1977 sessions for Darkness On The Edge Of Town. It was issued in 1998 on Tracks, his superb, 4xCD box set of outtakes. "But, baby, they didn't know that I was born dead."
