Interesting that the first lines clearly are a "rewrite" of the beginning of "My beautiful reward" - he took those words and went in two different directions with them in these two songs - I like that - because that's how life is anyway..... We can be 'happy' - and still we're always somehow searching for that "beautiful reward".... (for the rest of the Catholics out there: like St. Augustine's "my heart is restless until it rests in you, Lord")

How and why is this not on an album exactly?

The answer may lie in the liner notes to "Tracks." (1998). "Happy" was recorded in 1991. This is from the Tracks liner notes (Springsteen's words): "...my albums became a series of choices – what to include, what to leave out? I based my decisions on my creative point of view at the moment – the subject I was trying to focus on, something musical or emotional I was trying to express...One of the results of working like this was that a lot of music, including some of my favorite things, remained unreleased...
I'm glad to finally be able to share this music; here are some of the ones that got away."

I wouldn't be surprised if "Happy" was one his "favorite things" that he refers to here. What an absolutely gorgeous song. As always in Springsteen's music, the sense of hope is tempered by harsh realities that always lurk beneath the surface.

Springsteen is very underrated as a balladeer. "Sad Eyes" is another beauty that wasn't released as part of an "album," and there are many many more.

Of course, and I used to say he is an American Treasure, but that's parochial and selfish. He's so much more than that. He's a Human Treasure. His greatness is such that all of human kind can bask in the miracle that has resulted in the music of Bruce Springsteen.

He is the every mans hero. He is real. He tells it like it is. life is tough. A talented artist with a gift of revealing ones soul and endeaver we all can relate to. I am proud of him because he is from my old home, the Great State of New Jersey.

My dad loves Bruce and I've grown up listening to his music and I love him as well ! I have so many fond memories of Bruce being played around the house growing up ! I'm getting married soon and I would love to dance with my dad to this song (it's my favorite Bruce song, and my dad loves it too) Thoughts please on if it's an appropriate father daughter dance song ????

I'm getting married in July 16 and as you my bride grew up with her dad loving Bruce. I only heard this song recently for the 1st time but it's beautiful and she is going to have the 1st dance with her dad to this.....I'm happy :)

Amazing that Bruce has never performed this live.  Tracks proved that his garbage would be other people's gold.

I've always said that about Bruce. He could make a career on his unreleased songs alone that would still blow other artists' top material out of the water.

That’s absolutely true. I remember listening to my Springsteen bootlegs in the late 1970’s wondering why these songs aren’t on released albums. Some great songs didn’t make the cut......at least to his standards.
