Bruce Springsteen - Growin' Up Lyrics

Well, I stood stone-like at midnight, suspended in my masquerade
And I combed my hair till it was just right, and commanded the night brigade
I was open to pain and crossed by the rain and I walked on a crooked crutch
I strolled all alone through a fallout zone and came out with my soul untouched
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, but when they said, "Sit down," I stood up
Ooh... growin' up

The flag of piracy flew from my mast, my sails were set wing to wing
I had a jukebox graduate for first mate, she couldn't sail but she sure could sing
I pushed B-52 and bombed them with the blues with my gear set stubborn on standing
I broke all the rules, strafed my old high school, never once gave thought to landing
I hid in the clouded warmth of the crowd, but when they said, "Come down," I threw up
Ooh... growin' up

I took month-long vacations in the stratosphere, and you know it's really hard to hold your breath
Swear I lost everything I ever loved or feared, I was the cosmic kid in full costume dress
Well, my feet they finally took root in the earth, but I got me a nice little place in the stars
And I swear I found the key to the universe in the engine of an old parked car
I hid in the mother breast of the crowd, but when they said, "Pull down," I pulled up
Ooh... growin' up
Ooh... growin' up

This song changed my life the very first time I ever heard it as a child watching “Big Daddy” and has continued to change my life throughout the twenty years since. Thank you, Bruce. Still the boss forever and always.
    Sincerely,
A young man who grew up on the shore with love in his heart and wonder in his mind

  15. K.... L....

    GREAT SONG!!

  16. R.... ....

“Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.”
    Samuel Ullman

Bruce's early music is so superior to what came later,, just my opinion

  18. R.... ....

“One of the pitfalls of childhood is that one doesn't have to understand something to feel it. By the time the mind is able to comprehend what has happened, the wounds of the heart are already too deep.”

  24. O.... ....

Easily one of his most underrated songs

  25. c.... ....

Don’t think the world was quite ready yet for Bruce in 1973 because if this had of been released a few years later it would be regarded as one his best songs

  26. M.... k....

So happy I was weaned on great poets

  27. J.... B....

syllable suicide like stream of consciousness poetry.

  33. d.... ....

  34. R.... B....

    Pegged my teen years...

  35. M.... P....

He fit more lyrics into a single song than most artists fit on an entire album, especially on this album. That's some prolific songwriting.
Early Bruce; the words are just pouring from him. Great stuff.

    M.... P....

    Pouring out in Lennonesque precision!

  36. r.... b....

So if they said sit down and you stood up that's means you just remaind standing because if they said sit down that would mean they wher alredy standing

  37. H.... w....

great song about the angst of adolescence .......love his music but not a fan of him!

    H.... w....

Pure poetry.....always. "when they said come down, I threw up!" My life,

    C.... S....

    Great lyrics.

  45. r.... g....

    Ooh ... creciendo
    Ooh ... creciendo

  46. r.... g....

  64. D.... R....

There's a public campaign by hard-right-Ayn-Rand-republicans to smear The Boss. Very sad on their behalf.

    J.... C....

The same year, this kid in my freshman dorm had a decent stereo with good speakers. It often filled the quad with sound. The Pure Prairie League album was in heavy rotation with The Eagles and got old pretty quickly. But I'm still thanking him for introducing me to Bruce, such great energy and a fresh, poetic sound!

    J.... C....

Then I hope you've heard Bowie's version of this song. It's amazing!

I thought that I should check out this song in response to the recent news article about the young fellow who Springsteen invited up on stage to perform this song with him at a concert in Brisbane.
About three years ago I stayed at a bed and breakfast in Asbury Park. The owner of the BnB educated me about Springsteen's first album.

  91. a.... ....

Somebody said "Bruce is the hardest working Man in Show Business". I would tend to agree. At a recent show in Newark N.J. Bruce played for almost 4 hours! I was exausted just watching him. He is just this mixture of hard driving Rock and Roll and swelling emotion. As Steve Earle put it, "The Last of the Troubadours". The thing that really sets Bruce apart is the unadulterated joy that he brings to everything he does. Never saw him have a bad night! God bless you Bruce,Your the best!

    a.... ....

Too bad Bruce turned into a wack job liberal. I used to love his music.
