Bruce Springsteen - Backstreets Lyrics
One soft infested summer
Me and Terry became friends
Trying in vain to breathe
The fire we was born in
Catching rides to the outskirts
Sleeping in that old abandoned beach house
Getting wasted in the heat
And hiding on the backstreets
Hiding on the backstreets
With a love so hard and filled with defeat
Running for our lives at night on them backstreets
Slow dancing in the dark
On the beach at Stockton's Wing
Where desperate lovers park
Huddled in our cars
Waiting for the bells that ring
In the deep heart of the night
We let loose of everything
To go running on the backstreets
Running on the backstreets
Terry you swore we'd live forever
Taking it on them backstreets together
Endless juke joints and Valentino drag
Where dancers scraped the tears
Up off the streets dressed down in rags
Running into the darkness
Some hurt bad some really dying
At night sometimes it seemed
You could hear the whole damn city crying
Blame it on the lies that killed us
Blame it on the truth that ran us down
You can blame it all on me Terry
It don't matter to me now
When the breakdown hit at midnight
There was nothing left to say
But I hated him
And I hated you when you went away
Now laying here in the dark
You're like an angel on my chest
Just another tramp of hearts
Crying tears of faithlessness
Remember all the movies, Terry
We'd go see
Trying to learn how to walk like the heroes
We thought we had to be
Well after all this time
To find we're just like all the rest
Stranded in the park
And forced to confess
To hiding on the backstreets
Hiding on the backstreets
Where we swore forever friends
On the backstreets until the end
[repeat with ad-libs until the end:]
Hiding on the backstreets

Love it. Yet a big fan of Greetings from Asbury Park.
this is art at the highest level
IfI could give THIS song 100 "thumbs up" I certainly would!!! HIS BEST!
How good is this introduction
The best xx
Me and Teasy became friends he's gone but not forgotten still running on them Backstreets together R.I.
P my friend
His music changed my path, my empathy, my confidence. As much as my family it created the adult me. He instilled in me urgency and an unbreakable attachment to truth and righteousness.
I just heard this for the first time on the radio and I couldn't stop laughing. This is one of the funniest songs I've ever heard.

BRUCE......he is what he is......
This whole album is much better than going to church....any church.
This is a top ten Springsteen song for sure. LOST IN THE FLOOD IS GOOD ALSO.
Bruce Springsteen, got me through my teenage years, in the 1980s. This song, is so powerful gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it. Reminds me, of all my friends, in manton. He used to hide, in those back streets. I miss you all, especially Lynn Gaskell Helen Fowler and Mandy Broome.
I'm doing this song at my show tonight!!
Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down.....Blame it all on me Joey, it doesn't matter to me now...
There are song writers and there are poets.....
This whole album was a monster. He was like Godzilla for 20 years.
40yrs later this song still gives me the chills.
BORN TO RUN my all time favorite album
Perfect Bruce..nothing more to say
Masterpiece!!! Absolutely a masterpiece
Yes great song.
This is a masterpiece of raw emotion. You can feel the depth of pain through both the music and the story of the lyrics. He reaches so deeply in his vocals to make this song actually like an experience. It is like you are living it with him. To me, he is an icon because he is so real.
A hymn from my youth.
I'm not a rock expert and I would really like someone to point me to a better, more desperate and life changing studio vocal performance of any artist
I've always thought this was the best vocal performance Bruce ever put on record. And let's face it, that's a damn high bar.
And I hated you when you went away.
This song goes Out to Lisa R., Class of 1983, Terre Haute North High School and it was great seeing you Tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who is listening in 2019? ".....Trying to learn to walk like the heroes we thought we had to be..." Love you Bruuuuucce :>)
BIG BOSS HOG DADDY-O YEEHAW
Every moment of my childhood in the city is captured on this album. Perfect. Beautiful. Portraying my sacred memories. Some that I'd even forgotten.
The greatest Bruce song ever!
yes sir plus this entire album
Just wonderful!
One of the greatest vocal performances ever.Ive met the Boss on several occcasions. There is no coincedences. The man is his music.
It’s like God tip toeing over a heavenly piano just.after he’s left a sweet bath x
Simply a brilliant song...
This song is the kick-off to summer!
I love that piano intro. It’s absolutely beautiful.
Bru ce
Is
You know ..who
Heaven ly
Great song about a homosexual encounter. Perhaps Bruce should get buggered more often.
A few days before Christmas 1974....my girlfriend and I had just broke and my right leg was in a cast from a sports injury. I was at my parents house thumbing through one of my moms magazines and there was an article in it about this guy named Bruce Springsteen and that he had this new album coming out in 1975 called Born to Run. I had not heard of Bruce up to that point but thought I would buy the record when it came out. Glad I did....then I bought all the albums he had done previously. Love most of his stuff....but I really love his early music.
When I was a young man my very first love was a girl named Terri. I was a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen and still am to this day. 40 years later we are still friends.
Truly humble of The Boss to write a song to honor a younger generation of musicians,The BackStreet Boys. With all that he's accomplished its nice to see that he's still a class act.
Blame it on the lies the killed us; Blame it on the truth that ran us down!
The instrumental intro to this song is just...so stately, so fucking heartbreaking, and then the band explodes, and plays the intro again, and Bruce starts singing...and the song just gets better from there. Bruce must be a God, no human being could have written a song this great
This studio version is the greatest flat out rock vocal of all time. He lays it all out here. John Lennon's vocal on Twist and Shout a very close second
in love since 75 the purity of studio versions of BTR blow me away
The best!!
You're tripping. I love Bruce but really
thanks bruce for the memories
BRUUUUUUCCEEEEE i get goose bumbs as soon i hear the first 3 keys of that piano , who ever dislike this needs to be taken to the backstreets to understand why this song was written .. losers
That piano bit is simply allsorts x
One of the greatest song ever. Iove It. But that's me.
I'm not even that big of a Bruce Springsteen fan, but hands down, I think this is the best vocal performance in rock history. Show Must Go On, Love Reign O'er Me, Oh Darling, etc ... they all have nothing on this one.
A perfect example of someone straining his voice so much it sounds totally unintelligible.
The greatest piano intro ever.
The GOAT
Great piano and sax solo all in one classic song,,,Great Song
And a very good album!!!! Liked the most of him!
Nothing is criminal on this song, it's about friendships
I used to like other BS tunes more... But as I grow older, this one is the most complete song he ever did.... Musically, lyrically and most importantly spiritually. You also never can get this one loud enough! Thanks Bruce.
I still don't get this: Is Terry a girl? Or a boy? Or a car?
And don't forget people he's a Jersey guy!
Thanks for including lyrics.
time to break out the microwave popcorn. i have a microwave from the early 80's and she still works but what does this have to do with Bruce? I answer my own question with lyrics about the silver screen in another song.
I saw Bruce do this whole album at the Garden . It was just awesome
An uppercut of a song, the piano intro, the almighty wailing, the build-up, I can play it on repeat a multitude of times and never tire of this epic song. Difficult to find the right words ...
Makes a man cry, heart wrenching, and I love it, I can't understand how it's not a lot more recognized as a Masterpiece of the era, of music.
His most passionate work. Sings it like he’ll die if he doesn’t.
I. Love. This.
In the late 1970s Rolling Stone published this huge book called The Illustrated History of Rock and Roll with this day glow orange cover, a thing of beauty. The book said the there were two songs that expressed the history of rock and roll like no others. The first was Bob Dylan's "Positively Fourth Street". The other was Backstreets by Bruce Springsteen from the Born to Run album. 'Nuff said.
Love that modulation to A major at 2:44,so glorious
when springsteen breaks into it at 3.25...I feel i'm going to come completely apart inside....this is a masterpiece of rock n roll....
Such an amazing song... brings back memories.. good ones..
This song gives me chills down my spine it makes me think about how and where I grew up I lived this song thank God for the people and time we had in the 80's
IS THIS THE GUY FROM THE E STREET BAND?!
To bad his heart wasn't in it..
There is just so much pathos, agony, nostalgia, passion in this song. It's the quintessential "August" song - feverish May/September friendships/relationships/affairs are kindled, burn, and are now ending, but will live on in the hearts of all those touched by them.
Great song. Great album. The Boss Rules! !😆😆😆
One day I had this song in my mind but I didn't know the name of it so I did a search on youtube, what is the name of the song where Bruce sings Wahhh Wahhh!! 😂😂. True story.
Forever Friends Bruce ✌️💪🏽
ive never lived on the backstreets and we dont have any backstreets were i live like that and i have nothing to be scared of here we dont have any high crimanilaty here just petty crimes once in a while !
Every time I hear this it leaves me speechless.
This song takes me back I grew up in a waterfront area where we partied at beach house my first love first beer first everything was on the back streets this song just sends shivers down to my core and chills down my spine
Listen to that Fender ringing in the verses. Damn.
Reminds me back in the day firing a HK .308 Rifle with a rotating bolt, rail stock 20 rd. mags circa 1983 you bitches.
Saw him at the Fox in St Louis in about 2007 when he was doing his one-man show. Story goes that he doesn't like to do this song so much, too emotionally draining or something. At the Fox, a kid requested it and he did it on the piano, beautiful rendition.
I love the album. I don't like the recording. It sounds like a Phil Spector recording. over produced and kinda muddy. I've searched in vain for a better version of this LP.
I had a friend like Terry
This is a work of art. A Masterpiece. Were it a painting it would be in the finest museum.
First saw him on Feb 10, 1977 with my friend Jason. I was 16. The pot smoke was intense. Someone had a bota filled with Sangria which I drank from and I couldn't believe how much energy this band had. This was the set list:
Something in the Night
Spirit in the Night
Thunder Road
Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
Backstreets
Jungleland
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
Born to Run
Quarter to Three
Everything about this song fills me with joy. That piano intro is just gorgeous, undeniable.
I agree, awesome, powerful, operatic piano intro, and a great powerful song.
