Bruce Springsteen - American Land Lyrics

What is this Land America. So many travel there
I'm going now while I'm still young. My darling, meet me there
Wish me luck, my lovely. I'll send for you when I can
And we'll make our home in the American Land

Over there all the woman wear silk and satin to their knees
And children dear, the sweets, I hear, are growing on the trees
Gold comes rushing out the river straight into your hands
When you make your home in the American Land

There's diamonds in the sidewalk, there's gutters lined in song
Dear, I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard-working man
Who will make his home in the American Land

I docked at Ellis Island in a city of light and spire
I wandered to the valley of red-hot steel and fire
We made the steel that built the cities with the sweat of our two hands
We made our home in the American Land

There's diamonds in the sidewalk, there's gutters lined in song
Dear, I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard-working man
Who will make his home in the American Land

The McNicholas and the Posalskis, the Smiths, Zerillis, too
The Blacks, the Irish, Italians, the Germans and the Jews
They come across the water a thousand miles from home
With nothing in their bellies but the fire down below

They died building the railroads, they worked to bones and skin
They died in the fields and factories, names scattered in the wind
They died to get here a hundred years ago, they're still dying now
The hands that built the country were always trying to keep down

There's diamonds in the sidewalk, there's gutters lined in song
Dear, I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard-working man
Who will make his home in the American Land
Who will make his home in the American Land
Who will make his home in the American Land

I don’t know how he does it that’s absolutely brilliant the greatest band on earth and the Irish what can you say sure they built America.

  14. Theike Jansen

    Best Springsteen song 🙏🏻

  15. corryjookit

This is magical and reminiscent of Fairytales of New York in its tempo and musicality. Don't know if I've put that correctly, but I do hope so. ...I am , my Father often said, an Irish Princess, descended from the great Kings of Ireland and Dad would have loved it, perhaps asking me to sing it. Ah ! No. Bruce has it down just perfectly. Perhaps I should just go and claim back the land and its' castle ?

  16. Loulou Ngiraudel

The immigrants are a part of the America

There is a most agreeable Irish American sound to this song the way I hear it. It makes me want to go and see America for myself-a nation of immigrants.

  19. John Deegan

Bruce has some IRISH BLOOD but equally important are his STONES.
One of the VERY TOP COMMERCIALLY successful Rock stars willing to address the fact : as wonderful as this LAND is— the clown(s) in charge are WRONG. Kudos Bruce.

Great American Melting Pot From Schoolhouse Rock says that America as a nation is made up of people of almost every nationality and they should be giving the same opportunities.

American Land By Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band says America have you forgotten? Almost everything that you see and enjoy as Americans was created/built by minorities/immigrants. "We made the steel that built the cities with the sweat of our two hands. The McNicholas, the Posalski's, the Smiths, Zirillis too. The Blacks, the Irish, the Italians, the Germans and the Jews. The Puerto Ricans, illegals, the Asians, Arabs miles from home. Come across the water with a fire down below. They died building the railroads, worked to bones and skin. They died in the fields and factories, names scattered in the wind. They died to get here a hundred years ago, they're dyin' now. The hands that built the country were all trying to keep down."

Mr.Springsteen, i don't know if you will ever see this, but i a while back i met you in person, i was just a little kid in Lexington Kentucky with my father, then he saw you walk out of the gift shop of the hotel/conference center with a pack of razors, i can remember you saying that the reason you were in town was because your daughter had a horse riding competition. That is one of my favorite memories and i still have an old picture of me standing with you, i was only about 4-5 years old...i just wanna say, God bless you

  40. Lori Johnson

    Now more than ever.

  41. 75smurfette

I nominate this for the new National Anthem!

    Lyn Cohn

do you understand it? it's not exactly complimentary. it's basically saying that immigrants were sold a bunch of lies about how rich they'd get and how quickly if they came to america; but it didn't happen. "the hands that built this country they're trying to keep out."

  42. Maja Milankovic

my god, what a song 💪

  48. thaler67

The America I love is its immigrants. Without them, there would be no America.

    Weeb Killer TYBG

thaler67 Immigrants from Europe and East Asia *

    Frank Morley

America = Immigrants, but legal ones. And don't start about how the original settlers weren't "legal" immigrants. Native Americans didn't have a government with such laws, which means they didn't care about protecting its borders.

    Didier Schein

So you don't love the Indians ?

    Mario Quade

@Frank Morley Right, they totally didn't care about protecting their borders or anything like that. There never were any conflicts with the settlers when they tried to claim more land than the natives were willing to give them. Never, not once. That's quite an interesting interpretation of history.

    Pow Pow

there would be native americans maybe

    ++++++
Brings tears to my eyes. :)
When I was little, the neighbors across the street hosted students from many countries. (Rotary?)
I had classmates with parents from all over. Even more so in high school & college. ( & ever since). I am eternally grateful for that. ( Thanks, Mohammed from Kuwait, Andy from Taiwain, Anand from Mumbai, et al. )I managed to avoid the fear, ignorance , & bigotry that is so prevalent today. <3 :)

    Anne Elvecrog

Michael Mike love this song. I have coworkers from Germany, Canada, Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq. Wish our President would remember we're a nation of immigrants.

    Evan Connors

JH Xu yeah because the United States didn’t exist in the 1600s, headass

  56. Sarah Jax

This must be him paying his respects to his Irish heritage? It sounds great!

    Eleni McKnight

The last line is "For all you travelers out there", a part of me wonders if this is for the Irish Travelers, the gypsies.

  71. Nothing Really

Bruce Springsteen is the greatest songwriter of the 20th century. However, the Seeger Sessions is his greatest 21st century work ^-^

  72. Steven Campbell

    going to see him tonight.

    Nothing Really

Quick. Make a sign that reads "18 minute New York City Serenade" and film it for me please. Sorry if that's too much to ask lol

    Steven Campbell

+Nothing Really lol I want him to play Streets of Philly but I doubt he will.

    John Hocking

Nothing Really - See NY, 8/23/16; Rome, 7/11/13; & Boston Videos; Foxboro, 9/14/16. The B Side of that 44 year-old, The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (1973) album ain't half bad - I mean, of course, considering the songs were written by a 23 year-old. I wonder what his critic trolls had accomplished at 23. Or ever?

  73. lily

    Love this man omg

  74. Ninfa V.
