Bruce Hornsby - The End Of The Innocence Lyrics
Remember when the days were long
And rolled beneath a deep blue sky
Didn't have a care in the world
With mommy and daddy standin' by
But "happily ever after" fails
The lawyer dwell on small details
Since daddy had to fly
But I know a place where we can go
That's still untouched by men
We could sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
You can lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
This is the end of the innocence
O'beautiful, for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers dwell on small details
Since daddy had to lie.
But I know a place where we can go
And was a away this sin
We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair spill all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence
Who knows how long this will last
Now we've come so far, so fast
But, somewhere back there in the dust
That same small town in each of us
I need to remember this
So baby give me just one kiss
Come and take a long last look
Before we say goodbye
Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

Frkn genius.... Bruce should be putting out new music today....
What an amazing version of a song I really loved and heard first with Don Henley, Bruce does something amazingly fresh with this beautiful version.
Fantastic
no comment , other than this comment , beautiful song , thank you ....
My cheeks are wet because it is raining. Inside my home.
no puedo descargarla porfavor podras pasarmela a [email protected] gracias
Stunning...
Nostalgically beautiful.
Best song. Reminds me of my ole days.
I love how Bruce H does what I think of as the “Sinatra” thing - plays around a bit with the timing of the melody. Even with the accompaniment sometimes, as I heard in a great version of his once. I love both artists and their interpretations, each for different reasons. Henley of course as the lyricist conveys the words beautifully, and Hornsby’s instrumental work is sublime.
Similarly, I love hearing JD Souther singing his songs, rough and ready as they are in his older years.
Brilliant song
Henley extracts the subtleties of the melody better I think.
Bruce may not know how to help us retrieve our innocence, but he helps us know we have lost it, and that we should realize where we are.
I love that!!! ❤️
Astounding prezzie for the American phychy.
We should be allowed to "like" this upload every time that we listen to it - then you'd have over 1 million by now. :)
Great piano solo and great music, timeless!!
👍👍👍
Messaged you a year or two ago asking if there was another place to find this video since, for whatever reason, it's been banned in the US. Nothing you could do about it, unfortunately. But I'm happy to report that I'm finally in another country where I can get it and this makes me happy. Thanks for ever uploading this in the first place, and for keeping it up.
What a great vibe .. .. ..must be lots of fun to play live .. .. .. long live the Hornsby .. .. ..let you hair fall all around me .. .. ..
Would love to see someone cover this version on piano
Thanks Jim.I admire Bruce,blessings!
Tremenda versión, lo mejor!!!!!
One of the best musicians ever
Very nice..remembering good old times...heart warming : )
Just love the sound of the piano
😊👍
Hello! What version is this? Is it included in a live album? Regards!!!
Love the melodic piano into shear beauty
Shite audio. However a mint tune.
Absolutely amazing Bruce is so talented unlike the “musicians” of today
words are not enough to describe this tune.
I can't handle the amount of emotions put into the piano... simply amazing!
Thanks for sharing this. I am a long term fan who plays his music every day for the last 35 years. I hadn't heard this version and it is absolutely superb. Need to find on MP3 if I can. Bruce is a musical genius.
Join the club Robert , how come he is so under appreciated , the man put his music in my head 35 years ago and I'm still loving it ,and so is 1 of my kids , the other never got it !
The very first time I heard "the end of the innocence" shortly after it was released...I knew instantly that Bruce was playing the piano.
Good miusc TKS 🏁🏁 🏁㊗
Hornsby never fails to deliver a 'frisson' with this tune.
Vraiment magnifique!!! J'adore.Merci pour partager.
PURE...............................
Absolutely tremendous version ....listen and love X
one word- fabulous
very intence & emotional voice.....
Don't even think about it. Nowhere close to Henley's original.
This intro...so incredible gorgeous. Love it
Well, what can i say!!?? Other than thank you so much for the music,it means so much to me,and to others, probably more than you'll ever know!!,I just heard this version a couple of years ago! Don Henley sings it Brilliantly, but Bruce you took it to another planet!!!! Love and respect from a 40 yr old from Glasgow,Scotland.
Great days in central park, this bh track haunted me, in a good way
Been with my lady 34 years now , Bruce has been there nearly the same , I've got many faults but I obviously have good taste too , this is pure class .
The reason I never took up the piano !
this intro is so f....k marvellous, always a big van of Bruce.
Yep Bruce played piano for Don on this track... Both are outstanding...
Lets just listen and enjoy
i m 48 years 0ld ,i love this voice
Why did you feel the need to announce your age? You could have just said "I love his voice" without adding the qualifier of your age.
i love you Bruce
Sesame Age: nice said ! Poetry in a dozen words ....
enjoy!!!
The intro piano is the most emotional and that I've ever heard so far ... crosses the heart and is like falling in love for the first time. I love it
Anna Congiu Je suis d'accord.
You said the words right out my mouth, pure class!!
Very true and beautifully said.
Unique voice and a unique talent to match.
Beautiful is so fitting for this version. Thanks a lot for sharing!
wonderful
The End of the Innocence" is the lead single and title track from Don Henley's third solo studio album of the same name, released in 1989. Henley co-wrote and co-produced the song with Bruce Hornsby, who also performed piano; both artists perform the song live in their respective concerts..end of story...
stickman5454 didn’t know that
and both versions are excellent
And here we are stickman5454 listening to it thirty years on!
amazing only word for it
A good friend of 2pac
Eines meiner Lieblinglieder und wird es wohl auch für immer bleiben... Danke an dieser Stelle für den Post!
Some of the chord progressions just blow me away, god I wish I had his talent. Legend- period.
Oh come on, what more can I say about this guy....I'm at a serious loss of words to describe how great a musician he is. I was sold in the 80's with him...now this rendition of a song he helped make nearly tops the original
Don Henley's version is great, but this version has always been my favorite version. This version was filmed in front of a small audience at the Sony Studios in California. I had the concert on VHS and it's on the Harbor Lights CD single as a bonus track.
You can argue all you like about who's version is the best, just keep in mind that Bruce and John Hornsby wrote this beautiful song, and not Don Henley or the fucking Eagles.
Actually, Henley and Bruce Hornsby co-wrote it.
No you're wrong. I'm a professional pianist and I have Bruce Hornsby Sheet Music Anthology Collection!
Bruce Hornsby writes all of his music with his brother John. Bruce writes the music and John writes the lyrics!!!
I do apologize, I just had a look at the sheet music and yes you're right it was written both by Bruce H and Don H.
Don't get me wrong, Don Henley and the rest of the Eagles members are legends. Being a pianist myself, I am a huge fan of Bruce Hornsby, and I just happen to like this extended version better.
No worries, and so do I.
quien la escribió Bruce o Don He ley?
L O V E I T
I'm a 42 year old male,a interstate truck driver by trade,an this tune makes me tear up for some reason, then again beautiful music will do that I guess..thanks for sharing......memories 👍👍
Greg Kent I'm a 54 year old joiner , quality is quality don't matter how old we are or what we do ,when you fail to appreciate good stuff like this then its time to worry .
Wow!!!!
he cowrote it
Wow. Another golden find on Utube. I had no idea Bruce Hornby even did this. 1st class version for sure.
Oh, my. So much gorgeousness makes me chills all over. Heaven in bits and pieces all rolled into one. Gracias, mi amigo!
Its my pleasure.
Are you on face book ? im at jimbob12404 at yahoo dot com
When singer song writers still existed. Lost legends👍🏻
Springsteen, Etheridge, Lorde - er, OK : I'd better stop at Lorde ;)
Once in a while....wind blows shit flows.................Life;s good.....bruce and range......banged the door..........thanks..till the day I'm planted..true story
We love The Range too
He's a good son.................ww love him
Show us the way....................BIG Bruce
We ain't Kids
One day when I learn to fly I'm taking off with this song.
love Bruce and Don...both tracks are great. Seems more powerful with the collaboration though.
one of my greatest artists, thanks god for having you in this generation, ts so good to hear your music.
Shut the fuck up about who's BETTER... this isn't grade school !!!
The song is GREAT, Bruce is GREAT, Don is GREAT and
Glenn Frey was FUCKING GREAT !!!!!
I can see why you resent Grade School. Your vocabulary is so replete with obscenities it's clear you learnt no other civilised adjectives at all
+Baskerville22 That's easy: Fuck inappropriate morality & intellectualism also - problem solved. Have a nice day! :)
Thanks !
58FlatTop Glen had nothing to do with this song wa u on about it was Bruce and don
Pitty people ca'nt just enjoy the music well sad.
...just cos am a Fan,i prefer Bruce's version and of course the long range piano sound display from 2:00 - 2:44....he always has that style...awesome song....
i miss her..i miss her..i love U. r.i.p
Just wonderful, even alongside Henley!
One of the great musicians of the last 3 decades... This recording is awesome!!!
Just found it a few weeks ago,September 2016! absolutley brilliant, just cant get enough of it!!!! Il always listen to this version,Bruce you done it a different kind of justice!!!! ✌❤and respect from, Clydebank,Scotland.

Does anyone know who the sax player is?
Bobby Read...he played with Bruce for like 20 years...Read is a great jazz musician and has a few albums out that are really worth checking out.
Thank you ... it always hits home, brother ...

It is only wonderful works of art like this that keep me from hating life, which I find, generally speaking, vulgar. Thanks for posting.
LOL RYTHIM MACHINE DID NOT SWITCH CORD AT 3.12 !! IT STAYED 'LOCKED AND MISSED AT LEAST 3 OR 4 CHORDS SWITCH... UNTIL 3.22 WHEN IT RETURNED TO NORMAL!'
Have you ever considered the possibility that it was *intentional" that the bassline stayed on F during the first couple of bars in the first verse? :-)
And this people is how you remake songs. If they can not be as good or better then do not do it(PERIOD) One of my favorite Don Henley songs GREAT JOB BRUCE!!!!
This is not a remake. Bruce co-wrote this song with Don Henley. It's merely his interpretation of a song that HE had a hand in......
He does this one in concert. Heard him do it a few times.
it's: Bruce Hornsby music
it's: Don Henley lyrics
I will forever be a fan of Bruce Hornsby
Gerald Willams and me matey .
Wow I am a massive Eagles and Don Henley fan but this version so so good
Bruce did the original of this track, way back in the 80's. He's quite simply a Legend.
Bruce Hornsby wrote the music years before Don Henley wrote the lyrics to the song. The original version is the title song on Henley'1989 album, with Hornsby playing piano and keyboards on that track.
Good job Jim!
I have no idea where this came from , but I downloaded it back in the Kazaa days as a single track. Its impeccable.
thank you for sharing ....
Great!!!!!
