Bruce Hornsby - Fields Of Gray Lyrics

When the night lies so still
Before I go to sleep
I come by, I come by
Just to look at you
In the dim light I say
That in my own small way
I will try, I will try
To help you through

There'll be blue skies falling
There'll be sad scenes and bad dreams
In a world so uncertain
Through the clouds it's hard to see
I will grab you and lift you
As you hold on tight and sway
We'll go walking
Across the fields of gray

There's a place I can go
When the world gets me down
When nothing, when nothing
Goes quite right it seems
As I look there I know
Fortune smiles on me so
But who knows, no one knows
About tomorrow

There'll be blue skies falling
There'll be sad scenes and bad dreams
In a world so uncertain
Through the clouds it's hard to see
I will grab you and lift you
As you hold on tight and sway
We'll go walking
Across the fields of gray

When I was younger I saw things in black and white
Now all I see is a sad, hazy gray
Sometimes I see a narrow flash of light
Sometimes I look and you show me the way

No matter what else happens
What the future will be
In a world so uncertain
Through the clouds it's hard to see
I will grab you and carry you
Calm your fears if you're afraid
We'll go walking
Across the fields of gray

Hi Bruce! I am so honored to have your son, Russell, play a Supporting Character this September in my film, "Denial". I met you personally back in 2004 in Charlotte, NC. I can still remember this song playing on the radio when I was a young rookie police officer and younger actor. :)

I had 7 aunts and 3 uncles who were my Mom's brothers and sisters. Their family was from the Sugarlands in the Great Smoky Mountains and they moved just before the National Park Service took over. They moved to an area called the Glades in the Gatlinburg area in Tennessee. This song reminds me so much of them and the people who had to leave the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains which included Cades Cove. I also had a cousin who was an avid trail hiker and hiker guide. He was known as the 'Jedi'. He recently lost his battle with brain cancer this year. So many people loved him because as they would hike, he would bring some nostalgia and interesting history into the conversation about the families who lived in the Great Smoky Mountains. This song reminds me so much of Mike Maples. RIP (03-05-2019). When I go walking the fields of gray, I think of you.

Best song I’ve ever heard by Bruce Hornsby. This same song is also featured on his CD entitled greatest radio hits which I happen to have. Imagine making up your very own slow dance to this song or having a special cheering team or squad for your favorite sports team like the Saint Louis blues for instance doing their own fun slow style of dance choreography to this song at a sporting event during a tv break or something at the sports venue.

I spent time with my mom, and this song really brings back that memory it was a hike in Tennessee.

  17. I.... M....

This is a song for my boys. My sons. It’s a song about how it feels bringing these kids up into this world of uncertainty, which is the fields of gray. As you get older, you realize I grew up as this cocky-assed kid, everything was black and white. As you get older you realize that it’s not so simple, that it’s mostly gray. And so trying to guide your boys through that is a daunting proposition for me, and it’s a song about love for your kids, and your uncertainty about hoping you can do the best for them.”Bruce Hornsby (59)

    Wow spot on.
