Bruce Hornsby - Cyclone Lyrics

Most of our years have flown away with nothing much decided
Except the board we're playing on, how it's to be divided
Will more years yet die alone? The question's many sided
Got no answers of my own and none have been provided

When I was young there was nothing to know
And the wind followed me wherever I'd go
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

There is a game that's only played in a darkened room with strangers
Dealt down and dirty with unmarked cards eyes closed to dangers
Jealousy folds without playing its hold card, romance raises grinning
I spent several lifetimes there when I could not lose for winning

When I was young there was love for free
Glad to be given and received by me
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand
With a wave of my hand

I believe I can still make the cyclone rise
Just can't see it so well with my fading eyes

A mystery to myself, not everything now I was born to be
All I know is when I wanted it so the wind itself rose for me
You know if it wasn't for love I might just be a wandering man
But I believe I've made the better choice to sing about it with this band

When I was a boy I could summon the moon
With a crook of the finger and a home made tune
I could ride the clouds when they sailed on by
And sing all the words to a wildcat's cry

When I was young there was nothing to know
And the wind followed me wherever I'd go
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

I believe I can still make the cyclone rise
And the cyclone rose, wave of my hand
Rain came down where I made my stand

The lyrics say so much more than so many can hear...Not allowed to speak it, but can sing it, act it, paint it...LOVE it.

    M.... ....

    How was it?

  14. J.... B....

I want to crowd funding new Ent. Network. This music should be locked Cable nets or Webcast! Sting, W. Marsalis, Brian Blade Fellowship on and on Stevie Wonder!!!!! Higher Ground.

  15. J.... B....

Mr. Hornsby you just won The Duke at the American Jazz Awards! Can you comment on your feelings now! Thank you.

  16. J.... B....

Great song, awesome band! Bruce can turn on a dime musically, and his band stays right with him. Amazing!

  19. g.... ....

I miss the old noisemakers sssssoooo much! SSSSOOOONNNNNNYYYY

  20. g.... ....

Sounds stupid but when I heard this for the first time after it came out~ I ran up into my garage and wrote it the best I could on both sides of my canoe bow! ~ironically I was on a cyclone class ship in the Navy~ and when I buy my lake Erie~ Niagara river boat, guess what I'm naming it? ??

    g.... ....

+gregoir Hey great story there. Bruce would be proud I'm sure. Sail On....

    g.... ....

    +gregsbest thanks bro!

    g.... ....

Robert Hunter, one of the best songwriters of all time.

    M.... ....

Holy shit! I didn't realize he wrote the lyrics for this one. Breathtaking song.

    M.... ....

Unmistakably a Hunter-penned tune and perfect for Hornsby.

  23. D.... G....

Has his voice changed or am I just imagining ? Good jams !!!

    D.... G....

his voice has changed very little in 30+ years.

    D.... G....

    @Terry Poirier
    I agree.

    D.... G....

Dan Godwin : Totally different from the “RANGE” days both in the nature of his writing and voice! Don’t know how I feel about the “new BH” sounds (?!) I still prefer the “RANGE”....there, I said it.. lone dissenter!

  24. B.... ....

Also a wonderful piece of music. Thank you many times.

  25. a.... ....

Just look at the intensity of the other musicians.  I've been to many BH concerts and it always amazes me to see how his band stare at him like birds of prey.  They will routinely change tempo, dynamics and key with just the slightest raise of Bruce's eyebrows or chin.  Spectacularly tight.  Truly a musician's musician-- all of them!

    a.... ....

Especially the mighty JT on synth. Ledge!!!

    a.... ....

    Yep. Magic.

    a.... ....

lways a great show. Sonny, the drummer is explosive!!!!

  26. M.... M....

    I like at 2 minutes 28

  27. B.... S....

LEGEND... I mean one of the greats

  28. B.... S....

    Bruce is a legend

  29. a.... ....

    Awesome music.

  30. a.... ....

    Sonny Emory on drums!

  31. S.... T....

he is aging but he is becoming more delicious like the old wine

  32. A.... J....

why is it showing "rhianna " on my screeno?

  33. S.... B....

It's a MIDI wind controller. I believe Bobby plays Yamaha wind controllers.

  35. G.... T....

That's a soprano sax played by Bobby Read

  36. a.... ....

Seriously? How can somebody post a thumbs down? This band is magnificent in every way.

  37. M.... L....

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what is that woodwind thingy the guy behind Bruce is playing?

...also, this song kicks ass. :3

  38. l.... ....

This crowd needs to stand the fuck up.

    l.... ....

his shows mostly are the sitdown crowds...specially in the soft seat theaters.

    l.... ....

And the best part is, everyone shuts up and listens to the music. It's fantastic!

  39. g.... ....

Another weird comment... i served in the navy on a CYCLONE class ship named the U.S.S. SIROCCO..I plan onbuying a walleye boat or nice 17 ft. open bow boat w/in a year or 2 DEFINATELY NAMING IT"CYCLONE" OR B.H CYCLONE!

  40. S.... K....

What an incredible group of musicians. It's music like this that inspires me to keep practicing. Much love!

Bruce your music is fantastic!!! every days listen your music, I need a favor, send me the song MANDOLIN RAIN please!!!
    I LOVED

  53. J.... S....

the whole cd kicks ass, but CYCLONE is just incredible! this song supplanted WHITE WHEELED LIMOSINE as my fav BH song. he's just brilliant!

    J.... S....

Jack Saller, have you heard his full blown Bluegrass version of White Wheeled Limosine with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder? They recorded it a couple of years ago on a live album...by far my favorite version of all!

  54. d.... h....

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Bruce Hornsby, and if u think this is incredible, u should see him live

  55. n.... ....

    Bruce Hornsby is the truth!

  56. t.... ....

Man......wow! I gotta see this guy again soon. His rythym section (which I guess includes him) LAYS......IT........DOWN.

  57. m.... ....

An eerie classic! Hornsby pulls it off flawlessly. His voice has just the right amount of pathos for the arch, sad lyrics and melody.

Leave it to Hunter to catch the perfect mood in the lyrics. The line "...just can't see so well with my fading eyes..." I mean, MAN! That's powerful and wistful, totally evoking the feeling the song sets up.

    Just perfect.

  58. D.... L....

@jdsong1 Check out the Internet Live Music Archive. Bruce is pretty generous when it comes to taping live gigs.

  59. M.... G....

his singing sounds just like Sting (the voice and the way how to sing)

  60. s.... m....

Where can I get this live verson on mp3? Love it!!

  61. s.... m....

Where do you get this verson on MP3? I like the live verson best. Is there somewhere that has the live verson?

    s.... m....

stuart m - His website has a lot of free downloads from his shows, or you can download this video and rip the MP3.

  62. O.... K....

This is one of the best songs Bruce has ever written, and given the fact that Hunter wrote the lyrics. Amazing... Transcendent.

  63. L.... S....

my 2nd favorite musician all time.....

  64. N.... ....

    @stiflyon Huh?

  65. b.... ....

I've been listening to Bruce for 20 years. The first 3 albums with The Range is great, so is his 2 first solo albums, (later i think he's been experimenting a little bit too much). This song and "Continents Drift" from the new album "Levitate" is Bruce at his best. I love the sound image he gets, so dynamic and wide, he's a great musician!!
