Bruce Hornsby - Across The River Lyrics
Well, she moved back around here
Thirty-five weeks ago today
Oh, down the lane
Well, at night she walks on the banks
And how she left one day
She left with a driven look in her eyes
Came back around with it still inside
They said give it some time
And you'll forget about it too
We know they always do
Well, I know some fine day
You will find your way
Row down slow
There's a long way to go
Across the river, across the river
She was proud and so strong
But she tried not to listen to idle talk
Downtown where she walked
Well, they sit around and they say
That she came back with her tail between her legs
Like they always said she would
Well, I hear it's better on the other side
They say you'll never do it so don't even try
Well, you may be beaten down with your closed mind
But don't try to make it mine
Well, I know some fine day
You will find your way
Across the river, across the river
Row down slow
There's a long way to go
Across the river, across the river
"Your wild days are through"
Is what they said
I dreamed she came, and I went down
And I walked where she led
Standing on the shore
She looks to the west with a look of longing
To where the grass seems greener
Well, there's a hard and distant prize
It probably won't happen but I think I'll try
Well, even if it doesn't happen for me
It still beats hanging around here
Well, I know some fine day
You will find your way
Across the river, across the river
Row down slow
There's a long, long way to go
Across the river, across the river

Bruce Hornsby Across The River Comments
Bruce though I've never met him, I lived in the same part of the country as he. Williamsburg/Tidewater area of Virginia, he is a down to earth, humble man. He never left his home of Williamsburg even during his fame. All the music he makes has its roots in his home, the people, and the lives they live. I spent 9 + years there, some at the height of his fame.
Perfect 👌👍👍
This is music
This whole album is great! This song is hauntingly beautiful. Tells a great story.
Wefere??<3
It's a mystery to me why Bruce hornsby isn't as famous as Billy Joel or elton John the he has a superb voice and is an accomplished musician excellent song writer its just not fair
He looks really handsome in this video, and I agree that he never received the attention he should have. He wrote The end of the Innocence and gave it to Don Henley
I still long to get across that damn metaphorical river. That’s the essence of hope.
Just remembered this song today💞 it's been years since I've heard it.....so beautiful.
2:31 Jerry Garcia on guitar.
Yes that was Jerry Garcia opening with the guitar solo...
Outstanding band , brilliant song writing
SUBLIME!!
River soul song, I was born by the Sava river and Danube river here in Serbian capital Belgrade
The right country band could probably make this a top 40 hit.
In french, I would say "cérébral ". What the"intellect" can create. It's so amazing, the way you feel, listening. I feel so fortunate having lived the 90ies. I would like to thank mr Hornsby in person. Life is a journey and art helps going.
Not saying anything, with this song ? I just like it .👍👍❤💕👍👍
Heard this on Virgin 1215 in the late 1990s.
*Mi è capitato di leggere, dear Bruce, che hai collaborato in passato con un Gruppo che adoro : i CCR, scrivendo una canzone con Loro e, per questo, desidero ringraziarTi e complimentarmi. Cari saluti da Roma!*
The best part is my daughters mother just said ..put your headphones on...and she loves this song....she didn't think about the terrible singing unaccompanied by the real song...FAIL
This song is insanely good
John Mayer is the Bruce Hornsby using guitar and Bruce was/is the ancient John from piano
Totally under rated artist...great song writer and musician
Hands down the best Pianist in RocknRoll....Full Stop.
I can smell John Mellencamp since the producer is Don Gehman.
I have always loved Bruce Hornsby's music. But, this song has a special meaning to me. At the time this album was released, I was living in southern Indiana, about 30 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. Anyone who knows this area will tell you that this particular section of the Ohio River that separates Indiana from Kentucky is one of the most fierce, yet awe-inspiring in it's existence. The width of the river itself is nearly a mile, so whenever you had to cross there were several reinforced bridges that connected both sides. One day, I was riding with my Dad back from a specialists appointment in Louisville, and this song came on the radio. Just as we began our trek across the bridge, the chorus kicked in. I sat there and looked out across the water and for the first time, saw it's beauty and power and found myself wiping away the tears. To this day, I hear this song, and I smile because it takes me back to a much simpler and innocent time. Thus, the power of music.
I heard this song for the first time on a long ride home from seeing my girlfriend from NAU 1995...
Still Brings back memories!!!
I just love that strong chorus that comes in...as only musicians like this are able to do. Brilliant!
Love this song

I have had many "across the river" moments in my life. I totally understand the concept of this video.
2:06. Hayes St Bridge in San Antonio Texas
Remember to have your 2 cents to pay the ferryman once you cross that river.
It's always fun to see Bruce's family members doing cameos in his videos.
I love this song. Thank you Bruce Hornsby.
Hands down, this is Hornsby's best song. Love it.
I keep coming back to this song if I'm in the mood for The Range. I don't know if it's the lyrics, the piano or whatever else. It's my favorite song by the band and I wish my childhood had been populated with music like this.
AWESOME JERRY, AWESOME BRUCE
He and Elton John are the best pianists in pop music
This song so revelent now
Perfect rim clicks
Always loved the music of Bruce Hornsby...this is my favorite!
I ain't got long til I'll be across the river with my dad and grandads . And I'm fine with it. God damn beautiful song
William Faulkner..................
Mid 80s and I was in the prime of life with this music boosting me on, and I still dance away to it today
Is that cherry garcia on guitar?? Sure sounds like him ;) lol
bruce is awesome
Hornsby single handedly created the "Virginia Sound". This song will always remind me of my times in Williamsburg. For all of the accolades he receives, I still think he is one of the most underrated musicians of the last forty years.
🇧🇷🙂👍 Legal PARABÉNS Muito BOM 🎼👏🎼☝🎼👏🎼👏🎼👏🎼👏🎼👏👍
great song writer
For you, Liz. You'll make it.
awesome song
Only a girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and rose above her station in life understands this song. This girl did...and this tune is one of my faves.
Just don't like it...the multiple commercials that now play before the song is played. It was worth the wait...great tune.
awesome
Great tune i grooved to, in very scary & sad times, on a very long bunch-o-rivers. ty♡
I LOVE LOVE LOVE BRUCE HORNSBY!! I NEVER HEARD THIS ONE TILL NOW??
What’s the model : actresses name in this video.
RIP Jerry!!!
subtle then powerful...guitar rocks!....then subtle...and crescendo again....then falls off ...old school craftsmanship here!
i love songs that have a haunting feel to them. Everything Bruce Hornsby did has that quality, but this song over all the others has that vibe for me. So full of longing, sadness, hope and redemption in this tune. Incredible.
GREAT SONG!! Just love it.
I love Bruce
I heard this song in a Publix grocery store and it made me feel good. It improved my mood.
This is the most underrated musician of all time...god damn this dude is great
Agreed, Jay.
That's why I loved the 80's, the songs had passion. The first time I heard this song was when I was a teen.
I listened to this song on armed forces radio korea when it came out in 1990.you just dont get music like this today.
Hornsby and the Range developed what is considered the "Virginia Sound", a style which is unique and immediately recognizable. A truly wonderful and distinctly American genre of music.
I loved the years Hornsby was with The Dead. I wish he would have stayed on permanently. And it's too bad Jerry couldn't be in this video.
Worlds Greatest Dad brought me here. RIPRW.

Wonderfull music that is I like to listen always the good melody of Bruce
heard this playing in a Publix grocery store in Orlando today...had to come find it and listen again...thanks Bruce and the guys!
Brice Hornsby is a legend his music will never be forgotten by me
I had this tune stuck in my head today and had no idea who sang it and finally stumbled across it. Damn I'm good haha!
Bruce Springsteen < Bruce Hornsby
Haunting AND powerful in equal measure. Few, if any do it better than Bruce Hornsby and the Range.
[Titus 2:13] "looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,"
Jerry on lead ⚡️💫✨
Have a great knight
Love ya
I hadn't thought of this song in years until I heard it again in my local supermarket a few days ago. How could I ever have forgotten it?
Right? So slick...
Such beautiful music
powerful song
I haven’t heard this song is a loooooooooooong time.
Didn’t realize it was released the year I graduated high school, Christ, nearly 30 years ago.
Try FANTASTIC Del.....Oh yeh, that's it!
Really fantasic piece of music, so beautifully written and performed, rely on BH and The Range to come up with a great "story" song.
As for the melody, fabulous!!
Flávio Venturini.
