Bruce Cockburn - It Came Upon The Midnight Clear Lyrics
It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold
Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing
Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wings
And ever o'er its Babel sounds
Yet with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong
And man at war with man hears not
The love song which they bring
O hush the noise ye men of strife
And hear the angels sing
And ye, beneath life's crushing load
Whose forms are bending low
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow
Take heart for comfort, love, and hope
Come swiftly on the wing
O rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing
For lo the days are hastening
By prophet bards fortold
When with the ever circling years
Comes round the age of gold
When peace shall o'er all the earth
Its ancient splendours lay
And the whole world give back the song
Which now the angels sing

Bruce Cockburn It Came Upon The Midnight Clear Comments
A true Canadian icon: brilliant guitarist and lyricist, keeping it real.
I used to work in Family Christian Stores when this album came out and I recall receiving it and displaying it and playing it. We got a notice from Corporate Office couple days later to pull it because of Bruce's political stances. Hypocrites had no problems carrying Rush Limbaugh and George W Bush's books. I gave myself a restraining order to myself as if I get 50 yards from a FBS, I will light a match and burn the store down.
It's not always easy to do the right thing. But, you're still shining a light for Bruce's artistry and true Christmas spirit. Peace.
Tried to share this on my website blog and got inundated with ads. Bloody youtube!
My favourite Christmas album of all time! Bruce, who is a Christian, took what is real and didn't dumb down the whole season.Beautiful album!!!
What a magical "medieval" setting of an old favourite! It's interesting to note that this is a poem written by Edmund Sears, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Lancaster, Massachusetts. The year was 1849. And Bruce has made it no less meaningful today. Would that we take the time to hear the angels sing.
