Brownsville Station - The Red Back Spider Lyrics

There was a red back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night
I didn't see him in the dark
But, boy, I felt his bite
I jumped high into the air
And when I hit the ground
That crafty red back spider
Was nowhere to be found

Well, I rushed into the missus
Told her just where I'd been bit
She grabbed the cutthroat razorblade
And I nearly had a fit
I said, forget what's on your mind
Call the doctor, please
Cause I got a feeling that your cure
Is worse than the disease

There was a red back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night
I didn't see him in the dark
But, boy, I felt his bite
Now I'm here in the hospital
A sad and sorry plight
And I curse the red back spider
On the toilet seat last night
(Red back spider)

Well, I can't lay down
I can't sit up
I don't know what to do
All the nurses think it's funny
But that's not my point of view
I tell you, it's embarassing
And that's to say the least
That I'm too sick to eat a bite
While the spider had a feast
(No good spider)

And when I get back home again
I'll tell you what I'll do
I'll make that red back suffer
For the pain I'm going through
I've had so many needles
That I'm looking like a sieve
I promise you that spider
Hasn't very long to live
(Red back spider)

There was a red back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night
I didn't see him in the dark
But, boy, I felt his bite
Now I'm here in the hospital
A sad and sorry plight
And I cursed the red back spider
On the toilet seat last night

Red back spider
That no good spider
Red back spider

Where are you?
(Red back spider)
What are you doing?
(That no good spider)
Get away from me!
I don't need you!
(Red back spider)
Good Lord!
(That no good spider)
(Red back spider)
(That no good spider)
Get that old red back spider away from me!
I don't need him!
Oh, yeah!

On this day in 1972 {December 30th} Brownsville Station appeared in concert* at the Ohio Theater in Columbus, Ohio...
At the time the Ann Arbor, MI quartet's "The Red Back Spider" was at #99 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; the following day it would peak at #96 and that was also its last week on the chart...
Exactly one year later on December 30th, 1973 their "Smokin' in the Boy's Room" was at #6 on the Top 100; two weeks later it would peak at #3 for one week...
    * The concert's opening act was a young 23 year-old rocker from New Jersey named Bruce Springsteen...

sauquoit13456 - You make a great point regarding what the opening slot used to mean. If you look at the amount of superstars that opened shows that many forgot but others remember with laser focus, it shouldn't be a surprise that they became such a large part of your musical library. The bands that Really, Truly cemented their spot in the annals of Live Rock Legend were the ones that took solid, untapped talent out on the road with them.

Of course, since the industry has changed so much since the advent of the 'Net, some of the agreements from the "Early Days" of live rock touring seem quaint now. That shouldn't be something anyone tries to diplomatically dodge.

For anyone (myself included) that was a Cheap Fan from the beginning, hearing that their record label had to *PAY $1,000* for opening a given show only serves to reinforce the cleverness of giving the people what they want.

I'm not a particularly huge Springsteen fan, but he probably would have impressed me.

Been a fan of this band for decades but never did hear this one. Now I know what I haven't missed all these years. :-D

    o.... ....

It was a non-LP, 45-only single that was released in between their first
two Big Tree albums, A NIGHT ON THE TOWN (1972) and YEAH ! (1973).
It was also their first single to chart, peaking at #96 in early January, 1973.
