Browne, Jackson - Standing In The Breach Lyrics

And though the earth may tremble and our foundations crack
We will all assemble and we will build them back
And rush to save the lives remaining still within our reach
And try to put our world together standing in the breach

So many live in poverty while others live as kings
Though some may find peace
In the acceptance of all that living brings
I will never understand however they've prepared
How one life may be struck down and another life be spared

And though the earth may tremble and cast our works aside
And though our efforts resemble the fluctuating tide
We rise and fall with the trust and belief
That love redeems us each
And bend our backs and hearts together standing in the breach

You don't know why it's such a far cry
From the world this world could be
You don't know why but you still try
For the world you wish to see
You don't know how it will happen now
After all that's come undone
But you know the change the world needs now
Is there, in everyone

The unpaid debts of history
The open wounds of time
The laws of human nature always tugging from behind
I want to think that the earth can heal
And that people might still learn
How to meet this world's true challenges
And that the course we're on could turn

And though the earth may tremble and the oceans pitch and rise
We will all assemble and we will lift our eyes
To the tasks that we know lie before us
And the power our prayers beseech
And cast our souls into the heavens, standing in the breach

You don't know why it's such a far cry
From the world this world could be
You don't know why but you still try
For the world you wish to see
You don't know how it's going to happen now
After all that's come undone
And you know the world you're waiting for may not come
No it may not come
But you know the change the world needs now
Is there, in everyone

Great music! Thanks. You have always inspired me with your words of wisdom and your beautiful music.

I had the extreme pleasure of chatting with Jackson at a meet and greet after a charity benefit concert in Richmond CA. When I told him that his music has been the soundtrack to my life (and by association, my children’s lives!) and that I could remember exactly where I was at and what I was doing the first time I heard a new song called “Doctor My Eyes”, he said “really!??” Like I might be the only person out there whose lives he has profoundly touched. Yeah right! Lol!! He and I are the same age and I sincerely hope that he’s still making music when I pass, because I’m not sure that I could face a world where there was no Clyde Jackson Browne.

  5. a.... m....

An anthem for the times we live in. No one else says it like Jackson does.

Holy shit. This guy still has some talent left despite being a hundred years old. He's still good in concert, too. Too bad Springsteen gets all the attention.

    R.... D....

He isn't a hundred, thank you.

    R.... D....

Man, son, you have made a dynamic remark......one that transcends 20 years of listening . Man, son....(figure of speech for me) I sadly agree, with a smile towards Mr. Browne.

    R.... D....

( reply to "Person Who Likes Guinea Pigs")
    ++++++

    S.... H....

No...you might just be raped by one of your shiny new immigrants (don't pretend it's not a possibility)...here, in the USA our founders were wise enough to assert that the weak have a right to protect themselves from the strong - w/ firearms...

    S.... H....

Every day, 19 American children shoot themselves or someone else with a firearm. Everyday. Terrorism looks like a tiny problem compared to this.
Every year 10,000 Americans shoot other Americans! Every year! What does terrorism kill in the U.S.?
    3000 + roughly 17 per year for 16 years...
    3272

    Compared to Americans killing Americans...
    ~160,000
    Since 2001.
Jackson Browne realizes the problem, so do I.

  17. j.... t....

I like this album a lot!

  18. J.... P....

no one is going anywhere until we all do, personal consumption doesn't lead to happiness, until everyone is out of chains we are all still in chains, what we need now more than a technological revolution is a human one. If a day comes when we rise as one to put down oppression of any kind, economic, social, etc. then thedreams that were reborn in the seventies will arise. Abraham, martin, and john

  19. M.... S....

‘You know the change the world needs now is there in everyone.’ Jackson Brown, 2014

  20. L.... M....

Jackson , has given to many parts of the world in his life time ! What are you doing?

  21. D.... C....

some live in poverty, some live like kings. love ya JB, but you giving all those concert proceeds to nepal? lol #comeonnow

    D.... C....

+Daren Copely, proceeds? you mean people buy enough non - Beyonce music to even cover production and touring costs for a record like this?

    D.... C....

+Daren Copely I don't get people like you. You suffering from some sort of middle American guilt syndrome? You don't love the man if you don't get the message.

    D.... C....

Jackson Browne does plenty of benefit concerts. I’ve seen him about a dozen times, and half were benefits.

  22. E.... M....

Love it!!  Just like I love everything Jackson has ever done!!!  There is not another who can write and sing these songs, as he does...

    E.... M....

Erika, why have Political Songs (a form that reaches the Soul of Humanity) not been able to affect lasting positive change in American Society? (despite the many Musical advocates for a a better America & World, from Pete Seeger to Jackson Browne- over 50 years- and War, Poverty, Hate, & Nationalism have eclipsed Peace & Economic-Social Justice). do Words of Compassion & Unity matter to
most Americans or is it being
ignored/ridiculed for its "radical" (actually, Humane & Moral) Message? when will Society realize the need to stop letting Corruption, Bigotry, Sexism, Militaristic fake "patriotism", & selfishness rule, with impunity? (as Millions suffer from Injustices and the Environment is desecrated/plundered for those "King$" of Industry & Finance!)

    E.... M....

    I agree 100% Erika

  23. J.... M....

A song for Nepal too.... A song for hope, a song for strength, a song for Faith...The world needs to hear more of Jackson's music

    J.... M....

    absolutely

  24. T.... S....

I love You Jackson Brown. You are an absolutely beautiful human and you are very special to me. Thank you for all you are and do.

  25. R.... G....

    Niizhishin!  Beautiful and important message.

  26. H.... C....

    Excellent album

  27. y.... k....

gewoon weer eens een echt jackson browne album...
    lekkurrrrr

  28. I.... ....

Outstanding album. Every track a winner! Seen him live in Glasgow 3 weeks ago and he was totally bloody awesome!

  29. P.... G....

It's about the earthquake in Haiti, got no tits or ass wriggling about, just really hard hitting words. Where is our music going to go when songwriters like this are gone. Listen hard while you can.

    P.... G....

it's about everything wealth inequality, in general, as well. xx

    P.... G....

Yeah, Jackson's got a lot more than I do...if I list my P.O. Box do you think he'll send some of his to me?

  30. s.... ....

Pedagogical, preachy, too-obvious = ultimately uninspiring.

  31. b.... ....

This could have been on the Hold Out album!

  32. A.... S....

Jackson has saved my broken soul.

    A.... S....

You need a lil' Rolling Stones up in ya.  ;)

  33. W.... H....

    Classic Browne.

  34. M.... R....

A great song for these times, JACKSON BROWNE is one of the best songwriters

  35. E.... M....

Yes, of course, he's still got it...and he always will have it. Love the new record Jackson!

  36. D.... S....

Pretty tune, but it's hard for me to understand what words he's singing. I'll have to see if I can find the lyrics online and then listen again.

    D.... S....

Although the Earth may tremble and our foundation crack,
We are all assembled and we will build them back.
And let's just say the lives remain and held within our reach.
Try to put our world together, standing in the breach.
So many live in poverty while others live like Kings.
Though some may find peace and acceptance in all that living brings.

I will never understand, how ever they've prepared,
How one life is struck down and another life is spared.
Though the earth may tremble and cast our work aside,
Though their efforts resembled the fluctuations of time.
We rise and fall with the trust and belief and love redeems our seed.
And our backs and the hearts together, standing in the breech.

    You don't know why,
It's such a far cry, in what this world could be.
    You don't know why,
But you still try for the world you wish to see.
You don't know how, it will happen now after all that's come undone.
But you know the change that the world needs now, is there in everyone.

The unpaid debts of history, the open wounds of time,
The laws of Human Nature always tugging from behind.
I want to think that the earth can heal and the people might still learn,
How to meet this world's true challenges and if it costs their own can turn.

Though the earth may tremble and the ocean's pitching arrives,
We are all assembled. And we will lift our eyes
To the tasks that we know lie before us and the power of our press besieged,
And lift our souls into the Heavens, standing in the breach.

    You don't know why,
It's such a far cry from what this world can be.
    You don't know why,
But you still try for the world you wish to see.
    You don't know how,
    It will happen now.
    For all that's come undone.
But you know the changes the world needs now is there in everyone.

Classic Jackson, isn't it? If the rest of the album is as strong as this, I'll certainly be picking up a copy.

    D.... F....

    Walls and Doors equally excellent.

    D.... F....

@rnnnmt Beatiful album isn't it runningonempty

    D.... F....

@James Miles It sure is. I'm still trying to get a feel for the album as a whole - I already knew some of the songs - they are not new - so it's a struggle, but a nice struggle!

    D.... F....

+David Flaherty  Well worth it. The man is a songwriter with hardly a peer
