Browne, Jackson - Going Down To Cuba Lyrics

Sometimes I get to feeling low
Wish I could just pick up and go somewhere new
Change my point of view
Maybe somewhere I don't know
Toss the idea to and fro
Not sure what makes it come and go
There it is again: sweet music on the wind
Over the Gulf of Mexico

I'm going to down to Cuba someday soon
Following that Caribbean moon
It's been too long since I've been there
I'm going down to Cuba with my friends
Down where the rhythm never ends
Where women wear gardenias in their hair

People will tell you it's not easy
You're not supposed to go, they say
They say that Cuba is the enemy
I'm going down there anyway

I'm going down to Cuba to see my friends
Down where the rhythm never ends
No problem is too difficult to solve
Yeah times are tough down there it's true
But you know they're going to make it through
They make such continuous use of the verb to resolve
They've got to deal with that embargo
Enough to drive any country insane
They might not know the things you and I know
They do know what to do in a hurricane
Maybe I'll go through Mexico
Old Jesse Helms don't have to know
Anyway all the allies of the USA
Travel to Cuba everyday

I'm going down to Cuba to see my friends
Down where the rhythm never ends
Where by comparison my trouble will just unravel
I'm North American, you know
Don't like to hear where I can't go
Free people will insist on the freedom to travel

I'm going to drink the rum mojito
And walk out on the Malecon
In one hand a Monte Cristo
And in the other an ice cream cone

I'm going down to Cuba with my band
We're going to formulate a plan
Whereby we obtain that cultural permission

If I told you once I told you thrice
It'll put a smile on your face to see a Chevrolet with a Soviet transmission
I bet the country cast a spell
And there are things I think of still
Like the beauty of that woman that spoke to me
In the Hotel Nacional

I'm gonna book my flight today
I'm definitely on my way
Just hold my place and I'll get back in the race
And I'm back in the USA

"Where women wear Gardenias in their hair".

  2. b.... ....

The Cuban regime has executed thousands of political enemies...so there's that...

Love this song but cannot stomach that background singer with her wannabe Beyonce voice crooning about Cuban drinks. (ohhhh mojitoooo) It just doesn't fit and is so distracting. She sounds like she's dying the little death while singing if you know what I mean. Bring back Rosemary or better yet Valerie! Both of those ladies understood the meaning of backing up an artist and not making it about them.

  4. S.... V....

President Obama is singing this song today, March 20, 2016.

He lives in a very big house, flies in very expensive planes, leaves a huge carbon footprint and protests the life he lives.  Do as he sings not as he does.  I can't stand whiners like Jackson Browne.  When one fails to accomplish anything significant or "new" in music just find your niche by protesting.  Browne is so over-rated...as are all hypocritical environmentalist.  They love to live large in their big homes and swimming pools and big cars but they simply can't stand when someone else does.

    J.... R....

Most planes are expensive - it's the seats which count!

Actually you're wrong. Jackson has lived off the grid for years. He's got a big ranch (true) that runs solely on solar and wind power. Drives an electric car, doesn't allow plastic bottles on his tours, reduces plastic use in life and work. He does more for the environment than most. Not to mention all the benefit shows he plays for environmental causes. Some things are unavoidable like having to take planes to travel overseas for work but he makes up for it in other ways. Check out the vid about JB being off grid. He's one of the few who is really not a hypocrite.

    You can't refute Reed's points...

    J.... R....

He lives off the grid. Read up.

    This Guy is an ASS-Hat!!!!

    Ah, the whining protestor.

    J.... R....

Your cynicism is misplaced. Being able to protest is what makes America great. Don't you realize that the founding fathers were really just protesters who got shit done? It's the American way. And no it's not a strictly liberal practice. Lots of conservatives protest also.

"he's the best. ever. to me & for me. there will always be critics and haters - it's life, human nature... but this cat's the epitome of what a survivor is. innate genius talent. peace, love and understanding - alohas y'all."

It was nice to hear this song and re-discover Jackson Browne again in decades.  I'm traveling to Cuba in a few days with a photographic group on the People-to-People program (that's still legal).  It'll be an interesting trip now after President Obama has announced a way forward for better relations in the future.  I hope the dysfuntional Congress ends the embargo.  It certainly hasn't changed the leadership.  It has certainly made the lives of everyday Cubans more difficult and we've never had a problem with them.  My group may be one of the last to have to travel on the People-to-People VISAs.  I'm looking forward to it.  Thank you Jackson Browne for such a great song.

@Roland Penttila "It has certainly made the lives of everyday Cubans more difficult"...
Most countries do not embargo Cuba. So they can import any/all products necessary.
"we've never had a problem with them"...
Nuclear weapons targeting USA cities was No Problem???Short memory homeboy..
