There are a lot of moments in my life this song would fit perfectly into, sad yet true

I lost my grandfather today, and somehow a song like this takes on new life. It is of great sorrow that we as humans feel so strongly that it isn't masculine to show our feelings. It starts innocent enough, but over time the veil to your soul grows thicker and stronger, until it becomes it becomes an impenetrable wall, far stronger than you ever could have ever imagined.

Then, suddenly, the entire weight of the wall falls on you.... causing pain far worse than that which it was constructed to protect you from. You realize in an instant how stupid you are. Mortality is something that cannot be procrastinated.

If the younger version of me is out there reading this, you'd be wise to learn that it isn't manly to wall your feelings off from the world.... it's cowardice. Find the courage to show those around you how much they matter, for there is no guarantee they are there tomorrow. Your son, your daughter. Your mother, your father. Your sister, your brother. Someday, all return to dust.

The "conversation" isn't quite the same as you kneel in front of their granite memory wondering just where you went wrong.

This actually almost feels like a future me is talking... Considering how you state EXACTLY how I feel right now with my emotions. It's just hard for me to actually tell everything, being I've been an introvert most of my life, as well as actually trying to tell everyone something that Society often jokes about; to the point to where you feel like you have to hide it in order to survive. I know one day I'll have to confess, but this means that I also don't have as much time as I may think to build up the courage.

I guess I just... I just kind of skipped the rebellious years, with my situation kind of forcing me to mature faster than I should. Which I can see now is starting to have some bad effects... mainly psychologically. Thank you for writing this Benjamin... these words can definitely help a vast amount of others in a similar state to what you've experienced. I know it has told me a lot. I just need to fix my own cowardice and procrastination, otherwise it might be worse than just simply facing your fears. It would be facing your regrets.

Yekcvke - It is unfortunate that society has a social stigma that teaches boys it isn't manly to show emotions. For boys/men who are sensitive emotionally (the percentage is much higher than you'd imagine) this "forced" rejection of their natural emotions ultimately leads to cognitive dissonance. In a nutshell, this means that your actions don't match your beliefs.....and over time this will have profound psychological consequences. If you're an introvert, as I am, I would highly recommend these two books. They will help you find the courage to be yourself when society says "yourself isn't good enough".

If you only get one, definitely get Daring Greatly. The second book is especially for introverts, and how to succeed as such in a society that idolizes extroversion.

Benjamin Lane I'm so glad someone finally says it. I've told my friends younger than me, don't be afraid to show your emotions. Be yourself, be vulnerable, it doesn't make you a man to hide your emotions and act like a machine. no. A real man isn't afraid to show his emotions, to show his soft side. Even someone like me who struggles to let myself show emotions due to severe social anxiety, I understand that. I try every day to remember that it's okay to show my emotions. to let myself feel. I'm 19 and I run a group in discord for a team I've put together in a game. I never expected to make friends there, but I have. I've made some great friends there. I'm the oldest in the group, by quite a bit. The next oldest member just recently turned 16. These guys, they all look up to me for life advice. I love to act as a mentor for some, because when I can help someone else is when I truly feel alive. When I truly feel like I'm doing what I'm meant to be doing. There are 20 other members in this group. their ages range from an eleven year old to a sixteen year old, with most falling in the 13/14 year old age group. One of the things I've said most often is "Don't let anyone tell you it's not manly to show your sensitive side. to show your emotions. It's one of the MOST manly things you can do. It's something that only a _real_ man can do. Don't be afraid of emotions. Embrace them." And several seem to have taken my advice. I truly believed I've helped many of them. Unfortunately there are a couple in the group who I fear it's already too late for. I won't stop trying though. I'll always try to break through and help them too. Anyway, enough rambling. I really appreciate your comment, And I'm so sorry you lost your grandpa. I hope things have gotten better for you since you posted this
