Bright Eyes - Sunrise, Sunset Lyrics

Sunrise, sunset.
Sunrise, sunset.
Swiftly go the days.
Sunrise, sunset.
You wake up, then you undress.
It always is the same.
The sunrise and the sunsets.
You are lying while you confess, keep trying to explain.
The sunrise and the sunsets
You realize then you forget what you've been trying to retain.
But everybody knows that it is all about the things
That get stuck inside of your head,
Like the songs your roommate sings
Or a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed.
She raised her hands in the air, asked you,
When was the last time you looked in the mirror?
Cause you've changed.
Yeah, you've changed.
Sunrises, sunsets.
You're hopeful then you regret.
The circle never breaks.
With a sunrise and a sunset there's a change of heart or address.
Is there nothing that remains?
For a sunrise or a sunset.
You're manic or you're depressed.
Will you ever feel ok?
For a sunrise or a sunset, your lover is an actress.
Did you really think she'd stay?
For a sunrise or a sunset.
You're either coming or you just left but you're always on the way.
Towards a sunrise or a sunset, a scribble or a sonnet.
They are really just the same.
To the sunrise and the sunset.
The master and his servant have exactly the same fate.
It's a sunrise and a sunset.
From a cradle to a casket.
There is no way to escape.
The sunrise and the sunset.
Hold your sadness like a puppet, keep putting on the play.
But everything you do is leading to the point
Where you just won't know what to do.
And at that moment you may laugh
But there is someone there who will be laughing louder than you.
So it's true, the trick is complete.
Become everything you said you never would be.
You're a fool! You're a fool!
Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset.
Sunrise and the sunsets.
Sunrise, sunset, sunrises, sunsets.
Sunrise and the sunsets.
Sunrise, sunset.
Go home to your apartment
And put the cassette in the tape deck and let that fever play.
Sunrise, sunset.
Where are you Arienette?
Where are you Arienette?

  3. jane doe

aaaaw my high school angst on blast. except i was afraid of those emotions and could never explore them in song until many years later. i stuck to 'bowl of oranges'.

  4. Dark Entries

2004: Memories of nights in LA and OC. Sitting passenger in my friends' cars. Smoking cigarettes. Being a teenager.

  5. Reece Jon Osborne

This song is one of the ones that gets me really angry, but I'd rather be angry and indignant than depressed and crying.

  6. Samantha

Manic depression is a cruel disorder. Show love to your bipolar friends and family we need it

  7. zzkpeaceufo

This song makes my heart bleed and my soul ache.... In a good way lol

  8. best music

Been forever. Reminds me of elliot Smith meets isaac brock

  9. Human Evolution

Cradle to the casket. Dopest line ever.

  10. Cody Bur

I'm trying to think of tattoo ideas that can convey the ideas of this song. Obviously, the sunrise sunset part, but I need that to somehow portray the meaning so it doesn't come across as just a generic tattoo. Any ideas?

  11. G D

"Go home to your apartment and put in a cassette"...Bright Eyes
"Go home and lead a quiet life"...Bob Dylan

  12. Tm87Mills 87

    My lover was an actress.

  13. Amna

    this song is slightly disturbing

  14. Crystal Lynn

This song was randomly in my mind

  15. Bryce

    RIP Dylan🌹

  16. Joji Miller

basically I sub to anyone with bright eyes on their channel

  17. Nerd Skywalker

"Your lover is an actress did you really think she'd stay"
lmao, I just watched Spiderman 3

  18. rordun1232

    black mirror

  19. Luzul Lapis

sunrise sunset from a cradle to a casket there's nowhere to escape...

    James Murphy

    no way, not nowhere

  20. Brandy Clabo

    This song haunts my dreams

  21. kayla ingvardsen

    let that fever play

  22. TRUEiMPROrecords

One of the best albums ever. The honest D.I.Y. magick of "Letting Off The Happiness" given wings and captured beautifully. All the early recordings and E.P.s are gold. Saddle Creek rec. did an amazing job with these early records, and Conor Oberst is a legend, in there with the likes of Daniel Johnston and Jeff Magnum.

    brennen spice

Absolutely agreed, certainly up there with Elliot smith as well.

  23. veritas1007

Conor was a poet but a downright horrible musician

    Kate The Great

you must be joking. lyrics were bis forte but he was not a bad musician by any means.

    Nickolas Garcia

That's what makes it great he doesn't have a polished voice you can feel the emotion

  24. Dan Shaffer

The master and the servant have exactly the same fate...

    Steven Chavez

Never liked that line, personally. Just feels as though it’s something a teenager writes when they first start really thinking about the fact everyone’s gonna die. Still a beautiful song. Much better than anything I could ever do. Doesn’t mean I have no right to speak my mind..

    Meghan Donnelly

@Steven Chavez Fair enough man. When I first heard the song I thought the line was "same face" and I've always kind of liked that better than "same fate"!

    Chris Fraley Presents

I think he was a teenager when he wrote it... so it kind of make since.

This song will forever be associated in my mind with that time the Drs put me on Zoloft and tried to kill me. Lol. Yeah it didn't agree with me and made me suicidal.

    Elisag

They weren't 'trying' to kill you I'm sure..I'm on Zoloft and it's really affected me positively, it's just that everyone's body reacts differently to medication

    Saul Tigh

Most of them made me more suicidal then i ever had befoe . Zoloft, Lexapro, and 2 others i forgot, I think i wanted to forget them.. only seroxat didn't made my moods more worse but gave other side effect, without meds is difficult but in most cases still better then with. AD's are business and often make things worse, I see you ;)

    Athena Baucum

I know how you feel. I've been taking a medicine called escitalopram and after also 6 MONTHS of taking it and feeling fine with it, it decided to turn around to back stab me and made me want to kill myself. I've been told not to take it and now I'm stuck without a psychiatrist and horrible anxiety and now I want to kill myself because, hey, what's the point in living if it's just going to be hell?

    George Lumsden

Athena Baucum are you still alive? i hope stuff has changed in a month

  27. DeathPoke1qa

Is he supposed to be referencing the song "Sunrise, Sunset" from the musical "Fiddler on the Roof". I mean, "Sunrise, Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset, swiftly flow the days" are lyrics from the musical. Which, the song in the musical is about looking back and reflecting how time has flied and how your children have grown up and are getting married and stuff.

    Dubba The Rapper

DeathPoke1qa think that is accurate in a way but also bright eyes has transformed this into a great indie sorta punky feel with (if you ask me) strong phycidllic lyrics that are quite simple but very very deep, kinda the contradiction that is life and this song. that's why this particular piece of art is quite beautiful

  28. Bryan Dunn

this song is scary, but I love it.

  29. Saraphine S

    :-o okay...

    insideahorse

@Overwhelming Apostrophe hate is neighbourly, my my

  33. Elijah Pederson

@slavewhipper Because that is reality. There is more darkness in truth and reality than there is light.

    Ishouldnthavetodothi

Elijah Pederson No. You're wrong. There is light in reality, and there is balance. You can choose to lean towards the light or the darkness but in REALITY, outside your personal bubble of perception, they are equal.

  34. veyliness

There is a "real" mirror on the cd-cover.

  35. Solace Creat

Is that a mirror reflecting nothing? Can't believe I never noticed that.

    Solace Creat

    @*****
Ah. I wonder if it was meant to reflect nothing. Or if the album art changed with that thought in mind. Or if someone just altered it. Either way, pretty applicable for Bright Eyes.

    see See

Solace Creat it's a mirror, friend.

    Pranksta Productions Presents

yeah the cd has the same mirror, not black, I wouldn't call it shitty I recall I could see a slight reflection lol

  36. A2Z11tree

  39. Ginda Flores

Am I the only one who gets in "Bright Eyes" moods when all you want to do is listen to Conor's voice and pick apart each song and what the lyrics mean to you

    Bee Monet

    Ginda Flores Hello. Thank you

    Christopherson

  40. kim lipps

  41. fpp4life23

wow "gross" that was a very effective and well thought out criticism...i think you need to give your cursive records back...saddle creek access revoked!!!

  42. Globeskater170

this isn't the best song to listen to Bright Eyes but there are plentyyy of songs that are good by him newest one would be : jejune stars

  43. thoppingtonscott

    quintessential emo. :)

  44. ianhappyface

i dont think i like it... a friend said that since i like cursive and brand new that i would like this... but idk. its real gross.

  45. John Pierce

    this song sucks

  46. QuadCloudNine

why do people say the most meaningful songs are dark ones? why cant a happy song be "meaningful'?

  47. Erin Sporl

On my iPod one part skips, and I couldn't tell if it was supposed to do that, like it works perfectly.

  48. themindofchase

did fiddler on the roof inspire this or is it just a huge coincidence?

  49. Johnny Fishborn

The master and his servant have exactly the same fate.Genius!

  50. summer black

I try to avoid this song

    Cody Bur

summer black one of my favorite songs ever, but man the way I feel when listening to it. Don't think I've ever had such a love hate relationship with a song.

  51. varactor_diode

I dunno, it's his on sound. The music and lyrics are pretty good, at least it doesn't sound forced. But his voice always struck me as a little goat like.

  52. goozbaghali

    Thnx :-)

  53. John D

The value of this song, or the 'point', really isn't Conor's vocal technique, but then again there's no lack of people criticizing popular videos for their trite themes/lyrics so I guess this is appropriate.

  54. Tom Tall

He sings flat and out of tune. Sad.

  55. John D

Anyways, character limit is preventing me from talking more about it :P But a few lines are also about how the speaker is beginning to give up on trying to make the change after failing and returning to old habits so many times, "Hold your sadness like a puppet...", "Become everything you said you never would be". ive tried to be general while analyzing it, and the actual song could be inspired by any of the things you've mentioned. also this is just my take, im sure other shave different opinio

  56. John D

The first part is about the lack of improvement the speaker sees in his life, despite being unsatisfied and trying to change this. "You're hopeful then you regret. The circle never breaks." This discourage cycle of failing to take control of his own life then beings to affect and weigh down on the singer, as they are conscious of their failure. "it all about the things that get stuck in your head...you've changed" A few lines are about what the speaker is upset about, and the meaningless of life

  57. goozbaghali

Can someone please provide their take on this song? Is it about the pointlessness of life, depressions, losing a lover, being bipolar, or something else? I'm a bit confused with the meaning.

  58. Matthew Wildermuth

Every artist becomes a caricature of himself in creating art. Really though, by thinking about yourself and conceiving of a unitary person you're creating a caricature of yourself. This sort of thing is unavoidable.
Conor just isn't afraid of seeming "self-important." He trusts the validity of his experiences and doesn't reason away the powerful emotion he feels, then conveys this powerful emotion in music and verse. Most temper their feelings and experiences before communicating.

  59. jimo2006

14 dislikes..really?? How can you dislike this?? Blood, passion, pain, love ...people kill me! I thank God for artists like this. No...for just true artists!!

  60. eocine

I don't get it. When I'm sad, I listen to Bright Eye's sad songs. I'm not sure I entirely feel less sad or anything. But something is better..And it's just alright.

When I'm happy, I listen to Bright Eye's cheery songs, and everything is just alright.

  61. Matthew Wildermuth

This song just made me so depressed I feel sick to my stomach. It's been a few years since I've listened to it.
