Bright Eyes - False Advertising Lyrics

On a string I was held.
The way that I move, can you tell?
My actions are orchestrated from above.
So I swing and I sway.
Wave my hand. Kick my leg.
And it is always right with the music.
"Until all that swaying starts to make you sick"
For a song I was bought.
Now I lie when I talk with a careful eye on the cue card.
Onto a stage, I was pushed with my sorrow well rehearsed.
So give me all your pity and your money. Now.
"We used to think that sound was something pure"
If I could act like this was my real life and not some cage where I've been placed,
then, I could tell you the truth like I used to and not be afraid of sounding fake.
Now all that anyone is listening for are the mistakes.
In a house, by myself, I hear the ice start to melt and watch rooftops weep for the sunlight.
And I know what must change. Fuck my face. Fuck my name.
They are brief and false advertisements for a soul I don't have.
Something true I have lacked and spent my whole life trying to make up for.
But I found in a song and in the people I love.
They will lift me up out of darkness.
Now my door stands open. I am inviting everyone in.
We're gonna laugh, we're gonna drink until the morning comes.
That is what we are going to do.

Hi Steve, welcome back. It's gonna be ok, listen to songs that bring you back but know that you are loved and you've moved on. You can have a taste of sadness, but don't let it consume you.

Once you crack the code and find out literally every lyric Conor ever wrote was spiritual, you start to hear everything he said in an entirely new way. If you thought his music was sad before, well, let's just say you don't know the half of it.

  11. J.... M....

Love this song and forever will

  12. M.... P....

    anyone here from atlas/tea's cover?

gets so damn pretty at 2:30

  18. C.... R....

Sounds like Crown of Love by Arcade Fire.

    C.... R....

    that isn't not true.

    C.... R....

    @buttrock obama So yes? lol

    C.... R....

I know both songs, and I have never really thought that. This song is much darker.

    C.... R....

    I guess.

  19. J.... B....

I first heard this song during a snow storm in Louisville, KY while I was studying music in grad school at U of L. It changed my life. I wept, and it's still my favorite winter anthem. Just beautiful.

    J.... B....

For me it’s a spring anthem. I first heard it on a beautiful spring day when flowers and leaves were just starting to sprout out. It’s amazing how music is interpreted and felt in different ways. It’s beautiful. :)

  20. P.... W....

    ALl I got right now

+Danny Santiago Ramirez Montoya Yep. It's one of those nights when you just want to laugh and drink until the morning comes!

  23. r.... ....

As my favorites list slowly turns into nothing but bright eyes

    r.... ....

Haha yep, happened to me at age 16. 😃
I stopped listening to most of the other music I listened to like Rancid & other fast, upbeat stuff the very first time I heard Bright Eyes, because Conor was/is just amazing. My sister was playing them in her car while taking me to a friend's house. That's all it took. I was hooked immediately & fell in love very quickly. I'm 33 now, and I find myself wondering if that was mentally/emotionally healthy during those formative years when you're trying to find yourself & your brain is still developing...but nonetheless I still have the same love for him all these years later, especially with their older stuff (Fevers And Mirrors, Letting Off the Happiness, Everyday and Every night, etc.)

  24. M.... D....

This song takes me away. A masterpiece.

  25. M.... D....

"If I could act like this was my real life and not some cage where I've been placed,
then, I could tell you the truth like I used to and not be afraid of sounding fake.

    M.... D....

Mars Del Toro "Oh, I'm sorry"

    M.... D....

    @Joji Miller no it's okay it's okay

  26. b.... ....

the orchestra sounds like moments when you overcome depression,

    b.... ....

+bluntzcfarnam i wish i knew that fucking sound

    b.... ....

What a wonderfully beautiful way to describe the orchestration in this song. It’s spot on! That sound fills my heart and makes me feel...I do not even know how to describe it. It makes my soul feel as though it would explode with emotion. His music is so beautifully tragic.

  27. j.... ....

    what happens at 2:07 ??

    j.... ....

it has to do with the lyrics, "Now all that anyone is listening for are the mistakes." And then one of the band members makes a mistake. I think it was one of the string players. Idk. I think its cool, ive never heard a purposeful mistake in music.

    j.... ....

    @Bethany Stone
I thought it was pretty clever. I also appreciate how Conor never claims to be a great musician, even though his music is brilliant in its own way. He even alludes to that in their song "Road to Joy".

  28. c.... r....

    it's Not t.v. it's 6

  29. S.... ....

This is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time

  30. T.... F....

Genius production. Especially how it transitions into the next song. Really smart and well-executed.

  31. H.... ....

I got to see them back in 2007 during the Cassadaga tour and they did this and Road to Joy as their encores :)

    H.... ....

    That sounds amazing

  32. A.... S....

It's weird, I have always had this fantasy; that I would hire a small orchestra and play this at my best friend's wedding, then at the end of the song, pretend to get the party going. I would then leave while the party starts without letting anyone knowing. finally, I would go home and bawl my eyes out.

  33. A.... T....

probably my favorite Bright Eyes song. Check out my cover if you're so inclined to do so. Also, even more so... Check out the only other cover of this song on youtube that I can find. Personally, I give her props.

  34. T.... B....

Bod Dylan is so overrated. He's more comparable to Elliot Smith except he can't sing or play guitar. Bright Eyes is not pure folk, they are a lot of things and should never be used in the same sentence as Bob Dildo

  35. C.... ....

    ass ass ass ass ass

  36. A.... ....

    adblock pro.

  37. L.... S....

these commercials on you tube piss me off

    L.... S....

LENY SILVA YouTube red worth every penny

  38. L.... S....

these commercials on you tube piss me off

  39. D.... S....

I always wondered why this song isn't more well-known. The instrumental alone is so great.

  40. G.... P....

Now my door, it stands open, Im inviting everyone in. We re gonna laugh, we re gonna drink until the morning comes- thats a standout moment for me, like many others on lifted.

  41. Y.... T....

Everyone has felt like a puppet sometime in their life. We all have danced to the music of others in order to fit in. Connor has the gift of expressing this universal struggle and emotion in the medium of orchestral music. Absolutely beautiful. He is truly an artist.

  42. C.... W....

Everything by conor oberst is great....literally...this is probably my favorite song because it kind of represents the way i used to live...he has a new cd out with mystic valley band...awesome! breezy is too sad...about an old friend of his that died...conor is the voice of so many people its astounding.

  43. C.... W....

conor oberst may be compared to bob dylan but i think he is better...look up anything he has made & you will enjoy it...this is probably my favorite song by bright eyes...or method acting...maybe lime tree...milk thistle is great as well....honestly anything he makes is good..."and I know what must change.Fuck my face.Fuck my name. They are brief & false advertising. For a soul i dont have.Something true I have lacked.& spent my whole tryin to make up for...."

  44. 3.... ....

i love the old but i love the new even more. the plot continues to thicken

  45. 3.... ....

conner oberst is the person you hear singing. song writer for the band band bright eyes. this music is pretty old.. anyhoo. cassadega is one of the somewhat newer records. its also the name of a town that was originally a spiritualist camp in florida back in the 1800's. now a bunch of psychics live there, and it played a pivitol role in conner's path of spiritual enlightenment he now seems to be on.

  46. T.... ....

I loved that on the third "On a string," the stringed instrument begins to play :)

And that 'mistake' always makes me laugh.

  47. j.... ....

yup, but thanks! i absolutely love when people recommend good music, even if I've already listened to it :)

  48. 3.... ....

have you continued to follow conner on his path of spiritual discovery? if not, i strongly recomend listening to both cassadega and the people's key until you know every word

  49. c.... ....

I used to listen to this cd constantly, I love it! every song is awesome

  50. S.... ....

@YoseMiteEmery It is! Sometimes I'm in love with this one or another... but my favorite songs are mostly on this album. =D

  51. Y.... ....

@MonsterMisunderstood its too hard to choose! haha :p

  52. S.... ....

    This is my favorite album...

  53. m.... ....

this is so deliciously melancholic xD

  54. T.... B....

For some reason, this song plays in my head when I'm feeling nostalgic

  55. A.... ....

  56. f.... ....

For some reason, I feel so emotional inside when I listen to this.

  58. b.... ....

    @delacyll No, it's ok, it's ok. 1,2,3 1,2,3

  59. T.... P....

Gotta put some Bright Eyes influence in my bands' music!

  60. j.... ....

I feel like whenever I've ever thought deeply about life, it's while I was listening to bright eyes.

  61. J.... B....

    @8644371

It's the climax of a great song and I love music. I don't think the lyrics are sad or anything.

  62. J.... C....

I lost all my CD's recently and I miss this album the most.

  63. J.... B....

I can keep it together for most of this song, but when he says "We're gonna laugh, we're gonna drink until the morning comes. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO! COME ON, COME ON!" I just burst into tears.

  64. x.... ....

i felt kinda surprised when he said fuck

  65. H.... M....

    @delacyll 1 2 3, 1 2 3. BOOM! good shit.

  66. t.... ....

@miker12892 Did your mom and dad in the front seat get mad?

  67. E.... S....

2:33 when the orchestra comes in. Fucking chills man!
I really think this and Wide Awake are two of the best albums out there. No doubt.
