Bright Eyes - Another Travelin' Song Lyrics

Well I'm changing all my strings
I'm gonna write another traveling song
About all the billion highways and the cities at the break of dawn
Well I guess the best that I can do now is pretend that I've done nothing wrong
And to dream about a train that's gonna take me back where I belong

Well now the ocean speaks and spits and I can hear it from the interstate
And I'm screaming at my brother on a cell phone he's far away
I'm saying nothing in the past or future ever will feel like today
Until we're parking in an alley
Just hoping that our shit is safe

So I go back and forth forever
All my thoughts they come in pairs
Oh I will, I won't, I doubt I don't
I'm not surprised but I never feel quite prepared

Now I'm hunched over a typewriter
I guess you call that painting in a cave
And there's a word I can't remember
And a feeling I cannot escape
And now my ashtray's overflowing
I'm still staring at a clean white page
Oh and morning's at my window
She is sending me to bed again

Well I dream of dark on the horizon
I dream a desert where the dead lay down
I dream a prostituted child touching an old man in a fast food crowd
Oh yeah, I dreamt a ship was sinking
There was people screaming all around
And I awoke to my alarm clock
It was a pop song, it was playing loud

So I will find my fears and face them
Or I will cower like a dog
I will kick and scream or kneel and plead
I'll fight like hell to hide that I've given up

Skeptic tank episode #322 brought me here.

Hilarious watching the Brooklyn crowd assure itself. "Oh my. No, no. It's not country. He writes of being 'hunched over a typewriter, after all." Get with it, y'all.

One of my very best friends has been playing this song for a long time around me and I have always gotten goosebumps listening to it.  Tonight when he went to start playing it on my guitar, I just typed in a couple lyrics that he was singing and quickly googled the lyrics.  To my surprise this is what came up.. ROght now this second, hes playing along with it, in nearly perfect harmony.  Nothing like having a private personal show from a musician I would pay to see but hes my friend, and hes playing a song that Ive liked for along time hearing him sing it.  Bright Eyes, you guys are aweosme.  Just wanted to  let you know.

    Great story.
Although I'm a tiny bit concerned about the 'near perfect harmony' line....
    Heh~heh.

  7. m.... ....

    Totally agreed on that.

  8. G.... v....

She's saying that it's not country. It's indie-folk. Because of what Fox5593 said, saying it was country.

    G.... v....

This is a country song, but it's not like the commercial country you hear on "country" radio (which is basically pop music with a twang), this modern outlaw/alt-country like Sturgill Simpson, Kacey Musgraves, Ryan Adams, Chris Stapleton, etc

  9. l.... ....

what i refer to as "radio country" is just another form of pop music. the elders of country music would puke in their mouths at the sound of big and rich. country can be cool when its about heartbreak and telling a story.

  10. I.... P....

who cares about the genre its great regardless

  11. M.... A....

if you love dudes too like my shit

    M.... A....

Marcelis Adams I love dudes man

  12. V.... G....

Fucking adore this. Adore him. Hope he never gets discouraged and keeps cranking out lyrical genius in the form of catchy indie-folk songs!

  13. s.... ....

    not at all country...

  14. k.... ....

    @FreddieDontAskWhy16 ???????

  15. R.... H....

    It's indie-folk

  16. m.... ....

there sure are some ignorant-ass comments here. The song's backup vocals are done by Emmylou Harris --one of the goddesses of country. Oberst likes to mix his genres. Country is not a dirty word; the country and folk genres are closely linked and often blur together. Amazing that some people think that Taylor Swift is representative of the country genre....

    m.... ....

megantron Conor Oberst is the only good country artist

    m.... ....

    Ok fine Johnny Cash too

  17. L.... A....

@DareToDream3 this is what he is listed as Indie rock, indie folk, folk rock, indie pop, post-hardcore, alternative country

  18. L.... A....

this doesn't sound like country to me. It's folk!

  19. R.... S....

@89MetalHeart Except with a better voice, lol. I'm saying that with humor, though: I love Dylan.

  20. j.... ....

isnt this folk music? well its sure as hell not country, country is like taylor swift and carrie underwood and that shit. folk music is where its at. like mumford and sons and the decemberists and cursive, etc...

    j.... ....

jillybean190 calling Carrie Underwood and Swift country music is like calling Metallica and Lamb of God rythem and blues. Hank III, Jamison, Wayne Hancock is country music. Those two are candy ass pop music played on cookie cutter so called country music stations that, for the most part, play no talent hacks. My son (rip) turned me on to this band and I must say they have an extreme amount of talent.

    @89MetalHeart

Expect totally not at all. Bright Eyes is Bright Eyes it's one of those bands that in a lot of ways defies shallow genre comparisons and is totally unique in every way.

  22. S.... ....

Er, Bright Eyes is Indie Rock..

  23. k.... ....

    @Fox5593 HELL YEAH BROTHA!
