Bright Eyes - A Line Allows Progress, a Circle Does Not Lyrics

Sitting around, no work today
Try pacing to keep awake
Laying around, no school today
Just drink until the clock has circled all the way
It is late afternoon
As you walk through the rooms
Of a house that is quiet
Except for unanswered telephones
You stand near the sink
While you're mixing a drink
You think you don't want to pass out
Where your roommates will find you again
Stumble around the neighborhood with nothing to do
You're always looking for something
To sniff, smoke, or swallow
Calling over next door to see what they got
But you would settle for anything
That would make your brain slow down or stop
Break this circle of thoughts you chase
Before they catch back up with you
And your parents noticed your thinning face,
All the weight you lost
All the weight you are losing
You said, "I'm done feeling like a skeleton
No more sleep walking dead"
You're going to wake from this coma
You're going to crawl from this bed you have made
And stop counting on that camera
That hangs round your neck
Because it won't ever remember
What you choose to forget
As you try to find some source of light
Try to name one thing you like
You used to have such a longer list
And light you never had to look for it
But now it's so easy to second guess everything you do
Until all you want is to finish this half empty glass
Before the ice melts away
This feeling always used to pass
But seems like it's every day
Seems like it's every night now

  12. C.... B....

Bright eyes has been there for me through the best of times and the worst of times. And 10 years later, that still hasn't changed.

    C.... B....

Same here!! They've been there for me for 17 years now... I'm 33 & fell in love with them when I was 16. They were the only band I would constantly listen to for about 4 years. Ahhh, I'm so old!!! And Conor's gettin' up there, too. Nooo 😰

  13. S.... J....

Over ten years now since I've loved Bright Eyes

  14. c.... a....

this song gets to me every fucking time

  15. B.... W....

    Addiction is a motherfucker

  16. c.... ....

    You misspelled Bright.
And it bothers me soo fucking much.

  17. B.... P....

going through various mental illnesses, dealing with drug addictions and alcoholism, this song relates to me very much. but it also in some way gives me hope. that maybe, just maybe, i can turn all this torture into art.

    B.... P....

Brittany Purdy the best of luck to you

  18. A.... J....

Something tells me Conor's no stranger to coke. Even the title... Still, great lyricist!

  19. T.... C....

Would anyone happen to know what kind of organ is being used in this song?

  20. S.... ....

Quit counting on the camera that hangs around your neck because you will never remember what you choose to forget....

  21. J.... A....

"stumble around the neighborhood with nothing to do

    to sniff, smoke, or swallow
calling over next door to see what they got
but you would settle for anything
that would make your brain slow down or stop"
    relevant.

i really wonder what the people who disliked this were thinking... and i don't mean that like sarcastically. i just genuinely want to know why they dont like it. sometimes i unlike songs because i love them so much it hurts, but i don't really mean it. maybe it's like that.

  23. e.... ....

    and bright, what the hell?

  24. e.... ....

i've listen to this song dozens of times and this is the first time i've noticed circle is misspelt

  25. B.... P....

I've never had a song represent my life so much. And it makes me sad that this is it..

  26. J.... J....

This song just about sums up my life before rehab.

  27. M.... P....

lol i've seen live renditions of this song and it never comes out right

  28. J.... A....

the beginning of this reminds me of between the bars by elliott smith, another great song :)

  29. a.... ....

nothing makes my Saturday afternoons better quite like throwing on my favourite Argyle sweater, Harry Potter scarf, a pair of skinny jeans and my black high-tops, and a snorkel, and going down to the art college where I sit up against a tree and play this song on my Ukelele. I need the snorkel because otherwise I would drown in an ocean of bitches

    a.... ....

archaist I'm attracted to you lol

    a.... ....

    archaist gold

  30. i.... ....

    seems like its every day
seems like its every night now

  31. L.... V....

@lynch03 It's kind of weird that it works that way, haha. It reminds me of the line in Poison Oak (which in my opinion is the saddest song ever) "The sound of loneliness makes me happier."

  32. M.... P....

@laurencosby when i'm like that this is the music i live through and it eases the pain

  33. L.... V....

Is it weird that when I'm at a low in depression and I listen to the saddest songs by Bright Eyes, I feel better?

  34. t.... ....

so drunk he spelled bright eyes wrong

  35. M.... D....

Why is this not on itunes?

  36. K.... P....

    I'm drinking as we speak.

  37. s.... ....

Try to name one thing you like
You used to have such a longer list

  38. K.... P....

This explains why people become alcoholics and drug addicts.
    Depression fucks people up.

    Poor us.

  39. q.... ....

    such a powerful song.
i have the deepest respect for conor.

  40. T.... P....

    @intheshadowofatree that kinda sucks..

  41. m.... ....

Everything the mood described in this song comes over me, I have to listen to this to remind myself to snap out of it before being dragged into the cycle. A great thanks to them for the help.

  42. A.... ....

This song was what my life was about from when i was 13- 16.

  43. r.... ....

I can relate to this song so much it is unreal...
    Conor Oberst is amazing.

  44. R.... D....

@IntoTheAlone Lol, pianist... And thanks :)

  45. F.... ....

Their voices contrast so well I love it . I wish there were more songs of these 2 singing together.

  46. N.... M....

I really like the second half of this song.

  47. G.... K....

    whose the other guy singing?

    G.... K....

I'm a little late but its Joe Knapp

    G.... K....

He has a band called son, ambulance who did a split album with bright eyes in like 2001. They're really amazing, you should check them out. I just got my first album by them and its really good. Just listen to house guest, Billy budd, pleasure now, and paper snowflakes and you'll be hooked

  48. G.... K....

this song sums up my life.

  49. b.... ....

    That line gets me, too.

  50. d.... ....

    great song!
