Liked this song and loved the theme as a kid in the 70s. Did not get they were singing about some dorky moped until later. Why would Mr 409 write about a moped? Still don't get it. Still a really good tune.

Imagine owning a Honda during this era and the type of “comments” people would give you because Japan was still recovering from WWII.

And then all of a sudden, Japanese manufacturer's like Honda released it's super bike which shocked the Western market

As a lifelong Honda addict, I was shocked when I saw that the "all-American" Beach Boys had FINALLY paid tribute to my favorite car brand, but then I heard the song & said "Oh..........Honda BIKE/MOTORCYCLE............DUH!!!!!!!!!!!" STILL an awesome song, though.

When I was in combat in Vietnam (1971) when transferring about we had an overnight layover in Saigon. My friend and I visited a large bar and ahem . . . "friendship lounge." :-) Playing on stage was a very talented all-Vietnamese band. All were wearing California surfer shirts, aviator sunglasses, and the obligatory white jeans finished off with white canvas slip-on shoes. Turns out they were an American music cover band (playing mostly Beach Boys songs). They sounded EXACTLY like The Beach Boys. If you closed your eyes you would swear it was a live BB concert. They sang without accents, and they had the Brian, Mike, and Al nailed.

The band was so good we gave standing ovations after each tune. We asked them to play Little Honda, California Girls, and Surfer Girl over and over and over. I remember into the night hearing those songs at least 7 times each. It made us all homesick for the States, and sad too (because any combat sucks, especially when you're in it and bands like that reminded of us what we were missing).

Nobody liked, or trusted Japanese products back then. Before this song... Many of our Fathers, Uncles, Brothers and Cousins fought them to their deaths just 20 years earlier in WW2, Pacific Theater.

Matchless Motorcycles went out of business as soon as everyone found out a Honda was just as good as they were at climbing hills. :^)

If there was a way to measure the power of "free" advertising from rock bands like the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean willing to give for car and motorcycle manufacturers, i would imagine those two were the top salesmen in the world! If I wasn't such an old fuddy duddy GM or Honda exec;, I might just fire my own advert departmenr and hire these bands!

Many of these photos are from the "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" ad series. Well I truly did. We spent some years riding together on her Honda 90 scooter. I married her. And we are very happily together nearly 50 years later. Still riding pillion of course but on a pushbike these days. The honda 90 is worn out and there is nothing on the market that tempts me anymore.

Go look up the Honda Super Cub. This is the one that the song is about. 3 gears, 49cc engine, the Super Cub and its offspring (built under license in 22 countries) make up over 1/3 of ALL MOTORCYCLES EVER BUILT, and there are tens of millions of them still being ridden today, 60 years after debut. To get somewhere, I ride my BMW. To have fun, I ride my little Hondas. 3 gears are plenty.

Commuted to work in the 60s on a Honda 90. No good for highways, so in the 70s got a Kawasaki 250 SS. Those could do 100 mph from stock and still had good mileage.
