Brian Jonestown Massacre, The - Telegram Lyrics

I figure it out what to say but now that you've gone away
And everything turned out wrong
I looked around and you were gone, girl

To my surprise I could not be the boy that you love
You ran away and over me
And if I knew that you would run too far beyond my reach
I would have wished that you was free

I figure it out what to say but now that you've gone away
And everything turned out wrong
I opened my eyes, you were gone, girl

To my surprise I could not be the boy that you love
You ran away and over me
And if I knew that you would run too far beyond my reach
I would have wished that you was free
I would have wished that you was free
I would have wished that you was free

I figure it out what to say but now that you've gone away
And everything turned out wrong
I turned around, you was gone, girl
Man, it seems cold out today, I wish it was yesterday
'Cause this day is so damn long and everything's turned out wrong

I love the melancholy and dark undertones of BJM. In this song, "If I knew that you would run.... too far beyond my reach I would have wished that you was free...." Its like saying if I knew you were going to leave I wouldn't have let you, but I would have wanted you to be free. In his fantasy she is not free to leave him. She is with him in his fantasy and he wishes that it was by her own will. So he's saying he wishes she would have stayed and chosen to stay. Touches on the strength of longing and missing someone, and feeling possessive. I can totally relate to that as a man. And then the last verse, is like a resignation, he's saying its not the end of the world... but its been one day and he already longs for the past. Great song about heartbreak.

One of my all time favorite Brian Jonestown Massacre songs. I like, always have this sing playing in my head when I'm doing random things throughout the day. This song, and Dropping Bombs on the Whitehouse (Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mill's Wooden Peg).
