Brian Eno - Empty Frame Lyrics

So they rode the sea, it went on and on
They were years away, though it seemed so long
But the captain never told them what he knew
As the poor ship laboured on through the endless blue

Oh, the storm was strong and the ship was so frail
But they stumbled on raising broken sails
And they held the heavy sky on their open hands
And they dreamed of when their poor feet would touch the land

Baby, we're going 'round in circles
Where is this place we're going to?
Does anybody know we're out here on the waves?
And are any of our signals coming through?

We're going 'round in circles
We have no single point of view
And like the clouds that turn to every passing wind
We turn to any signal that comes through

At the edge of the sea were the signs of the dove
But the wrong way out and the wrong way up
We pushed the empty frame of reason out the cabin door
No, we won't be needing reasons anymore

    E.... E....

Brian Eno's and John Cale's 70s albums sound like this - some kind of arty, deranged pop music

This is one of my favorite songs. One of my favorite CD's in fact. I was in college, and a couple of friends had a copy of Rolling Stone with top ten lists, and one of them was top ten "College Music" and they were like, "What the hell is College Music?" and decided, "Well we're in college, maybe we should find out." So they went and bought the one on top. I'm so glad they did, I might never have heard this. This song, the river, and crime in the desert are my faves. So unique.

Hello...is there anybody out there?..can anybody hear me?..The signal is fading in and out, it seems I'm going round in circles...

  19. W.... W....

This song sounds like a nightmare version of a beach boys tune. Indeed, the lyrics use the "lost at sea" metaphor to comment on mental illness. "we push the empty frame of reason out the cabin door, no we won't be needing reason anymore"

    W.... W....

I don't think it has to do with mental illness at all. I think it's about transcending mere logic. In the age of reason, we made reason out to be the masterpiece of humanity, when it's but an empty frame.
