Brenda Lee - I Wanna Be Around Lyrics

I wanna be around, to pick up the pieces
When somebody breaks your heart
Some, somebody twice as smart as I

A somebody who, will swear to be true
As you use to do with me
Who'll leave you to learn that misery loves company
Wait and see

I wanna be around to see how she does it
When she breaks your heart to bits
Let's see how the puzzle fits so fine

And that's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet
As I sit there applauding from a front row seat

When somebody breaks you heart
Like you, like you broke mine

My favorite as a teen too. And remember -- this is 1963! Brenda Lee was only 18 years old when she made this recording!! How many 18 year olds have you heard that could deliver a song like this?

Sadie Vimmerststedt was an Ohio widow working in a department store when she wrote Mercer saying she thought "I wanna be around to pick up the pieces" would make a great opening line. Johnny ran with it, and gave her co-credit--and half the royalties. The money allowed her to raise and educate her three daughters, as well as personal opportunities such as travel.

a real torch song. Brenda gives her version the "mature wronged woman" feeling !

Now listen to Julie London "Cry me a river" - similar theme, beautifully sung.
These two ladies knew how to stand there and sing.

Is this words and lyrics by Johnny Mercer? Love his songs and Brenda has just the voice and style to really give them all they deserve.

This is the best version I've heard.
