Sorry but Laura had a wider vocal range than cher. You can hear it in all of her songs. This version has more emotion than cher's version. Chers vocals sound a little flat...similar to michael bolton.

It's always baffling when a star records a song, it's not promoted, then there's no mention when someone else has a hit version within a few years. Gladys Knight was not happy that Bette Midler's version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" was such a hit when hers was not(it was originally recorded by someone else as a country song, but still). When Whitney Houston had a smash hit with "The Greatest Love of All," I remember hearing zero times that George Benson had cut that side seven years before. I remember hearing once when Cher's version of this came out that Laura Branigan had cut this side, then I heard years later that it had never been recorded before Cher's version...

Laura Branigan was criminally underrated. She should have had a string of hits stretching halfway to the damn moon. Some of it was because she was not considered "hollywood beautiful"...But I found her absolutely gorgeous & extremely sexy without having to show everything. The only thing sadder than her passing is that she will probably be forgotten & never get the recognition she deserves.

@Bonus Baby she was definitely much more beautiful naturally than Cher, for exampe, who underwent gazillions of plastic surgeries to create hersrlf a "perfect and forever young looks", (still, I think she was much prettier before them) and Madonna, who was simply plain (both physically and vocally) and made it to the top by sleeping around and behaving provocative (she had a goon songs, though, during the 80's and early 90's). But Laura... She should have been in their league, an international superstar with plenty of hits and shows. Shame on her label, management, MTV, and all those who decided for us that we have to stick on with gimmicks, pornography and glossy emptiness...

Laura did an amazing job on this. People who say it sounds cheap get better ears. Cher's voice in this song when she sang it sounded like a dying whale. Not to be rude. But Laura added emotion and emotion is an important thing in music. Laura did a much better job.

The reason Cher's version was more popular was because she (or whoever advised her) simplified and commercialised the melody.

She made it more "catchy" and easier to sing along to.

In terms of the sheer quality of the voice and the range of emotions displayed, however, this is better.

This wasn't for her - plain and simple. Her vocal isn't the greatest here. She did a FAR better job on "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You". The production here is just wretched and her producers didn't have a clue what to do with this. Turns out Cher was the right vocalist for this and Bolton was the man to produce. He produced it as a Rock tune and Branigan's producers added silly synth textures that just don't belong. This was an extremely minor chart entry (#90) and justifiably so.

+Vinicius PF In my opinion, Laura's just too stately here. She doesn't really let go like she could. Cher does and it benefitted the tune. Most often, Laura's production let her down. They got cheesy with the ridiculous synths and bad drum machines. No different here. "Power of Love" suffered from this too.

There's a live one that's much better than this.

When you listen to the Cher version, it's clear she needs no auto-tuning whatsoever. Cher was at in the prime of her power as a singer when she recorded this. It's only been in the last 15 years that they've auto-tuned the shit out of her voice, which is a shame. But the work she did in the 80's and early 90's in my mind is the best, most arresting stuff she ever did.

Love this and the Cher version equally. The production on Cher's version has more punch to it (you can hear the Bon Jovi/Sambora influence on hers, quite a bit). But Laura has a lot of emotion in her voice. Awesome.

+Branigan4ever Laura can do no wrong in your eyes and that's fine. You can enjoy her without needlessly and inaccurately slamming Cher in the process. Cher's career began well before Laura's and she knew success decades earlier. She continued to be successful into the late 90's musically. By the unfortunate end of Laura's life, she was no longer musically relevant. Laura only had a few bonafide hits. Cher has had dozens. Cher has been able to sing for ages so I disagree with you there too.

@Nostal Jack Laura's career could have easily lasted as long as Chers or anyone's elses career for that matter. But unfortunately, Laura left the music industry for a while to take care of her husband who had gotten cancer (and died a few years after.) It took years for her to move on before deciding to return and record music again but unfortunately, she passed away before she could regain her career. Laura had a wider vocal range than Cher and I like this version better. It has more emotion, you can feel it in her voice.

This arrangement was too fast. I wish she'd had another pass at it, when she was more established. More power to choose. Atlantic tanked this, and Laura had to watch a real music company give it treatment, and have a hit. Something she was learning to get used to. Though it still broke her heart.
