always loved this track and unbeknownst to me it has laid there in my catalogue just waiting for a chance to mean something in my life . . . that time is now upon me after 8 years of turbulence and clinging on to the hope it will all work itself out . .my partner and I have decided to go our separate ways . . .mixed emotions hurt, sadness but strangely some relief i know there are darker days to come but for now this will help

I got married (for the first time) in 1987 and, though I didn't know it at the time, the girl had more or less married me out of sympathy because my mother had recently died. Her heart was never really in it and she never had the nerve to tell me. We fell apart in 1990 and, looking back, I lived The Long Goodbye" for those 3 years. For a while she broke my heart (no point in denying it !) but in 1997 I married the lady that became the real love of my life and brought me 2 lovely sons. Took a while.. but I got there in the end.

what is it now, twelve years ago when I first heard this song? I`d been rowing a lot with my now ex wife. I was working on a building site and this came on the radio. I listened not just to the song but to the meaning as it related to me and my lou. I heard the truth in those words and knew, for the first time, we were finished but just needed the guts to admit it to ourselves. I sat slumped against a wall, smoked a fag, feeling shattered and just so sad. That night I told her I still loved her but had to leave. She didn't cry, she didn't rant and rave. she just held me and whispered, "I know, I know."
       This song set us both free. Life....

It's sad when things happen like that, just reading your comment made me feel like when my ex and I broke up, after being together for a year. It hurts alot as far as feelings go, but in the end we end up picking ourselves back up.

Ronan Keating co -wrote this right?? Saw Paul twice in concert he was brilliant I'd def go again. Met him after the show and a nice guy-however a friend of mine saw him in a pub in Sligo and said hello and Paul ignored him. My friend was like 'F''k him and his Island 'lol

If you believe that, then I hope Santa brings you something nice. In Ireland Paul Brady is one of our best songwriters, whereas Ronan was picked out of a line to form a manufactured boyband.

Not one of the songs he is credited for as a writer has his name alone and of the dozen or so that he gets a credit for, all are co-writes involving actual songwriters and when a song is listed as being written by 7 people (two outside writers and Boyzone) you should always be suspicious.

Elvis Presley has several writer credits and yet never wrote a song in his life.

Im sure Paul didnt mind Ronan taking a bit of credit for once even if he did no much.

Love the song, but this video is only half done.  It doesn't tell a story, doesn't go anywhere, just a guy (I know it's Paul but could be anyone) despairing in the back of a cab, but what from, is there a lover somewhere else suffering too.  What's there is well shot, love the scenary & pics of the city, but maybe have less of the pics singing at the mic and add in another dimension like a lover or relative or someone with poor health or something.  Tell a story rather than have a guy going along in the back of a cab.

An absolute beautiful song, even though the content is the contrast of everything beautiful. It took me a over decade to hear the original version vs the Brooks & Dunn version but it was well worth it. I'm very thankful to both for have making the song available for my ears.
