Brady, Paul - The Homes Of Donegal Lyrics

I've just dropped in to see you all
I'll only stay awhile
I want to hear how you're getting on
I want to hear you smile
I'm happy to be back again
And greet you big and small
For there's no place on earth just like
The homes of Donegal

I long to see your smiling children
Standing by the door
The kettle boiling on the hearth
As I walk up the floor
And then to see a welcome free
For travellers one and all
For your hearts are like your mountains
In the homes of Donegal

I'd like to stay along with you
And while away the night
With fairy lore and tales of yore
Beside the turf fire bright
And then to see laid out for me
A shake-down by the wall
For there's rest for weary wanderers
In the homes of Donegal

The time has come for me to go
And bid you all adieu
For the open highway calls me back
To do these things I do
But when I'm travelling far away
Your friendship I'll recall
And please God I'll soon return unto
The homes of Donegal

Donegal, pride of all
Donegal, pride of all

The music/song just doesn’t get any better than this. I think it’s the reason why everybody claims to be Irish. Paul Brady’s fault then. What a voice he has been blessed with. ☘️❤️👍

  11. F.... W....

    I live in donegal

  12. J.... M....

I have seen Mr Brady many, many times live.I have loved his voice and music since the late 70's.
Most of the towns in Donegal are familiar to me from Irish dancing days. Our dancing master Mr Seamus Kerrigan took us to dance in so many places.Letterkenny folk festival late summer just before returning to school was the highlight of our summer. We paraded the streets, stopping to dance for the lined streets of visitors. In the evening we danced and sang in the square.Family came to support us We stayed with host families. Those were the best days.Did I mention we danced on the roof of the Fiesta Ballroom to Horslips, that wasn't sanctioned by our dancing master.
Happy, wonderful times.Surrounded by good people. Its interesting that we knew then we were having the time of our lives.I would do it all again in a heartbeat and not change a thing.

It's easy to get nostalgic about old donegal now. It offered Fuck all years ago

  17. c.... ....

although I have never been to Donegal and am not irish I feel an uncanny affiliation for the place based purely on the affection that the great Paul Brady seems to have for it which comes out in his singing.

  18. S.... C....

Unfortunately only some of the towns are in this...lot of them are left out..

My Grandfather wrote this song. To this day, my father and I sing this song. Donegal holds a special place in our hearts, even across the Atlantic. Thank you for showing tribute not only to this beautiful country but to the countryside that inspired the song. Donegal, St. Johnson, The Rosses, and Cruit Island will always hold a special place in our heart.

I just got back from a weekend traveling around Donegal in 30C heat and clear blue skies. It is by far the most scenic county in Ireland. Yes Kerry, Clare, Galway and Mayo are all fantastic too but Donegal is just magnificent in high summer as we traveled from one terrain to another....from the jaw dropping Slieve League Cliffs to Malin Head, the most northern point in Ireland via the Mamore Gap....one of the most splendid views in Ireland if not the entire world! Sparsely populated white sandy beaches where you can dive into the cool Atlantic waves and just stop and admire the awesome scenery as the waves wash all over you. And to top all of that...the fine friendly people of Donegal who you can meet and easily fall into a chat with in many of the great pubs that serve lots of great seafood, creamy pints of Guinness and listen to the best of traditional Irish music. One word....Paradise!

    P.... M....

Pooka McPhellimy . My god pooka you painted the perfect of donegal there. I am privileged to live here and travel around the county every week. You have just reminded me again how lucky I am.

    P.... M....

We'll be back again Marty. I'm glad you liked my description of the most wonderful piece of land in the world with the most wonderful people. I forgot to mention Kitty Kelly's restaurant outside Killybegs. The food and service there was awesome. Yes indeed you are a lucky man. Slainte mo chara!

    P.... M....

Yea the most northern point in all of lreland is in the south????? prod from the north, love us all, weathered the storm that tried to devide us, please from the tip in the North to the furthest point in the south let's stay strong together, believe me there is a much bigger storm coming and at long last we are going to need each other Let's start looking out for us please Love you,s one and all

    P.... M....

My God you have such a way with words that description of our wonderful county has me beaming with pride! Thank you for your beautiful words hope you get back to visit soon again.

  44. M.... G....

I am a proud donegal man myself, born and bred on the peninsula of inishowen. I had the best experience of my life so far, a magical night of stories and spirits. Friends were visiting us for a bank holiday, at the time there was a jazz festival on in a nearby town, many a traveller came far and wide to see. My brother, myself and Aisling Ceann Oir Queen of donegal, decided upon a midnight stroll. We came upon a van across the road where there so happened to be a weary traveller who went by the name of seamus. A kind free spirit, he welcomed us as if we were old friends and began to play this song on a harp. I've never heard anything more angelic than this mans harp playing. Everytime I listen to this song I remember that wonderful night, forever fresh in my memory. Thank you Aisling

This brings back great memories - not a lot of money/possesions but love in abundance. Sadly, the descendants have embraced Consumerism/Capitalism. Almost 2 years since Uncle J left us but never forgotten.

  62. A.... C....

I am from and live in Ireland and my family used to holiday in Donegal several times a year. This was my brothers favourite song and he played it at my dads funeral on may 1st 2010. He made plans to go to the grave the following month on father's day and we did go there, but it was to bury that same brother who died in a car crash on 18th June 2010. Today is the 1st may 2017 and we are back at the grave, listening to this song and just remembering good the times and worrying about future pain. Do not know why I wrote this but may God bless everyone.

    A.... C....

Ann Connors you wrote it sister because we are listening

    A.... C....

    God bless, friend

    A.... C....

Strong words well spoken. At Deis dé go bhfuil a anam!
Best regards from an expatriate in Colorado!
    Be good to yourself!

    A.... C....

God bless you Ann and if you give pain and loss long enough it shall make you a stronger person.

    A.... C....

I know why you wrote it ...because you love and miss them and this song reminds you of them and makes you happy to listen to it. May they Rest In Peace.

  63. S.... C....

We first heard this song in Galway, had to ask the barman who the singer was.
We saw Paul Brady perform when we returned home in St.Kilda "Melbourne".
We are travelling through Donegal in September on the way back to Galway, looking forward to it.

This song reminds me that what are we except spiritual beings on a human journey.

Tiocfaidh ar la - in the truest sense.

    j.... d....

jane doe - yeah, I get it. Steve Earle from Texas wrote Galway girl. It’s what Ireland does to you. Most will just gasp. Most people will claim their favorite spot is inspirational, and many are. Hard to argue about it. These songs are so special. (By the way McBride was born and raised on Cruik Island).

  85. P.... C....

  93. S.... M....

My kids and I spent all our spare time on the magical island of Cruit, swimming, fishing, playing golf and on occasions being fortunate to be in Iggy's when Paul and company dropped in. I remember the local police popping in and asking if we had no homes to go to. I said Paul Brady would be back in a while so they stayed on. It was very late when we all walked home leaving the cars in the yard just in case.

  94. s.... ....

brings back great memories of holidays spent in donegal as neighbours of my grandparents popped in to share the craic over a cup of tea - a perfect childhood summer holiday.

  95. R.... H....

Must never forget our roots, I think?

  96. D.... B....

Hard to beat Paul Brady's voice

  97. J.... M....

My Father is from Donegal, near the river Finn in a town called Menagolan.  There is not much there in that quaint old town but I am blessed by that town where my Dad is from.  I must go back again to visit and stay a spell.

    J.... M....

Hello Jack, my name is Finn Mac Geehin, our fathers could have been neighbours at some stage possibly. I know the McMenamins (Charlie Mhors right?) well. This song brings tears to my eyes because I can smell the turf fires, hear the great sceal and feel the warmth of my childhood holidays. There's nowhere like it in the world, I live in Moscow now and dream of Donegal often. Irish people should come home at last I think, we have been everywhere, but this is our home...

  98. G.... K....

My daughter and I traveled to Ireland in the Spring of 2014. We were in Donegal on Father's Day. We were staying in a hotel that faced on the Diamond. Just after supper we decided to go for a walk. We passed the Castle and took some steps that led down to the river. Just as we were in the shadow of the Castle a band that was in a pub on Bridge Street started to play "The Homes Of Donegal". My Daughter told me she had it "pre-planned as a Father's Day gift" and smiled. Some might call it "a stroke of luck". I chose to believe her story.

    G.... K....

Well, as we say in our part of the world, it may be a true story and it might not be, but it doesn't matter if it's a good story.

    G.... K....

God bless Ireland a land I love so much

    G.... K....

I call it a man who rared his child with compasion and thought you did a great job

    G.... K....

Oh she's Irish, what absolute blarney, God bless her heart. I would let her away with it too :-)

    G.... K....

    You chose well a chara
