Boyle, Susan - Both Sides, Now Lyrics
Castles in the air and feathered canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's clouds illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and junes and ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, "I love you", right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus
Crowds, I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting
Strange, they shake their heads
They say I've changed
Something's lost but something's
Gained in living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Boyle, Susan Both Sides, Now Comments
These kinds of songs resonate deeply within me. And the older you get, the more sad and profound these songs become. It's so painful.
I'm a punk rocker.... and she blows me away doing this song. She's a gift.
Susan is a huge talent, that was obvious from the start
...and this version did not disapoint me...three thumbs up...(I borrowed one...)
Unbelievable. How this woman can sing!
I love this lady vocals ride along with that beautiful piano nice
Despite the awesome beauty of this songs rendition its also very sad and it leaves a lasting melancholy mood even after you've listened to the song. This interpretation leaves a sense of harsh sacrifices a person made in Life for a good purpose; but took its toll in the end.
Beautiful, experienced life, it's ups and downs x
The only one I've ever seen that left Simon speechless.
wow!.bravo
Susan a magnificent singer...yet the version of Joni Mitchell, sang in 2000, was beyond compare. I know there is no real need to compare...Susan sang it very well too... But Joni Mitchell's version is from paradise. Look it up...
Sempre gostei muito dessa música, mas depois dessa interpretação perfeita, fiquei apaixonado! Susan, você é fantástica!
I always liked this song very much, but after this perfect performance, I was in love! Susan, you're fantastic!

There was something deep within me long ago .
As I grew older , it was lost .
I can not even cry .
That lightning dream will never come back again .
This song was my youth itself .
I want to end my last life while taking a cherry blizzard under the cherry blossoms in full bloom .
From Tokyo in Japan .
Which national are you watching this video ?
She skips a verse. Not good! Two versus only...that's not fair to the listener!
Lovely, wonderful lady that is Susan Boyle.
Beautiful voice
Thanks
I really desire to hug this sweet woman
Amazing Susan!!!
You.ve got to be good to sing this one,and Susan does it in spades. Wow.
wow she is truly incredible. this cover is amazing.
so heartfelt beautiful song...💕
I hope Susan is doing well.
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now

Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.

OMW... Haven't really listened to Susan Boyle before... All I can say is that I experience her voice (in this song) as emotion expressed masterfully & beautifully. So raw. For me this is rare nowadays.
My favourite version of a beautiful song.
Beautiful, touching rendition. Thanks
I have always loved this song
but Susan Boyle version has made me want to listen to this practically daily. ...
sings it with such passion & emotion..
I hear every note crystal clear. .
love it
I havent listened to this in years. And it beings back the tears all the same :(
I just cant stop listening to this song..
susan sings it with such clarity. .
I can hear every word..
wow I never ever thought I'd love this song sang by another. .
the simplicity of just the piano I love it.. & wow what a voice..!!
did this song better than proud...
I felt every note..
& could hear the words nice & clear..
I will now be buying this track lol
amazing
jesse sheri Paul Young and Clannad also do a very nice version of this song. The harmonic blend of their voices is heavenly. You might want to check that one out too.
There's no denying how awesome her voice really is - so glad she's made her mark in this world.
Takes a nice voice to sing this beautiful song. This is only the second version I’ve heard.
Should I hang up
ze zingt als een engel en voor mij is ze dat ook ik wens haar alleen alle geluk.
en dat ze nog heel voor ons zal zingen.best of luck
Susan nailed it
Susan's cover and the one by The Tallest Man on Earth are my two favorites. They both pay great respect to Joni's beautiful, classic song.
I listened to all three to refresh my memory Joni Mitchell's and Judy Collins' versions, but this one brought tears to my eyes.
Lisa Davies Check out the Paul Young/Clannad version. It’s a keeper.
She sings the feeling behind the song perfectly.
OMG she's magnificent her voice
There are many ways to sing a song. The tempo/ the clarity of voice/ the range and of course the soul. Neil Diamond captures the soul. Susan's is truly beautiful.
How can anyone murder such a beautiful song. Shocking....she should ask Mary Hopkin for a lesson on how to sing it!
Beautiful voice
Very, very heartfelt version!
Bravo!
Cracking version!
She makes my wiener soft.
Great rendition of this song. I love all the remakes of this song, as well as the original. Joni gets top honors for writing it! Judy for making it famous, but this version, Glen Campbell's, Roger Whitaker's are all great. A great song, and there's no point in arguing over who sings it best.
john316fun Listen to Paul Young and Clannad’s version.
Excellent version by Susan :)
sublime
It was pretty, but she left a whole verse out.
too slow
beautiful
WOW ! Susan great job. STILL ONE OF MT FAVORITE SONGS OF ALL TIME. and there have been a few versions of this song, but you nailed it ! Paul Young & Clannad version for the movie Switch and Joni Mitchell in 1969 the original righter and singer of this great song.
A beautiful rendition.
im just 24 but I enjoyed it so much I love Susan from the start until now. one of the most blessed voice in world
Personally I don't like the arrangement- but her voice is very very good.
Actually reminded me of a young Steisand at one point. What is great about her version is that she sings it differently from
anyone else I have heard.
BOTH SIDES NOW

I really…
Wow!!! Very well done!
Susan's voice sends chills, Everytime I hear her.
Really lovely for her voice. Love the tempo.
That was so beautiful and she meant that because she did not know life at all until someone heard her voice. She is a beautiful woman with a good heart.
a God giving talent wow what a voice
Absolutely beautiful
beautiful thanks
She was 42 during her audition.
I have watched her in her audition...she is a great woman.
Joni Mitchell.. wrote it, did a slow version did a slow version of it too! .
There reaches a stage where degrees of beauty don't seem that important to measure and so it seemed for me with Judy Collins and Susan Boyle. On my desk the only CD, "I Dreamed a Dream", followed by a flood of tears for each but for different reasons.
No doubt about it a unbelievable voice !
God is real
Best rendition of this song from an amazing singer.
simply amazing.
Paul young and clannad --- THE BEST VERSION
My mum used to get us in her choir to sing this in the 70s. I hear it in my head very often now she has gone, and have just discovered this version. It has all the heart of the original. It is so utterly moving and reminds me of her. This will be my funeral song one day.
Never expected that... I knew she could sing, but this is absolutely wonderful! Love it, thank you.
Absolutely charming.
beautiful song
Susan Boyle is simply the best.
WOW until a few moments ago, I thought Judy Collins's was my favorite rendition, but this one is just great and touching...
Judy recorded first, then Joni :)
+Kimberlee Esmeralda Joni wrote it though.
Alain Verreault Check out the version by Paul Young and Clannad. It’s a great one too.
I didn't expect this from her. Not as good as Neil Diamond's but comes a good second. I wonder though if the too slow treatment rhymes with the lyrics.
I prefer the original from Joni Mitchell
I think each artists version is beautiful.
Me too.
I do so agree.
Nothing about Suzan....she does a very great interpretation of this masterpiece about life and dreams....But Joni was the song writer, composer.....There was no 2 Joni Mitchell, There is still no 2 Joni Mitchell.
Killing me softly
I prefer the Judy Collins version myself
Although I wish she hadn't omitted the one stanza, the feeling in her rendition truly gets to me. Absolutely beautiful and heart-wrenching at the same time. What an amazing singer.
+spita70 Well, that stanza was about being a performer and becoming famous ... which is a little off-topic to the song's "point".
Not true Eliezer, the stanza is about falling in love.
No. She sings "Tears and fears and feeling proud / To say "I love you" right out loud". She skipped "But now it's just another show / You leave 'em laughing when you go / And if you care, don't let them know / Don't give yourself away". SHOW BIZ.
While I appreciate your interpretation about the second verse being about show biz Eliezer, I respectfully disagree. Of course, this is art so your interpretation is as relevant as mine is, however I would like to explain why I think the second verse is about love and not show biz. The quotation, "Tears and fears and feeling proud/ To say I love you right out loud" is sung at the beginning of the third/last verse just before she sings "...circus crowds/ I've looked at LIFE that way", so when she mentions love in the third verse she is tying it into what life about.
The second stanza which has been omitted in the Susan Boyle version as you know begins with, "Moons and Junes and ferris wheels/ The dizzy dancing way you feel / As every fairy tale comes real / I looked at love that way." None of that points to show biz and it is all about the feelings one feels when they fall in love and having it be "fairy tale" like. The stanza that makes you think this second verse is about showbiz is the word, "show". Lets look at this stanza: Now, remember that this is the second stanza from the second verse and the first stanza just ended by talking about the way love feels. She starts the stanza by singing, "But now it's just another show", I don't interpret this to be about show biz at all. With the word "show" she is talking about a love relationship and the word "show" she is using a metaphor to express that the relationship and the way she feels about her romantic interest has changed because she feels she is no longer in love and does not want to "act/pretend" (i.e., put on a "show") like she is anymore. This leads to the phrase, "You leave them laughing when you go", which means she doesn't want to hurt her love interest and wants to leave them in a positive state as opposed to negative. Then she sings in that verse, "And if you care, don't let them know" (she wants hide her lingering feelings of love that she may have)/ Don't give yourself away (she wants to protect herself by not revealing herself too much).
I will end here. By all means your interpretation is valid Eliezer, I just think differently. Best wishes!
Brilliant! Susan Boyle, considering all you have been through, this is obviously from the bottom of your heart.
None of you have listened to Paul young and clannad then?? For me, nothing compares.
I listened to your recommendation. .
never knew paul young did this version
you are right. .
plus there is another verse I realise should have been in it..
many thanks
ive now added your version as my favourite even more than susans
GemJo 100 I couldn’t agree more. 👍🏾
Very nice.
An Angel Voice
Very Impressive!
LOVE!!!! What a gift!
Beautiful song. You can tell she puts her heart & soul in every tone of her voice to make a top classical song to the best quality sound any one can appreciate. 😅💝💿
Great song and song beautifully
Is it just me or did she skip a verse?
Yep, she completely skipped the one about love ('moons and Junes and ferris wheels' etc)! Not sure why anyone would do that especially as it makes the song seem really short, but yeah...
+XDanW That verse was mostly about being a performer and becoming famous ... which is a little off-topic to the song's point, as Ms. Boyle interprets it.
Yes, she skipped the verse about falling in love.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time and, of course, the original version is my favorite however, this Susan Boyle's version is so beautiful !!! She's got such a beautiful voice!
Many have tried. Many have failed, some have come close but none have done it quite like you. Truelly this is the one that touches the essence of being. Thanks Susan-
+Pieter Celliers Who in your estimation has failed?
totally agree
Pieter Celliers
LoL one could easily get you confused for that singer in the Cats from Holland.
Eliezer Pennywhistler That’s what I’d like to know.
She's really feeling what she's singing and between that and her gorgeous voice, this is my favorite version of this song. Just beautiful!
Susan a magnificent singer...yet the version of Joni Mitchell, sang in 2000, was beyond compare. I know there is no real need to compare...Susan sang it very well too... But Joni Mitchell's version is from paradise. Look it up...
She's not one of the most famous people in the world for nothing.
This does not in any way compare. Nothing personal against Susan. Joni wrote the song and sang it with the most depth and passion. This version is thin, lacking any depth.
Gorgeous. I really 'got' the song in way I haven't before -- beautiful vulnerability in her singing.
Well ever since Susa was discovered on stage as a grreaaat singer she has never ever looked back. She is the best.
I'm not being negative about the younger singers mentioned. Carly Rae, for example. I just don't think they have experienced enough of clouds, love, or life to sing this really meaningfully and fully.
As I read this on February 20, 2017, I can't but wish you are still with us, but if not I wish you a peaceful transition to the other plane of our existence
Tessie Mae Joni wrote this meaningful song in her 20s so age might not matter
Tessie Mae absoluteinfinitisimily right
I've enjoyed many covers of this song by men and women, old and young. I think that Carly Rae's is the only one I strongly disliked: it had no discernible emotion of any kind.
@Learning the Harp with Christy-Lyn! I'm not a troll. Yes, Joni was a special case. There are (were) a few great young artists, unfortunately only a few.
I think Judy Collins did the song with great polish and feeling - and exactly the right tempo. Probably the best. The song is so full of wistful regrets and loss of innocence that performing it must be like walking on emotional quicksand. You gotta roll. She kept just the righty distance from it. Like the actor said, "The trick is not to cry outright - but to bear to holding back the tears - with dignity." For some reason, Joni Mitchell seems to have a shy streak at the core of her on-stage persona. And to my ear, that held her back and slowed her down too much even though rendering her own act of creation. What Judy covered in 3 minutes nineteen seconds, Joni took 4 minutes and 20 seconds, not to overlook her short added chorus. Still, a discernible touch too slow. Boyle omitted one full stanza, as someone has alreadyt noted, and she still took 4 minutes and ten seconds. Too drawn out and meditative, in my opinion. Interestingly Boyle demonstrates the strongest voice of all three. Perhaps her own instinctive grasp of that advantage worked against her. In any case the song is a real beauty. And Mitchell can consider it a privilege to have created it. And Collins can enjoy the privilege of doing it perfect justice.
