Bowie, David - Who Can I Be Now? Lyrics

Everybody's raised in blindness
Everybody knows it's true
Everybody feels that everything is real
Anybody's point of view

Nobody can break their bondage
Everyone can feel their chains
But even in my life I knew you found your sight
And nothing would be quite the same

Please help me
Who can I be now? You found me
Who can I be? Fell apart, you found me
Now can I be now? You found me
Now can I be real?
Can I be real? (Somebody real)

Hmmm, if it's all a vast creation
Putting on a face that's new
Someone has to see, a role for him and me
Someone might as well be you

Up in heaven, any angel
Writes a special game to play
Oh-oh, could we, could we make a star to snatch their angels, boy
Played your role for every day

Please help me
Who can I be now? You found me
Who can I be? Fell apart, you found me
Now can I be now? You found me
Now can I be real? Can I be?

Who can I be now? You found me
Who can I be? Fell upon, you found me
Now can I be now? You found me
Now can I, can I be real? Can I be real?
Can I be real? Can I be?
(Who) can I be?
Yeah, yeah
(Now) Yeah, can I be (now)?
You found me
(Now) can I be free?
Can I...

  1. S.... ....

The way he sings is so feeling

  2. C.... G....

One of my all-time favorite songs! Just amazing, even though it didn't make the cut on the album I'm glad it was released as a bonus track.

  3. C.... G....

One of his best vocal performances.

    C.... G....

    thats so true

  4. b.... ....

Astonishing that this was consigned to the musical waste-bin! It should have been on Young Americans.

    b.... ....

I agree completely. At least now we have it

    b.... ....

this should have replaced Across the Universe, decent-intriguing B-Side material at best; excluding WCIBN from the YA album was a travesty, I understand Tony Visconti's perplexity when he found out this song was excluded.

    b.... ....

@Joan Ruiz Jacob It's a short album why not just add another song to it?

    b.... ....

@John Gronkowski Bowie was doing tons of cocaine and the album had several producers, a bit out of control

    b.... ....

It's got lovely instrumentation but, perhaps, lyrically, he thought it was a bit too self deprecating. Making what he called a 'plastic soul' record may be part sincerity, part artifice, but it robs the listener of the choice as to which to regard it as, makes the album be branded as less postmodern, more just factory slick homage, if a song implies that the whole album is just an act, therefore implying that the whole album is just a way of selling more in America.

*Who can it be knocking at my door?/ go away/ don't come round here no more/ can't you see that it's late at night?*
