Bowie, David - Uncle Arthur Lyrics

Strikes the bell for 5 o'clock, Uncle Arthur closes shop
Screws the tops on all the bottles, turns the lights out, locks it up
Climbs across his bike and he's away
Cycles past the gasworks, past the river, down the high street
Back to mother, it's another empty day

[CHORUS]
Uncle Arthur likes his mommy
Uncle Arthur still reads comics
Uncle Arthur follows Batman

Round and round the rumours fly, how he ran away from Mum
On his 32nd birthday, told her that he'd found a chum Mother cried and raved and yelled and fussed
Arthur left her no illusion, brought the girl round, save confusion
Sally was the real thing, not just lust

[CHORUS]
Uncle Arthur vanished quickly
Uncle Arthur and his new bride
Uncle Arthur follows Sally
Round and round goes Arthur's head, hasn't eaten well for days
Little Sally may be lovely, but cooking leaves her in a maze

Uncle Arthur packed his bags and fled
Back to mother, all's forgiven, serving in the family shop

He gets his pocket money, he's well fed
Uncle Arthur past the gasworks
Uncle Arthur past the river
Uncle Arthur down the high street
Uncle Arthur follows mother

He sounds like he's in 40s at this point! Wow what character in his voice!

  6. G.... J....

LOL This is fun. I'm glad I took the plunge into this ancient Bowie. Nice sound quality too. First albums often are VERY interesting.

  7. G.... P....

Starting a Bowie binge, wish me luck

    G.... P....

    Same here

    G.... P....

should be easy since he is so good 😅

  8. T.... S....

    What is this song about?

    T.... S....

Tanner Sandell I don’t really know. But I just like bobbing my head to this song.

    T.... S....

It’s about the narrator’s uncle, who’s kind of a man-child. Not much to it, really.

    T.... S....

It's a song about Uncle Arthur who is 32 but still acts like little boy. David wrote it just after he's bandmate said he is 7 years older than he said at the beginning and it was inspiration.

  9. C.... S....

He has NEVER sounded as purely and distinctly BRITISH, before or since, as he does on THIS song, and whole album for that matter.

    C.... S....

Liar you forgot about the laughing gnome.

  10. J.... G....

    First comment: Superb song!
