Bowie, David - Rubber Band Lyrics

Rubber band
There's a rubber band that plays tunes out of tune
In the library garden Sunday afternoon
While a little chappie waves a golden wand

Rubber band
In 1910 I was so handsome and so strong
My moustache was stiffly waxed and one foot long

And I loved a girl while you played teatime tunes

Dear Rubber band, you're playing my tunes out of tune, oh

Rubber band, Won't you play a haunting theme again to me

While I eat my scones and drink my cup
of tea

The sun is warm but it's a lonely afternoon
Oh, play that theme

Rubber band
How I wish that I could join your Rubber band
We could play in lively parks throughout the land
And one Sunday afternoon I'd find my love

Rubber band
In '14-'18 war I went to sea
Thought my Sunday love was waiting home for me

And now she's married to the leader of the band, oh
[spoken]
Oh sob: I hope you break your baton

  14. C.... B....

I am a big admirer of Bowie, but I find this “period piece” to be painfully embarrassing....this is the future Ziggy Stardust? Must really be 1910 in the English Music Hall....

  15. J.... H....

it is interesting how Bowie sounded around that time like a theater and cabaret singer and turned only a few years later into Ziggy Stardust..
But original he worked and came from this area.... Pantomime for an exsample. He was one of the kind and what we lost when he died, will never ever coming back, cause the Stars look very different today..RiP David Bowie🕯🙏

  16. j.... j....

"I hope you break your baton" Lol. Love you for always David.

  17. I.... ....

Wait, but this ISN'T set in 1910. The line "In 1910 I was so handsome and so strong" implies that 1910 is the past when the man was young. It is clear that the man is now much older, and things are clearly happening after the war. That description is incorrect.

  18. N.... R....

  31. g.... ....

It's great. People always pick on his 1967 debut album, but they probably do not understand much music that is not pop or rock.

  50. P.... ....

In the 1960s, Bowie was almost entirely modelled on Syd Barrett meets Anthony Newley.

i have this long play. It must be covered in dust somewhere in the attic. Bowie was definitely never afraid of experimenting and exposing himself.

    F.... C....

    Fernando Cunha cool

  73. R.... ....

someone can explain me who was David, because i don’t know who was he sorry.

pd: i love the beatles.. ❤️

    R.... ....

Wow. He literally influenced almost every single rock band post 1970 in the Western World, and beyond...he managed to be incredibly popular and yet always seemed edgy, unique. He was very personal in his singing and clearly loved it. He went through many different phases, I believe he went to art school and mime school, and at one time before he was famous wanted to be a Buddhist monk.
So many people have copied him, modern music would be completely different without him. He died too early, in 2016, only 69 years young. Look up Blackstar for his last album before he died.
I never give a fig about celebrities, but I mourned his death by buying the weirdest named microbrew beer I could find at the corner store and drinking it up with a friend while listening to the Blackstar album.

    R.... ....

David Bowie's real name was David Robert Jones. He was a cultural force whose mediums were music, film, television, the stage, and art. He was born 8 January 1947 to a lower middle class family in South London. As a child, he was a Little Richard fan. He started his career in music, playing sax in a band right around the time The Beatles got famous in 1963, when he was 16 and had finished high school. He took the stage name "Bowie" in 1966 because another English performer named Davy Jones became famous first in a band created for TV called The Monkees. Bowie took a break for a few months in 1967/68 to study Buddhism. He was a big fan of science fiction novels and films. He *loved* reading.

While making his own music in the late 60s, he studied mime and dance, studied art (briefly), did commercials, small film roles, and cheeky interviews on BBC, he wrote songs for other people, anything related to media and the arts. Even this video is part of a film he and his manager made as a showcase to music, film, stage, or TV producers who might hire him. It helped Bowie out A LOT that he was attractive.

Bowie's first hit song was Space Oddity in 1969, but he didn't get truly famous until 1972. His biggest hit was probably the 1983 song Let's Dance. He also starred in quite a few movies over the years, guested on TV shows, wrote and produced music for other people, had a lead role on Broadway, and was the executive producer on a documentary about _his_ favorite musician, Scott Walker. His hobbies seemed to be reading, drawing and painting (he wasn't bad), seeing art, collecting art, and writing about art in high-end art journals.

Bowie was an *extremely* intelligent and spiritual man. He explored spiritual and humanist themes a lot in his work, and in crafting his image(s). He wasn't a perfect person, but he matured a great deal over time. He was married twice: once to Angela Barnett in 1970, and they had a son, Duncan Jones, in 1971, who is a film director now. He divorced Angie in 1980. In 1992, he married Iman Abdulmajid, and they had a daughter, Lexi Jones, in 2000. He was close friends with John Lennon, and was a supportive friend to Yoko and Sean after John died.

Bowie had a heart attack in 2004 during a performance, and stopped performing live by 2006. He did do some TV and film roles until 2008, but he didn't make music again until 2013. He released his last album, ★, on his birthday in 2016. Hopefully he was aware that it was #1 all over the world before he died. He had opened an off-Broadway musical based on one of his film characters in the weeks before he died, called Lazarus, that was well-received.

David Jones died on 10 January 2016 in New York, two days after his 69th birthday, from liver cancer. He had told very few people that he was terminally ill. He had unfortunately been something of an alcoholic and took a lot of cocaine in the 70s/80s, but quit those in 1989. From the time he was about 14 until he was 54/55, however, he also smoked, sometimes up to 4 packs a day. That sort of abuse of the body catches up to most people, though, and sadly he was one of them.

David Bowie may have been one of the most photographed people in the world, ever. There are hundreds of books about him. After he died, part of his art collection was sold off in 2017 for ~$45 million. His work and life are studied at universities because he broke a lot of cultural and societal taboos during his career (and didn't give a damn), which helped other people free themselves from oppression, and to create their own art.

Art, media, and culture (whether "low", "middle-brow", or "high") wouldn't be what they are today without his deep, almost Jungian, influence.

And that's who he is. 😊
