Bowie, David - Lightning Frightening Lyrics
I'll give you back my farm and I'll give you back my house
I'll give you back my right to be free
I've got moon, I've got sun
Lightning, lightning, lightning
I've got me, I've got you
I'll give you back my farm and I'll give you back my house
I'll give you back my right to be free
I'll give you back my farm and I'll give you back my house
I'll give you back my right to be free
I've got moon, I've got sun
(I've got) Lightning, lightning, lightning
I've got me, I've got you
(It's) Frightening, frightening, frightening

Bowie, David Lightning Frightening Comments
Blown away it's so great
4 people didn’t get their right to be free back
4 people are fucked in the head!
I'll give you back my farms I'll give you back my house, I'll give you back my right to be free... Never a true word spoken to what is happening to Australian farmer's as we speak
This is very cool. I'm a complete Bowie nerd who thought I knew all there was to know but I have not only never heard this song but I've never even heard of it. It sounds like the same band he used on the 'Space Oddity' album. Am I in the ballpark ?
This is a complete and utter rip off of the Crazy Horse song "Dirty, Dirty," written by Danny Whitten. Except, this is fucking awful, like almost all of Bowie's work. Shame and disgusting that he tried to pass this off as his own.
Lol, looks like you're the only person that gives a shit...
SO much more complete, unique in Bowie's already unique catalog. Hard to believe this has only gotten 55k views & 590 likes. You picked the right picture for it too, top upload Bra. Put it on repeat, increase volume, clear menu.
Maybe because he stole the song from Crazy Horse - Dirty Dirty
This showing up in my recommendation is one of those few times Youtube algorithm did a good job.
Love this song.
As far as the dirty dirty controversy goes, there's not a whole lot you can do with just three major chords E, G and A, and a simple melody. Probably a lot of songs out there that sound like this. Its a catchy, slightly poppy song with revolutionary lyrics. Catches even Bowie fans off guard.
Fabulous!
Gorgeous
This, to me, always sounded like a cool jam session between fellow musicians, and they came up with something that sounded sweet, so they went with it. Just a few musicians gathered around, playing good and feeling good.
Glad to hear it in its complete form.
Fun fact: this was a track from Bowie's side project at the time, Arnold Corns (inspired by the title of the Pink Floyd song "Arnold Layne"). The project eventually led into the creation of Bowie's alter-ego Ziggy Stardust as well as the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
I wonder if Beck used to listen to this song a lot?
Beck is a bowie fanatic so probably.
This song reminds me of dropping acid.
Moon, sun, me, you. I wonder if this is inspired some of the lyrics in, "Where Are We Now."
Yep. Too bad he stole the tune from Crazy Horse "Dirty Dirty"
Where is this available now, I've owned before but a fire took it all now I'm rebuilding and would live to have this agaib
This is the kind of thing that should be appearing on the new Bowie box sets, not single versions of tracks. Always loved this.
Wow in wich álbum is this song ?
dirty dirty crazy horse
Where did you get this longer version?! I would love to get it as well!
Look up youtube to mp3
Doesn't really feel like an outtake because I've listened to it that much over the years. There are a few shit songs on SMO, but this isn't one of them. This, Rupert tr, and I'm Just Looking For a Friend are great.
Too bad he stole this one from Crazy Horse. "Dirty, Dirty", written by Danny Whitten.
Love this tune. That little sax solo kicks arse.
Did you know he stole it from Crazy Horse "Dirty Dirty"?
I happen to like this, but of course it's not really a single or an album track, is it? I can see where Bowie didn't think it was strong enough to put on an album at the time.
murielsartre it's from an album "The Man Who Sold The World".
Probably worried about ripping off Dirty Dirty by Crazy Horse.
Sliding guitar? Sax? So what?! He was David Fucking Bowie, so he could've always done whatever the fuck he wanted. If Bowie ever played SPOONS, you best believe he'd make that shit hott as fuck. Bowie & Ronson were MAGIC together. Shut up with all the bitching & comparing & just enjoy the song, for crying out loud.
Normally I detest sax with a white hot passion, but man, this rocks!
Yep. Too bad he stole the tune from Crazy Horse - Dirty Dirty
For all the negative comments here, I really like this.
I love bowie, but ive never herd this song, been binge watching "WEEDS" on netflix and they mentioned the dasd who used to build roller coasters wanting to make one with this song playing in the background on the headrests,
i love that show, love bowie, love rollercoasters, had to look it up
Ya, WEEDS just brought me here. I didnt knew the song ^^
Thanks Andy and Silas (or Randy n Michael) hahah
emily desantos ppl
He should also look up "dirty, dirty" by Crazy Horse. That's the song Bowie ripped off to get this one.
long shot, but what episode?
Someone in this comment section mentioned a similarity to Dirty Dirty by Crazy Horse, so I thought I 'd give that one a listen. The commenter was right; much as I love Bowie, this song is a shameless steal. No wonder he hid it for so long.
While I wouldn't put it past Bowie to have secret time travelling powers, Chris O'Leary in his book 'Rebel Rebel' (which I absolutely recommend) puts the recording date as 23 april 1971, the same day he cut Rupert the Riley. I don't know his sources for this but he's genereally very reliable. I absolutely agree with you that both the Bowie song and the Crazy Horse song it is or isn't based on are terribly dull affairs.
+Baardei It is indeed a great book - his 'Pushing Against The Dame' blog has been a regular 'go to' place for me for several years now. That said, his entry for this song is sketchy to say the least (tis only clear he dislikes it) and I've no idea where he gets his sources for dates either - I'm only going by the date given when it was issued as a bonus track on the 1990 Ryko cd's. To be fair, I'm far from 100% convinced by some of the dates for those bonus tracks either so perhaps he's right. I fully agree, if Bowie did use time travel or merely ripped it off, he should have stolen a better song than this...ha.
There's nothing at all dull about Crazy Horse's "Dirty, Dirty." Not only is"Lightning" frighteningly dull but it very obviously doesn't even remotely sound like Bowie. Slide guitar? C'mon! It sounds like something recorded merely as a studio lark on a slow, off day.
+DrusillaDarko great info. David always mentioned his influences, and he borrowed here, there & everywhere. Always enhanced, adding to,imbuing. Never an imatator.
All these cats saying this track doesn't sound like the rest of bowie's catalogue, ya'll are tripping. He changed up his sound on almost every record. That was part of what was great about Bowie. There's another version of this with an extended harmonica jam. As i understand it, this track was cut around the same time as the man who sold the world album, and i think if you listen to this as a b-side that didn't make it onto that record for whatever reason, it fits right in there with the style of song he was recording at that point.
Rest in peace man true legend
Rest in Peace but he stole this song from Crazy Horse's song "Dirty, Dirty"
I want to make it LOUDER! : ) Awesome song, awesome artist!!!!! Bowie was genius!
Except that it's a rip-off of Crazy Horse's song "Dirty, Dirty". Bowie stole it.
I immediately hit VOLUME!
Best David Bowie song for me
I'm with you Bro. Something about this is totally unique.
Yet he stole it. Crazy Horse, Dirty Dirty
Magnolia Trees in the Meadow why is your comment on everyones comment piss off you’ve had your input about crazy horse.
My favourite. With TMWSTW. Is a bonus track on ryko CD.
Some outtakes should remain outtakes.
Oh feck off!
@***** I bothered to look it up because I love Bowie music, especially his first 10 years. Then I was underwhelmed by what I heard. Simple as that.
Very cool! Thanks for posting this! I've got the mono version, but this is alot better for sure. Where can i find this version?
You should listen to the song that he ripped off to get this one, because it's way better than this. "Dirty, Dirty" by Crazy Horse
I've got me
I've got you,
Lightning, Frightening
Lightning.
listen to the original. "Dirty, Dirty" by Crazy Horse
Bowie is the best!!!!
Excep that he ripped off this song from Crazy Horse's song "Dirty, Dirty". Shame he stole the song and the original writer died before he could do anything about it.
Stuck on repeat
Try Crazy Horse - Dirty Dirty on repeat. That's where he stole the music from.
Use YouTube downloader
you absolute LEGEND!! thebenz@hotmail dot com you have the highest quality version available? total balls-out AMAZNIG!
whats your email? ill send you it
I'm also interested in acquiring this
DUDE! Would you send this to me please oh please - I can't find it anywhere - DON! I produce whack cheeky edits on soundcloud dot comthebenz would LOVE this laxi creeper!
Oh, I bet that's true! I didn't know it was Bowie's song when I first heard it. I was convinced that it must be a cover song of some American band. It doesn't sound like Bowie's handwriting at all.
Another version from 1970 "Lady Sadie" Hotlegs album " Thinks: school stinks"
Danny Whitten (Crazy Horse) wrote this song back in 1969 & it is called Dirty Dirty.. Bowie has copied the music note for note.....
great song
@jakestardust2 There are alternate versions of three songs: Uncle Floyd is quite different, an alternate mix of Toy itself and an alternate version of "Afraid" which was one of the three new songs anyway for "Toy". But the real bonus is it has all the original versions of the old songs in German stereo which is just about the best! Back when, alot of The Beatles songs were in mono or reprocessed stereo, but Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, Baby You're A Rich Man etc. were all in German stereo!!
@55kudu
wow what other bonus tracks are there? i just have the basic "toy" disc! that is quite a find!!!! i have HUNDREDS of bowie tracks, released and unreleased in my itunes i listen to on a daily basis haha...
@jakestardust2 Yes, I have a rare German CD from 2002 that roughly translates into "Toy Story" and has all the tracks plus many bonuses. A real find! I would imagine you have many tracks and more in your collection. What a shame it was never released along with this missing album between "Hunky Dory" and "Ziggy Stardust". I think "Toy" was supposed to fill in that missing album gap because many of the songs he redid are oddities that had no place between 1970 and 1972. These songs have no home!
I would gladly give them one
@55kudu
awesome info! thanks :D
have you heard all the Toy tracks? pretty cool stuff!
"Lightning Frightening" is a song written by David Bowie that remained an unreleased outtake until it appeared on two bootlegs in the 1980s. The first was a vinyl EP with poor sound quality in 1984 called "Shadow Man", and the second with better quality sound was a CD from 1989 called "The Shadow Man". Both versions are named after another rare outtake, "Shadow Man" which is a cool song re-recorded in 2000 for the unissued "Toy". Good work JakeStardust, this IS the complete stereo version.
