How the hell is that considered his best song? It's a throwaway album track at best.

It's a great song. Probably one of the first to get me into Rock music almost 50 years ago now. 2000+ albums & a few zillion individual songs that rattle around my head later I still consider it a classic. The guy was no "one trick pony" dude he was sawing genius off by the yard for a period back in the day.

OK... I like it & it is fairly universally recognised by critics as a great track... You don't like it...that's cool!

Funny enough that this song was actually his revenge on Sinatra's My Way. You can find odd similarities in the first chord progression before it breaks into something unique, there's even a video about it!

Did anybody else notice that Bowie’s eyes look different from each other in this video???

In all the videos. And photographs. And album covers. That's how he looked.

One of his eyes had a permanently diluted pupil due to a fight with his best friend over a girl when he was a teenager. They operated on his eye three times to save his vision. It has the appearance that he had two different coloured eyes but he didn't.

I know such lists are impossible to put together, but if such a list for the greatest songs of all time did exist, this one should definitely be on it. It is so unique musically speaking; it doesn't do as expected or follow a predictable pattern and yet is somehow as catchy as any pop tune ever. Lyrically speaking, it's thought provoking, a little acerbic with its misanthropy, a little playful and nonchalant, and has that punchy staccato quality not unlike moonage daydream that gives each line its own importance.

Why does it feel like it’s on slow-mo?

It's not slowmo, but the pitch is ever slightly lower than the album version

Well everyone is welcome to an opinion but to make a definitive statement is a bit arrogant in my book?

I grew up about 20 miles from the guy and have been listening to his work for probably the best part of 50 years now and my reading is that it doesn't really have any meaning. I don't know if you are aware of the writing style that Bowie used to use the basically he would cut up random sentences and then rearrange them to make some semblance of a narrative and this was one of those songs.

Deep Heat It’s called cut-up. Will Burroughs did it too. It uses chaos as an inspiration but the choice is never random or meaningless. If you think this song is random, you’ve been listening to it the wrong way.

Well a bit like with the bible you can interpret meanings in anyway I suppose. I don't think there is any reference to Bowie giving a definitive take on what the song is about and I've even read conjecture on here if the line is "Lennon, Lenin or lemons" all of which to an ear that has been tuned to a London accent for 57 years seem feasible.

Of course you can read whatever you want in the song, but I assure you Bowie himself had his own idea. The author always knows what it’s about. It’s never random. Subjectivism is for defeatists.

Why are his eyes dilated differently?

He was injured in a fight, and his left pupil got stuck in the open position. The other reacted normally to light, so the difference was very obvious under stage or studio lighting. Some people thought he had one blue eye and one brown one, but it was really just the enlarged pupil that made one look darker.
