the difference is when the stones did this we could infer it's about a woman, but when Bowie "re configures" it all doors are open!!

I was 11 when I first heard this, probably didn't hear the original till 3 or 4 yrs later. This version fucking rips.

It's actually brilliant.

Bowie's cover makes The Rolling Stones' original sound like "aye lets spend the night together, but back for in for about 9, and straight to bed" Whilst Bowie's "lets get oot there and not comeback till sometime in the afternoon"

I love Bowie, but this version doesnt really do it for me... Its rockin', well-played and well-produced, but it seems a little uninspired

I like the Stones cuz it was kinda like in a nerd shy boy POV. Bowie version is way faster and insane and shit. I like the way faster and insane shit better!

Bowie and Mick were friends if Mick thought it sucked ,we would have heard about it.

I like both versions, but I like the Stones' version more because of the instrumentals by Keith Richards and Charlie Watts and Brian Jones.

Who is it on keyboard?

Mike Garson. He played with Bowie on the Ziggy Stardust tour in '72. The dissonance in his arrangement is pretty stunning. Don't know if I've heard anything as creative as this piano piece in any other rock song. This version kicks ass.

Agree....such an inventive part of the song which is very different from the original one.... Ronson and Garson are so good on Aladdin Sane.

This is just funny. Neither Bowie nor Jagger were great technical singers, what made them great was their energy, unique voices and personality. Fantastic technical singers who can sing every note are rarely great musicians anyway. Lou Reed couldn't sing for shit, but I'll take his off-key masterpieces over 90% of perfect artificial pop vocal masturbations any day.

I agree on the bowie side (obviously, but I still like both versions) but mick jagger has the rasp to his voice, but it's always like that, and stones songs are quite slow and up beat which don't quite match together in my book. Just agree with people a little bit more is what I'm saying and be polite in your carefully picked out criticisms

If you're going to do a cover then do something other than just slavishly copy the original.
Bowie put his own slant on it and it does work.
