Bowie, David - Bring Me The Disco King Lyrics

You promised me the ending would be clear
You'd let me know when the time was now
Don't let me know when you're opening the door
Stab me in the dark, let me disappear

Memories that flutter like bats out of hell
Stab you from the city spires
Life wasn't worth the balance
Or the crumpled paper it was written on

Don't let me know we're invisible
Don't let me know we're invisible

Hot cash days that you trailed around
Cold cold nights under chrome and glass
Led me down river of perfumed limbs
Sent me to the streets with the good time girls

Don't let me know we're invisible
Don't let me know we're invisible
We could dance, dance, dance thru' the fire
Dance, dance, dance thru' the fire

Feed me no lies
I don't know about you, I don't know about you
Breathe through the years
I don't know about you, I don't know about you
Bring me the disco king
I don't know about you, I don't know about you
Dead or alive, bring me the disco king
Bring me the disco king, bring me the disco king
Bring me the disco king

Spin-offs with those who slept like corpses
Damp morning rays in the stiff bad clubs
Killing time in the '70s
Smelling of love through the moist winds
Don't let me know when you're opening the door
Close me in the dark, let me disappear
Soon there'll be nothing left of me
Nothing left to release

Dance, dance, dance thru' the fire
Dance, dance, dance thru' the fire
Feed me no lies
I don't know about you, I don't know about you
Breathe through the years
I don't know about you, I don't know about you
Bring me the disco king
I don't know about you, I don't know about you
Dead or alive, bring me the disco king
Bring me the disco king
Bring me the disco king, bring me the disco king
Bring me the disco king, bring me the disco king
Bring me the disco king, bring me the disco king

This song shows the potential of an otherwise mediocre album..in bowie standards

    w.... g....

New killer star was pretty good

    w.... g....

New Killer Star, She'll Drive The Big Car, Days.

  11. w.... g....

One of my faves...I always expect him to sing...bring me the head of the disco king...as the final line

  12. A.... G....

This song alone is worth more than the rest of the album, which I rank among Bowie's weakest. Superb!

  13. L.... M....

I actually despise this track despite being a huge Bowie fan and loving prectically every other song of his

  14. b.... ....

If David Sylvian spent much of his career trying to approximate Bowie's sound, Mr. Jones certainly returned the favor here.

  15. m.... ....

This song is so brilliant, holy s....

  16. M.... Q....

un rio de lagrimas se creo en marte,

    1997

    W.... B....

    "I'm Deranged."

    W.... B....

    ok nice!

  26. s.... e....

Yep am so going to transcribe this! Nice addition to the Rebel Heroes Bowie Tribute
    set list me thinks!!

  27. K.... M....

Do you think he knew something? One of the most soulful song ever for me

    K.... M....

he certainly knew how to sing

  28. B.... M....

This should be on anyone's listening list that wants to be a recording engineer. You can hear the compressor working.

    B.... M....

    would you care to elaborate?

    B.... M....

@splatinum put it on 1.5x speed and you can hear for yourself.

  29. L.... H....

    Masterpiece

  30. A.... M....

I don't know about you, i don't know about you

  31. r.... r....

Bowie and Garson - I'm in love in this connection.

  32. c.... r....

    yeaaaaaaaaaa

  33. J.... T....

    its very good

  34. R.... K....

One of my favorite Bowie songs. Seems odd saying that when the man had so freakin' many.

    R.... K....

No, I understand. This one hits hard.

    R.... K....

Really? For me this is probably my least favorite Bowie Song, I’m only listening again to get it out of my head

  35. S.... P....

the first verse gives me vibes of 'chandelier' by Sia and 'shape of my heart' by Sting. Fantastic interplay of instruments

  36. r.... ....

    Best song on the album.

  37. G.... B....

I think Mr Garson had been listening to Steely Dan around this time. That gorgeous piano is straight from The Royal Scam. Which is, natch, a good thing.

    G.... B....

    Jesus... they sound really similar.

    G.... B....

Yeah, sounds a little like The Caves Of Altamria

  38. W.... F....

    bring me the disco king
    bring me this cocaine

  39. G.... ....

"You promised me that the ending would be clear", he begins, but this isn’t a promise David Bowie would ever make. The lines about opening the door may reference Brel’s “My Death,” an old Bowie obsession, but if there was a death here, it proved temporary. “Bring Me the Disco King” sets the stage for a world in which David Bowie is only a memory or a legend, a world that’s waiting to be born. He’ll be okay, most likely, but he doesn’t know about you.

    l.... ....

thank you ,very strong song and that voice !!!

    l.... ....

Just an unfortegable song..forever. ..thanks Mr David

    l.... ....

    Who is he singing to?
Who broke their promise to him?
"..Memories that flutter like bats out of hell.."

Watch 'The Hunger' or 'Cat People' and you will get a glimpse.
He was one of the few who sold his soul in jest and not for entirely selfish reasons. Alas, through his life he made blood sacrifices to pay his debt. In the end, he withered as they all do.
Unlike the selfish ones, David did have a ray of Grace bestowed upon him in the end.. which may have saved his Soul.

  42. V.... K....

Mighty sound, experimental and not popular, thank God

  43. L.... L....

    9 people were like "ddduuuuuhhhh"

  44. D.... H....

Dance, dance, dance... to the radio?
Is this a reference to his fan Ian Curtis?

    D.... H....

Dan Herdez it’s through the fire

    D.... H....

More like a reference for Twin peaks "Fire walk with me" maybe(?

  45. N.... ....

Great piano and drums! And David: Brilliant as ever!

  46. b.... a....

    dead or alive...

  47. C.... K....

Oh, David ... your voice ... make me melt ... bring me the Disco King

  48. C.... K....

Sending chills down my spine, David.

  49. J.... O....

New version with frusciante guitar is just amazing

    J.... O....

Jota Oliver my favourite version, although I love this and it's echo and just everything about it

  50. M.... S....

    the sexiest voice.
    R.I.P. David

  51. C.... K....

    Love it.

  52. V.... C....

It's haunting that of all songs, this was the last song to end this album. So chilling and telling with these lines:

Close me in the dark, let me disappear
Soon there'll be nothing left of me
    Nothing left to release

Heartbreaking, really :(. I'll never get over his loss.

    V.... C....

You and me both. Thank God his music, like Elton John sang in "Someone saved my life tonight," "safe in time. Thank God my music's still alive."

    V.... C....

    Who is he singing to?
Who broke their promise to him?
"..Memories that flutter like bats out of hell.."

  53. S.... O....

This is the song that chokes me - it has such a melancholy atmosphere " soon there ll be nothing left of me at all"" .....

    S.... O....

Not really..."soon there'll be nothing left of me. Nothing left to release."

  54. m.... ....

What a magnificent track. I would love to hear the other two versions Bowie did of this song in the styles of the albums he was making at the time: _Black Tie White Noise_, and _Earthling_. I've heard that each of those versions were faster than this one (and it's so perfect at this tempo), so my curiosity about what those actually sound like is piqued.

    m.... ....

murielsartre no doubt it'll be released in time as, apparently, there are archives of unreleased songs.

  55. J.... A....

Holy shit this song is so good, I thought it was a 70's Bowie...

    J.... A....

Not quite... it was originally written for "Black Tie White Noise" in 1990.

  56. S.... P....

    Agreed! FANTASTIC track

  57. T.... G....

So intimate and exposed. This song reminds me of loneliness

  58. P.... C....

My favorite version of this song.

  59. A.... a....

it's almost like this is his own 'version' of My Death by Jaques Brel

  60. Y.... ....

Does ANYONE know where I can get the piano sheet music for this piece !?! It is seriously my favourite song at the moment and would LOVE to learn it!
I cannot find it anywhere to download or purchase can anyone help me!

    Y.... ....

+Chloe Cowan There are chords for it on Ultimate Guitar, but I'm nowhere near a piano to test their accuracy! https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/d/david_bowie/bring_me_the_disco_king_lohner_crd.htm

    Y.... ....

+Chloe Cowan Mike Garson is the pianist..he has a facebook page

    Y.... ....

Chloe Cowan learn by ear, it sounds way easier to do on piano then by ear on a guitar

  61. b.... ....

    "dead or alive. . . ."

  62. g.... s....

    great tune

  63. n.... ....

listening to this great piano makes me think how wonderful it would of been for a collaboration with Dudley Moore

  64. D.... F....

how could he smoke and still sound so velvety smooth?

    D.... F....

It's almost as if he was some kind of star man or something

    D.... F....

+Magical Hamster We all are starmen...

    D.... F....

    lots of sex

    D.... F....

    and cocaine

    D.... F....

It is all about how much you smoke and what you smoke.

  65. D.... S....

so so many great songs R.I.P David, your voice lives on inspiring me all the time...

  66. S.... M....

SOMEONE BRING ME THE DISCO KING

  67. T.... S....

Love it Thank you Mr. Bowie ..you promised me the ending would be clear.........................

  68. a.... ....

RIP David Bowie. You were a hero, to all of us. So many of us don't know what it is to live in a world where you don't.

    a.... ....

Bowie is alright in my book.
    Loved his acting portrayals too.
    He kept the world fun.

    a.... ....

    The Thin White Duke

  69. C.... W....

    Rest peacefully, friend.

  70. F.... ....

  71. S.... ....

    Sexy song.

    S.... ....

    soooooooooooo :)

  72. m.... ....

    agreed.

  73. R.... L....

    MASTERPIECE

  74. a.... ....

God that is one terrible album cover.

    a.... ....

Well I mean, it's not the cover for the Kinks' Schoolboys in Disgrace, so it's pretty good in my book. Reminds me of the art of Margaret Keane, actually, so I'd count it as good.

    a.... ....

lol. Of course, the name of the album is "Reality" and you used the word avatar to describe it.  I think you caught on to the artistic aspect of it without actually getting it.  Remember, he was also a painter.

    a.... ....

Agreed. I looks like some 12 year old tried to do some Manga, and then let his girlfriend doodle around a bit.

    a.... ....

    good point Lex

    a.... ....

I love Bowie and all the artwork on his covers, but this really does just look cheap, superficial (both of which I could go with) but worse - like someone was just trying out all the different brushes on some old shoddy art software. Horrible. Non-cohesive(??), unchallenging, unattractive - not even ugly or naive ... just awful!! And I’ve lived with it for long enough to know it’s not going to reveal itself or improve with age.

Thank David this song lies beyond it to forgive all. Maybe that’s why the artwork’s so bad; to demonstrate the true power of this song... ??

  75. f.... ....

    Masterpiece

  76. U.... O....

    How I love this tune....

  77. D.... G....

This is one of the coolest songs ever made.

    D.... G....

    i agree a 101%

  78. M.... B....

    One of the best ever.
