Bonnie Raitt - That Song About The Midway Lyrics

Met you on a midaway at a fair last year
And you stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear
You were playing on the horses
You were playing on the guitar strings
You were playing like the devil wearing wings
Wearing wings, you looked so grand, wearing wings
Do you tie them to your shoulders just to sing
Can you fly? I hear you can! Can you fly?
Just like an eagle doin' his hunting from the sky

I followed through a sideshow to another town
And I found you in a trailer on the camping grounds
You were betting on some lover, shootin' out the dice
And I thought I saw you cheating once or twice
Once or twice, I heard ya did, once or twice
Were you wondering was the gamble worth the price
Now you've packed it in, I heard you did, packed it in
Was it hard to fold a hand you knew you could win?

Lately you've been hiding, it was somewhere in the news
And I'm still at these races with my ticket stubs and my blues
The man calls out the numbers...he sometimes mentions mine
But I feel like I've been working overtime
Overtime, I've lost my fire, overtime
And I envy you the valley that you've found

'Cause I'm midway down the midway
Slowin' down

Bonnie Raitt That Song About The Midway Comments

It's good, she's a great singer but come on, better than Joni? no way.

    F.... J....

@Francis J Pyne She doesn’t HAVE to be better than Joni, just do honor to her work. Which Bonnie does.

    F.... J....

@LeslieGMN I never said she has to be better than anyone to honour their work. I was responding to the people who said - better than Joni. She's not.

  2. R.... V....

    Love her voice! Great singer!

How often do we hear a rendition of a classic song that is this fine? Bonnie Raitt manages to pay homage to Joni Mitchell's original, yet she still makes this version stay with us. Really good work except for those goddamn, gooey violins that keep coming in and threatening to dilute any edge to the lyrics. (Let Streisand keep those dubious contribution to song arrangements.)

  4. A.... C....

The best version. Got it on Vinyl.

  5. A.... C....

    Stunningly awesome.

  6. F.... D....

    Masterful.

  7. C.... B....

    Just a great song period.

I'm 64. I've been listening to this song since I was 17. The final lines, "Well I'm slowing down, I'm getting tired, slowin' down/and I envy you the valley that you've found," takes on new meaning. But this song has never left me.

  9. A.... C....

Never heard this before, very sweet!

can anyone tell me if lowell george played on any of her albums i know he played live with her

  11. A.... ....

I used to absolitely love this artist. Then when she came to my town her ticket prices went through the roof. Then I didn't care so much. Good luck with that. Twice I saved money to see you. Both times you made it impossible for me. Hope that works out for ya.

Why did not more women of that time cover joni's songs....
Everyone wanted to cover bob dylan and james taylor and neil young. Yay to bonnie who brings so much to this song, and for being such a soulful big minded woman.

  13. E.... W....

Frebo's Fender Fretless bass always adds so much depth to her most soulful songs. It has a distinct tone and l can always feel it vibrate throughout the room. Don't know why other bassists don't take to it.

  14. E.... W....

....And you stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear. Clasic Joni Mitchell imagery.(Have to admit that I think Bonnie's deeper more soulful & earthy vocals are more suited to nailing the emotion of this amazing song.

    E.... W....

Joni borrowed that from Shakespeare (as she did on several occasions). Romeo and Juliet, "Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear."

    E.... W....

    I agree...

    E.... W....

    This is better than Joni’s

    E.... W....

I'm the hugest Joni fan! And I csnt agree more that Bonnie's is better. This record was the first I ever fell in love with a female vocalist and wanted to sing. Joni came second but I've looked no further. They dont make them like this anymore!

  15. c.... ....

    outrageous

  16. S.... T....

I'd forgotten how great this song is... sigh.

  17. G.... J....

One of the worst covers ever. Draws none of the emotion of the original. No reason to make this only 5 years after Joni's song.

    G.... J....

You're out of your mind to say that. Bonnie does Joni justice and guess what Joni Agrees! So stuff it sailor!

    G.... J....

Maybe you need more amphetamines cause you is a downer. Screaming Jay does I put a spell on you better than anybody btw with the possible exception of Nina Simone. Mica paris/gilmour puh-sneeze. Hehe

    G.... J....

Gary Johnson. This woman has class, taste and absolute discretion when choosing to cover any other songwriters material. That said Bonnie would never consider covering this jewel if she had the slightest doubt that she couldn't do it justice. And she more than honors the composer and her song.

    G.... J....

Go ahead and cut your ears off Gary, they are useless to you.

  18. t.... ....

I love Joni's version, but Bonnie nails it too! Love her soulful voice!

  19. F.... L....

    my favourite ♡

  20. R.... E....

Hardly anyone can cover a Joni Mitchell song this well.

    R.... E....

Ruth Elwell better version than hers. That’s saying a ton. Staggering vocals. Clean as clean can be. No auto tunes

    R.... E....

@Bob PerkinsDDS Ruth Elwell? Are you making that up? Share a link to the song, please.

  21. S.... F....

the most exquisite singer and song still flips me out classic.

    S.... F....

Wow...very well spoken. My thoughts exactly.

I have every album she has ever recorded.  She has saved my life.

    T.... M....

my heart belongs to this women I have seen her so many times,.I have every recording. She inspires me everyday.

    T.... M....

She didn't write a single song on this album. I just wanted to point that out, not trying to be rude. I love her too!

    T.... M....

This is a Joni Mitchell cover and I’m sure she made her proud . She sounds fantastic and I believe their friends. I’ve seen photos of them together. Love it !!

    T.... M....

This was written by Joni Mitchell who I also adore. When Bonnie covers a song she makes it her own. Bonnie is extraordinary.

    T.... M....

So sad to see only 5506 hits.  What's wrong with you people.
    This is awesome music.
Play it LOUD through your best pair of headphones.

    A.... C....

Allan Copland For decades Bonnie was an world
class performer who never had a huge fan base. just a small fanatical group of devotees. It wasn't until she began to record more "popular" releases such as "Something to Talk About" that she started to get the recognition she always deserved. Her loyal fans from the. past felt she had sold out. Hell. More power to her. And there's nothing wrong with finally getting your props after paying your dues for so many years. While at the same time being true to yourself and your roots. Bonnie is in a class all her own. Thanks Bonnie for sharing your unique gifts and talents

    A.... C....

Nick of Time was HER album!

    A.... C....

It's because most of us know it is one of Joni's songs.

  27. S.... ....

I don't know if it was Bonnie's first major hit, but I do know it's a huge hit with me!
Bonnie taught me (unknowingly) how to sing, I will always love her music and her for that
Thank you so much for posting this, I wish I had the music track for this, and well, this whole LP and others...thanks again friend! Blessings..

  28. a.... ....

So many great Bonnie Raitt recordings, but this version of a Joni Mitchell song is my favorite.

  29. T.... ....

    Bonnie's first major hit, right?

  30. W.... P....

I enjoy this song and especially this rendition SO much. Very well performed, care went into it.
