Bobby Vinton - The Days Of Sand And Shovels Lyrics

When I noticed her the first time
I was outside running barefoot in the rain
She lived in the house next door
Her nose was pressed against the window pane
When I looked at her she smiled
And showed a place where two teeth used to be
And I heard her ask her mom if she
Could come outside and play with me
Soon the day's of sand and shovels
Gave way to the mysteries of life
Then I noticed she was changing and I
Looked at her through different eyes
We became as one and knew a love
Without beginning or an end
And everyday I lived with her
Was like a new day dawning once again

And I've loved her since every doll was Shirley Temple
Soda pop was still a nickel
Jam was on her fingertips
Milk was circled on her lips
After many years our live grew
Silent and at night I heard her cry
And when she left me in the fall I knew
That it would be our last goodbye
I was man enough to give her
Everything she needed for a while
And searching for a perfect love
I found that I could not give her a child
Now she lives a quiet life
And is the mother of a little girl
Every time I pass her house
My thoughts go back into another world
Because I see her little girl
Her nose is pressed against the window pane
She thinks I'm a lonely man
Who wants to come inside out of the rain
And I've loved her since every doll was shirley Temple
Soda pop was still a nickel
Jam was on her fingertips
Milk was circled on her lips

Listen to it by Waylon Jennings!

Vinton's very best song. One of my all-time favorites, though immensely sad. Thanks for the memories of 1969 - how I wish I could go back. As sad as Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey".

    Saddest song ever

My God, this is what love is about!

Glad so many others feel as emotionally moved by this touching song even after 50 years! He did so many great songs but this one really touches my heart.

Hi Tom...you are so right on this old upload...This truly is so Bobby Goldsborish...I've noticed when songs don't have an ending like this one, they seem to struggle with the buying public or may be just coincidence. Actually the ending reminds me of the ending to Neil Sedaka's "The World Through A Tear". There was ((A LOT)) of good music out there during the summer of '69 that competition on the charts was really rough. This is such a great tune.

Andrew McCarthy. If you Google the winstons music. It gives you 24 songs. Scroll down to this one. And you can listen to it on YouTube.

I agree with you, Marko! I love it, and as I just wrote here: Life has not so many happy endings that Hollywoold tells us. Life can be tough and hard, with many dissapointings. Happy beginnings, and very often sad endings. This has a beautiful song and true lyric! Best wishes from Norway.

    @Anne Larsen
This song came out in June of 1969.
I was also thirteen at the time; I'm now fifty-nine.
I think that one of us should check their arithmetic.

I was 14 when this song came out, and it left an impression on me wat back...that you never but never leave your love, for something like this. Your love for each other should outway other wants you may have.

  16. M.... L....

    I love this song....

Your taste in music exactly mirrors my own:  eclectic, diverse, broad, covering the glory years of American popular music (from the 1950s through the 1970s).  And, yes, I too absolutely love this song--from the very first time I heard it in 1969.

  17. S.... P....

My brother wrote this song. It was going to have a happy ending but he decided not to do that. I love it!

This is one of the best lyrics that has been written i history!!! This is what life is!!! Life has not so many happy endings, that Hollywood tells us. I love this song, and has always done it. Beautiful melody and superb lyrics. Thank you very much! Best wishes and love from Norway!

This is one of the saddest songs, ever, though one of my all-time favorites. Very similar to this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuDrvibicWE. Heartbreaking. I sure wish he made it a happy ending. Life has enough sad endings, as it is.
