Bobby Darin - Simple Song Of Freedom Lyrics

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Hey, there, mister black man, can you hear me?
I don't want your diamonds or your game
I just want to be someone known to you as me
And I will bet my life you want the same

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Seven hundred million are ya list'nin'?
Most of what you read is made of lies
But, speakin' one to one ain't it everybody's sun
To wake to in the mornin' when we rise?

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Brother Solzhenitsyn, are you busy?
If not, won't you drop this friend a line
Tell me if the man who is plowin' up your land
Has got the war machine upon his mind?

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Now, no doubt some folks enjoy doin' battle
Like presidents, prime ministers and kings
So, let's all build them shelves
Where they can fight among themselves
Leave the people be who love to sing

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

I say... let it fill the air
Tellin' people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Rock'n'roll icon, cabaret singer, Las Vegas legend, folk singer and actor. Was there anything he couldn't do? And he did it all in less than 20 years. A TREMENDOUS loss.

    So timely

I LOVE MY COUNTRY U. S.A. MY FATHER FOUGHT IN KOREA-HE HATED WAR- AND LOVED BOBBY DARIN- I THINK I KNOW WHY

  6. o.... ....

    Young & healthy here.

  7. C.... ....

This man could sing everything: blues, jazz, folk, pop...and sing it all excellently.

  8. C.... C....

Beautiful, poignant - Should rank right up there with our National Anthem. Truly the National sentiment of The Mainstream, However, not those who run our war machine.

  9. m.... ....

A legend speaking his truth, the truth. 👏👏👏

(Canadian here) On Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in USA), my wife & I were listening to a special satellite radio music program from San Diego. 4 hours of ‘60s music honoring the Veterans, but I didn’t hear this song. As Mr Dave Harper commented here a few years ago, it’s as relevant today as it was initially recorded. Hmmm. I wonder what would happen if someone updated the names to be more current and re-recorded it?

  11. A.... K....

If U haven't seen the movie, U SHOULD!!

  12. m.... b....

should be the national anthem of the world

  13. J.... J....

Beautiful song Bobby that I will never forget.

  14. p.... ....

Thank you for letting me find this song from a youth 🤓✌
    Agree💮

Can't help but think how much BD has in common with Dion, namely that both were teen idols who went through these powerful transformations. Dion's was maybe 5-10 years earlier, after 'The Day the Music Died,' as he was part of the Winter Dance Party tour. He was offered a seat on the plane, but the $36 fare was as much as his parents paid for rent, and he felt he couldn't justify the expense. I'm really moved by 'Simple Song of Freedom' and the conviction I see in BD's face as he performs here.

  16. D.... ....

Now Americans protest to protect the establishment. WTF happened?

    D.... ....

DTOM, ¿eStamos? Collective Brainwashing, that’s what it is, what’s really sad is that America is divided. We need another Kennedy! We need more Bobbies, Kennedy as well as Darin.

  17. W.... N....

    Still brings me to tears.

  18. M.... R....

700 million lol ..... 9 billion are you listening?

  19. b.... ....

I heard this song for the first time several years ago on a PBS documentary. what a great song with great lyrics. Too bad it isn't played more something like Satellite radio. Over covered by current bands.

  20. S.... S....

We're all living in a sophisticated slavery system while they manipulate us into dying for their cause while making us think it's ours.

  21. o.... ....

Bobby sang a lot of different styles of music, which means there's something for everyone. I remember some of his early songs which I didn't know @ the time were his! others I've never heard til recently on UTUBE. Some that he sang are songs I didn't like by those I heard originally sing them. But I DO like his recording of them. So, like I say, something for everyone. And I'm a bigger Bobby Darin fan than ever. IF HE ONLY KNEW! LOVE YOU BOBBY DARIN! SEE YOU IN HEAVEN!

  22. m.... ....

Just great. Bobby Darin did it all, and to think, with all his talents, he was open to new ideas! Thanks!.

  23. c.... ....

Here is the Norwegian version: but I like very much the original, and the message is still very actual ! : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMe2xFq_GPs (1970 Single)

  24. S.... H....

He did a true real and rational regarding about what and how ever one should all do!! With him being stated, as a retired teacher, I grade him with an A++!!

  25. B.... A....

    Quelle belle chanson...

  26. R.... ....

A lesser known message song. Beautiful. His written song.

  27. g.... ....

    Great song!

  28. D.... W....

I would love to know the name of the woman background vocalist on this performance. She adds so much substance to the song, but is never ever seen. .

    D.... W....

    David,
About the only thing I know about this performance is that is was done on the Flip Wilson show. You could start there I guess.

    D.... W....

Oh, that is good to know. I might see what I can find. Thanks!

  29. M.... R....

I have to admit; I want a war.

  30. L.... B....

    Unforgettable

  31. F.... T....

I love this song. It is so current.

  32. M.... J....

Love this song so much. Thanks from Sweden!!

  33. m.... ....

Bobby Darin “WOKE” tell em Bobby!

  34. P.... M....

I didn t know this singer so far. He was really fantastic. I love him since ever.

  35. P.... S....

I'm a Beatles fan (as well as a huge BD fan), but I prefer this song over "Imagine" (which, let's face it, is overplayed.) "Simple Song of Freedom" is so underrated.

  36. B.... S....

What a great song.I never knew about it until I saw the movie Beyond The Sea.

  37. R.... L....

I can imagine Mike Nesmith sing this song.

  38. B.... S....

Being alliterative -very stylish, song simply delivered with power and serenity.

  39. N.... L....

If only it was that simple.

  40. W.... i....

The good always die young.  Bobby Darin, Bobby Kennedy, John Lennon --&thousands of young men killed in wars created by bitter old men who want to kill youth

  41. a.... g....

Sad we don’t have talent like that anymore

  42. G.... C....

I realize that I was lucky to be alive when Bobby Darrin was performing. I never saw him live, but his TV appearances showed more than a singer. He was just a great performer. A true legend. We miss you Bobby

  43. M.... L....

    ...Thank You for Posting this....

    M.... L....

You are more than welcome. I had no idea at the time that this would really 'touch a nerve' so to speak. 300k+ views is mind boggling to me.
Gone, but truly not forgotten I guess.

  44. j.... a....

    He was amazing.

  45. B.... ....

This is such an amazing and powerful song. Bobby doesn't call out one group or another group. He calls out the government and world leaders. Which is what the people of especially today's United States need to hear. It's not that we want to be separated from each other, but the government sure wants us to be.

  46. D.... M....

The North Korea threats all over the news has brought me back to hear this powerful song. My ex was drafted in the Army in 1970 and then went to Vietnam for 2 years. Love Bobby Darin....R.I.P.

  47. R.... E....

This song is more appropriate now then ever before!

Bobby was an understimated performer.ALONG WITH eLVIS AND tOM jONES the best three of that era.

  50. a.... ....

And look at the feedback...24 assholes gave this song a thumbs down, must be trump supporters.

  51. K.... B....

there may well be some who like fighting and killing, but that charge in America lands flat!! We are peace-loving, live-and-let-live!! Americans are good and kind 99 to 1 !!!

  52. E.... C....

Sounds much like what we wanted during Vietnam conflict.

  53. M.... G....

    I miss Tim...

  54. c.... ....

What a great gift Bobby had, no screaming out a song, it just flowed with such feeling, I just love it. It was never played enough. I grew up with Bobby's songs, he was a genius.

  55. L.... M....

I never knew him but when saw the movie it made cry with joy and I live his song we live him in peace 😊

  56. a.... ....

    He was so great.

  57. J.... J....

Around the end of the 1970's decade, Business moguls bought out the music industry and it stopped being fun, stopped being run by actual musicians. The business moguls made it all about money, which is why today's music is so lacking compared to Pre-1980. In my opinion, We have not yet heard, read or seen the BEST music, literature and art because the most talented and creative people have not been presented to the general public yet, have not been given the opportunity to be heard.

    J.... J....

    Love it!!!

    J.... J....

It's always been run the same way. It's just that the so called artists are willing to do everything but sing to get ahead. Simply because they can't sing. If you want success in this business now you just need to keep your followers up, your tattoos stupid and your mind in the gutter. We keep it running by watching tv and voting etc. If we all stopped buying and watching and went back to this and every other time period, we could shut this filth factory down but like every other horrible thing in this world we don't have the guts to do that. I don't watch tv not even the news. I call people and find out what's going on. Once a week I look at the headlines. If everyone did this and stopped twitting, faceplanting, and instant ramming, we could change the world and really support the true meaning of this song. People your friends are right next to you or down the street dying to make your acquaintance. Do something ...anything real.

  58. J.... J....

He was a master and is greatly missed. I still love him as much as ever and wish he was still with us. Love all his music, but this song is timely and timeless!

  59. t.... g....

Just a great song that has endured time....so true today. Sad ending to a marvelous talent.

  60. h.... ....

Joe Markiewicz, why say "pacifist"? Why not just say "truly Christ-following"? Something that most people who call themselves Christians now have totally forgotten.

    h.... ....

    HateGreed1 :
Wow, I am replying to this, but I don't want to start a firestorm.
'Christianity', as with most religions, is a choice to find ones way to personal salvation, yes?
As with most monotheistic religions, 'peace' is included, either directly or indirectly.
Judaism, i.e. the Old Testament, gave us the Ten Commandments; 'Thou Shalt Not Kill', etc.
The New Testament gave us the 'Golden Rule', and 'The greatest of these, is love'.
    Yet pacifism, transcends just Christianity.
Atheists and Agnostics are not war mongers, nor are Buddhists, or Hindus, or Sheiks, or yes, even Muslims (per se).
There are people who believe that we, as people, are 'past god', in that the concept of god was a social necessity in order to keep us from killing everybody, but as we have evolved as people, the concept is no longer needed.
Pacifists come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and religions, or even lack thereof.
It comes down to respect for our fellow human beings, and the abhorrence to war.
And before anybody starts calling me an old hippie, for the record, I served in the USAF during Vietnam (Sgt., 1971-1977).

    Respectfully, Joe

    Bobby Darin: The very best.
    Fabulous Bobby Darin.

  63. h.... ....

WRC looks so serene here. Really at peace. What a BEAUTIFUL SOUL. What a GIVER.

  64. J.... M....

Most noteworthy, Neil Young has acknowledged that his genre-shifting, if not exactly inspired by Darin, was at least validated by the example of Darin's kindred career. "I used to be pissed off at Bobby Darin because he changed styles so much, "Young told Rolling Stone in 1988. "Now I look at him & I think he was a fucking genius". I believe many would agree!!

  65. J.... M....

What a Spunk he was. Have everything Bobby Darin, Love him to bits!

Chris Fox Pay attention to the NWO that's behind all the news outlets giving the people what they want them to believe to further the NWO Agenda.
All the freedoms you listed are still alive and well. What the right does care for is keeping this country safe. There is no country without borders. And how many ISIS camps are there here already??? Go look it up. There are videos of them in many different states thanks to your Lord Obama.

    D.... H....

Hollis : "... do beautiful things to help people and society." Is what happened in Charlottesville a good example?

    D.... H....

Nicholas Hollis: Is Charlottesville a good example of the 'alt-right' doing "... beautiful things to help people and society?"

    D.... H....

Dave Harper oh shut the fuck up and enjoy the music

    D.... H....

    I really like Trump.

  68. B.... M....

Bobby had his first open heart surgery in Feb 1971, this is Jan 1972. He had to take oxygen offstage between songs. He got his own NBC variety show in the summer of 1972. It lasted until May 1973. Bobby had his 2nd open heart surgery in Dec 1973. He died in the recovery room afterward. Bobby was a brave, wise soul. Gone too soon.

    B.... M....

Nobody needs an imitator of BD. We have plenty of video and audio of the Real Deal.

    B.... M....

The Karaoke King's ripoff of Bobby Darin. Spacey is a perv.

    B.... M....

hategreed1 Spacey is a big fan of Darin. Your comment has no validity.
The fact that Spacey is gay speaks to your closed mind to liberty and justice for all.

    B.... M....

Beth McAvoy ...so-o much talent down the drain when he died. Think what he could have continued to do & accomplish.

    B.... M....

ohwhatelse With the physical problems he was struggling with, we were blessed to have him at all.

  69. D.... H....

This song is as relevant today as when Bobby Darin wrote and sang it. Everyone should listen the the words and tell our government that this is what should be. Bobby wrote this song in 1971. Please listen.

    D.... H....

We need everyone to not only listen, but as Dave Harper said, we ALL need to TELL Our Government This is how we think and feel. As long as we are silent, it will never get any better.

    D.... H....

Dave Harper Those who don't learn from history....

    D.... H....

    Agree 100%!

    D.... H....

He wrote in 69 after he went into seclusion following RFKs assassination. He worked for RFK and was at the hotel when it happened.

    D.... H....

Wait. He didn't write it. It's a Tim Harden song he's covering

  70. S.... H....

    where was this recorded?

  71. P.... G....

Such a talent we lost to soon, wish more people could hear this song

  72. R.... B....

Could listen to this every day

    R.... B....

    +Richard B Rosseau I do.

  73. R.... T....

There are times when free people are attacked as in World War II and the current battle against ISIS. I don't know if Darin was against all wars as some Quakers and others were or just against Vietnam as it was the war dujour. He did not as I recall march in the streets or get himself arrested. I don't recall him marching for civil rights either. What he did was noble but he only went so far. I can't really knock him for that. Few want to go to jail

    R.... T....

+Rand Tenor He actually did march at Selma and he was an avid supporter of MLK

    R.... T....

I think it was more just the Vietnam War. As my grandfather told me, "it was a war no one wanted, but I had to fight it. And I deserve every rank I earned. Just remember that I love this song." The way my grandpa said it sounds, minus the part about his military experience, exactly what Bobby said.

    R.... T....

Read any of Bobby Darin's biographies. He was at the March on Washington. He wanted to go to Watts to speak to & calm the rioters, until an African American musician friend talk him out of it, because of the danger of the situation. He campaigned for Bobby Kennedy. Bobby gave tons on money to charity. He took out newspaper ads supporting John Lennon during his fight with the U.S. Government. The list goes on......

    R.... T....

He did do a lot for someone as sick as he was. Although he did a lot more than just write and sing about it, as many as he reached during his career, I'm sure singing about issues did a lot of good.

    R.... T....

that watts story sounds exactly like I heard before but with Johnny Otis.

Jimmie Knefely If you have every one, then you have Live At The Desert Inn. Go check the liner notes and find the writing credits. *spoiler alert* It's Bobby Darin. Or a simple google search would suffice.

    G.... G....

Tim Murphy the first time I watched him perform this was live at the coppa on DVD and he himself said that Hardin wrote the song

    G.... G....

Jimmie Knefely Or like I said, you can just google it instead of going off of your memory, which is clearly mistaken. Bobby Darin wrote this song. Look it up. That's that.

    G.... G....

Is not TOM is TIM HARDING do a better research on his name at least so you dont look like a noob , he was also singing it in 1969 but did not compose it , Bobby Wrote it originally and you have no clue about it, people nowadays always with the "GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT"

    G.... G....

your google search didnt do much huh? i have documents about this and is not on google for you to look, so better knock it off.

  76. M.... H....

So relevant in our world today.  Everyone needs to have this song in there head all the time.  When will humanity ever get it.  Bobby's rendition is so simple..

    M.... H....

    Really the right words.

  77. L.... P....

I listened to Bobby Darins song tonight & I loved it... He stood there with His beautiful tux on Singing that Great song ; If He was Still here with Us He would have made a Difference in This ole World ~

    +lori sapiel So true Lori

    L.... P....

+lori sapiel He DID make a difference in this world.  :>)

    L.... P....

He's still here, more than most of us, Lori. We just need to make sure his voice, his music, his message is heard, especially in the 20WORST Century of War/Terrorism-Manufacturing/Profiteering and the Enslavement of the entire human race, by 1% of the population.

    L.... P....

Lori Philbrick ...he did, in His own time.

Uma linda interpretação da música de Tim Hardin!!!

    G.... M....

+Gessimar Machdo de Oliveira No no, Bobby fez esta canção! Perdão
     meu Português .

  80. G.... H....

Its not obvious, but what Bobby Darin did starting in about 1966, was ballsy. Total transformation in his style. He probably pissed off his older mainstream fans with this kind of material. But he really clearly did not care and I admire the hell out of that.

    G.... H....

He actually did way before 1966...in 1959 he recorded "Mack the Knife" after becoming a favorite of the teeny bopper crowd, much to the chagrin of Dick Clark who thought he was crazy. But it sure paid off...he was completely at ease writing, singing, and recording every genre of music. He even raps on "Me and Mr. Hohner"!

    G.... H....

I agree--balsy and he wrote Simple son of freedom!! Craig Inglis

    G.... H....

Love all his work & have purchased everything available since the internet began here in Australia. Bobby's work was his life story

    G.... H....

Bobby spoke to his fans in song

    G.... H....

He was just an opportunist, looking to exploit the "flavor of the day"! he never had any credibility, trying to be a "hippy"...

  81. B.... ....

Loved singing this in his honor on the occasion of his 70th birthday in NYC...Roger Kellaway was there among others....

    B.... ....

@Blinstrubsgal Do you know who the magnificent backup singer in this video was?

    B.... ....

@Brian Brownell  I've forgotten, but what a great question for our Darin FB chat sites......or I could ask Jimmy, guess I'll ask him first then pose the question to the others.....

  82. J.... K....

This is a song that will put a lump into your own throat as it would tears into your own eyes just listening to this song

  83. m.... ....

    Wasn't  he something?

  84. B.... D....

An amazing story: This was quite a break for a man in a tenure track trajectory for full professor in the school of Frank Sinatra. The break was both musically and politically. Yet not as great a break as some my think.  He unfortunately had a bad heart. We remember him for his contribution in all his phases from urban pop, to doing original and superb interpretations of American standards with a big band, to his final political statement recorded here.

Wasn't this song written by Bobby and Tim Hardin had a hit song with it then Tim Hardin wrote some song which I can't remember and Bobby Darin had a hit with the song? They swapped hit songs.

    w.... ....

@wavygr If I were a Carpenter, great song. Love Bobby forever

    w.... ....

Other way around though. Carpenter was first, Bobby wrote this later, Tim had a hit with it. Both Tim's and Bobby's are excellent.

  90. A.... F....

Bobby Darin was a pop singer and did very few folk songs. He was always part of "the establishment".

    A.... F....

@Anthony Foutch What and who all make up "the establishment"?

    A.... F....

@mww2821 Back then there was the counter culture or freaks/hippies and the establishment or the squares man. For example Neil Young CS&N and The Beatles were the counter culture and Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra were the establishment.

    A.... F....

Anthony Foutch Hold on a second, you're calling Sinatra and Darin "the establishment" ? for one, Bobby's music was always evolving with the times, and second, Sinatra's swingin music was dying in popularity since the mid-50s. You can't call them establishment when there is so such thing as that in music.

Is there a way to edit out the annoying soprano?

  92. S.... L....

I simply adore this man. Always have, always will. Thank you so much for sharing.

What an awesome song-sung by an awesome performer!  RIP!

    t.... ....

And written by this awesome songwriter/performer/singer/actor.

    t.... ....

thepinkbutterfly10 ...i don't believe he's "resting" at all. He believed in Jesus so he's in Heaven singing for God now. Think how great to hear him there, & to join in!

  94. T.... ....

Wow. I thought Bobby Darin would be really out of place if he wasn't in a nightclub, doing Mack the Knife and stuff like that, but he was pretty good at transitioning to something completely different.

    T.... ....

You need to start exploring BD on Youtube. You will be AMAZED at the breadth and depth of the songs he composed, recorded, and performed.

we the people here (in the USA) don't want these wars

    n.... ....

I honestly believe that the American people do not want all these wars .The United States is admirable for its technological achievements, in music (jazz, soul) not by their belligerent aspect.

    n.... ....

@nathenism "(in the USA)"? Really? Because other countries are just full of people that do?

    n.... ....

@mww2821 the majority of the people in the world don't want them. just letting people know not all americans are war mongers. don't put words in my mouth.

    n.... ....

@nathenism I didn't put any words in your mouth. You're the one that put a qualifier on your sentence.

    n.... ....

And all the millions that the U.S. military have been murdering, so that 1% of the population can be billionaires from all the profiteering, want them even less.

  96. D.... H....

This song is appropriate today as it was when he first wrote/sang it.  Love what it has to say...very honest and straightforward.  More people in government and leadership should listen carefully to the words.....

    D.... H....

Absolutely. There is more happening ‘out there’ than the news tells us. We have to bELIEVE that things ARE improving. The Universe will not let us suffer this time around. Mother Earth WILL survive also.

    D.... H....

@Gary Watson Yes.. The Oneness IS happening. When more of us come together & accept one another, as The Ascended Masters,do, we will really move into Higher Dimensions. And that means no judgements, no attachments, no confrontations. All that is related to inner fears. We are only here on this, our Mother Earth Plane, for a short time, in each life-time, and the better we can be as humans, the more quickly we will evolve. The Universe is totally with us. So keep up the great work, friend, pass on the Love & Light to all whom you meet in your daily comings & goings. If we can have an open Heart daily, this will be as Magic and it will encourage others. If those  around me complain, I usually say, Be Grateful for the moment (this is all that we have). And those in the western world have plenty- althou', too much is often not the best. Bobby D. was, as I see it, A Light Worker. We all plan our time b/f being born & know how long we’ll be here, as well as our assignments. I knew at 7 years of age, my direction. I was in the play yard of my junior school, and said to myself, I wanted to teach. I really loved children so much. That had to have been from past life influences, I’d say.. LOL. Keep up the GREAT work. We WILL, we ARE improving. Don’t watch too much news :).Namaste.

    D.... H....

I think a lot of the regular people he was singing to need to hear the message too. Seems a lot of people hate messages of peace more than they hate conflict.

    D.... H....

Well said I was going to say the same.

    D.... H....

Well said Gary and I think you are right.

  97. P.... G....

Bobby Darin composed this song, not Tim Hardin.  Tim Hardin composed "If I Were A Carpenter."

  98. 1.... E....

Our continued Bilderberger/CFR globalist Foreign Policy is delivering what Ron Paul warned America of for decades and in the Republican presidential debates.
THE BLOW BACK; all the other candidates and the Lame stream Media laughed at him, and ignored him as much as possible. Now look at the mess our foreign policy has created;  the NeoCONs and OBama with  “his”  CFR administration are pushing for more. OB and the CFR State Department got us into Libya,Egypt,Syria and Ukraine, as well as Afghanistan, Pakistan and back to Iraq for more . Will America wake up to this NWO agenda and set up?
