Bobby Darin - Sail Away Lyrics

In America, you get food to eat
Won't have to run through the jungle and scuff up your feet
Just sing about Jesus oh yes
Drinkin' wine all day (Jesus)
It's great to be in America

Ain't no lion, no tiger, ain't no mamba snake
Just a sweet watermelon and a buckwheat cake
Everybody is as happy as a man can be (ohhh)
Climb aboard little woman, sail away with me

Sail away (sail away)
Sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away (sail away)
Sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

In America every man is free
Take care of his happy home and raise a family
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
Y'all gonna be in America

Sail away (sail away)
Sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away (sail away)
Sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

Sail away (sail away)
Sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away (sail away)
Come an' sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

Sail away (sail away)
Sail away (sail away)
We will cross the mighty ocean...

Bobby Darin Sail Away Comments
  1. U.... G....

Somehow I don't think he got the point.

    U.... G....

He was politically active in the 1968 presidential campaign and was with Kennedy the day he travelled to Los Angeles on June 4, 1968, for the California primary. He was at the Ambassador Hotel later that night when Kennedy was assassinated.
    He got the point.

    Great great song. Randy Newman

  4. N.... R....

I don't think Bobby Darin quite got this song. In fact Randy Newman himself said so: "Bobby Darin could sing, but he did "Sail Away", and, well... I don't think he understood it. He did it like was a happy song about coming to America."

    N.... R....

Or maybe the joke is on Newman. Maybe Darrin understood it, but loved America so he made it a happier thing.

Can't agree ____ dont believe Randy said that _____ Bobby Darin was too intelligent not to understand this song ___ that's my opinion

    N.... R....

Love Randy But. He's wrong about this Darin reading ____ Darin too smart to misunderstand this piece

  5. C.... T....

Why change the line from 'climb aboard little wog'? I mean what's the point?

    C.... T....

I think he may have misheard the lyric—notice the earlier "mama snake."

This is the best version I have heard ever. Bobby knew how to find the heartfelt depths of the song and deliver and some. Just listen to the soul in his awesome voice, man oh, man what a talent, a multi-talented entertainer. There is such a wealth of legacy left for us and ALL future generations to enjoy. Bobby Darin is the one and only master with the masters touch. Thank you Bobby for everything you gave us, the world is a better place for having you in it, even for the short time. RIP!!

One of the best covers of a Randy Newman song I ever heard. Darin just had that ability to interpret songs wonderfully. I have never been disappointed with a Darin performance or recording. He was great right up to the end.

Interesting and haunting - a far car from his late 50's stuff that the world knows. I love it but it took a few plays. The key is you have to forget all his earlier records that you loved! Thanks for uploading.
